Of Good Courage/ 2 Corinthians Week 10/12: March 20-24, 2017

1/ Connect - In what ways were you able to put repentance into practice last week? ______________________________________________________________

2/ Explore - Read the Scripture. (2 Cor 8.1-15) Courage To Give Generously - What makes not only being generous but also wanting to be generous so difficult?

As you consider the example of God’s grace in the Macedonians, what lessons stand out to you? Is generosity about how much money you have? See verse 5: What did the Macedonians give? What does Jesus want from us - aspects of our lives or our very selves? 3/ Courage to be generous from the darkness of a lack of grace. See verses 13-15: What is Paul trying to motivate in the Corinthians? Why do you think Paul quotes from Exodus 16? See Ex 16.17-20.

1/ Generosity is about the heart.

What seems to be the connection between their manna and our money?

See verses 8, 11-12, and 2 Cor. 9.7: What does each of these communicate about the importance of the heart when it comes living generously?

What happens to our experience of God’s grace in our possessions when we refuse to be generous?

2/ Courage to be generous from an example of grace. See verses 1-5: verse 1: what has been given to the churches in Macedonia? verses 2-4: what are the surprising elements of that grace?

See Matthew 6.19-21 4/ Courage to be generous from the knowledge of ultimate grace. See verse 9: What do the Corinthians need to remember that they already know? Unpack the following elements of God’s grace for you: 1) How was Jesus rich? 2) How is that He became poor?

3) For what reason? (for who’s sake?) 4) How is that He has made you rich? See Romans 8.32

5/ Courage to be generous by applying God’s grace. See verses 6-7: What are some things the Corinthians excel in?

4/ Prayer 1. Pray that we would be more and more amazed by Jesus’ grace for us in the Gospel. 2. Pray that He would give us generous hearts as a result of His grace in our lives. 3. Pray for courage to put that generosity into practice.

Where do they need more consistency? What does this mean for how we view Jesus’ Lordship in our lives? Should we give Him aspects of our lives? How does Jesus’ grace for us purchase us completely? If I was saved by my good works then there would be a limit to what God could ask of me or put me through. I would be like a taxpayer with “rights”—I would have done my duty and now I would deserve a certain quality of life. But if I am a sinner saved by sheer grace—then there’s nothing he cannot ask of me.” Tim Keller, The Reason for God ———————————————————————————————

3/ Practice 1.

How can you foster a more generous heart of grace?

2.
