WHERE AM I?

“Where Am I?” is an activity that uses listening and gross motor skills to introduce today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed WHAT YOU DO: During the activity: Have the children spread out in an open area of the room. Tell them that you will act out an activity. If the activity you do has anything to do with water, they should say, “Water.” If the activity you imitate is in the sky, they should say, “Sky.” The activities for water could be taking a bath, snorkeling, and washing a car. The activities for sky could be flying a kite, flying like a bird, and riding in a hot air balloon. The kids can act out the motions with you as well. WHAT YOU SAY: After the activity: “Wow, you are so smart! That was fun! Last week we learned that God made the light and the dark on the first day of Creation. I can’t wait to hear what He made on the second day! Are you ready to hear our true story from the Bible?”

WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Copy the “Sky or Water” Activity Page onto white cardstock and cut out the images. Draw a line down the center of the butcher paper horizontally and tape it to the wall, making sure it is at the children’s eye level. During the activity: Point out the butcher paper on the wall. Point to the top half of the butcher and explain that this is the sky. Point to the bottom half of the butcher paper and explain that this is the water. Hold up each of the items from the Activity Page. Have the children identify what they see and if belongs in the sky or in the water. As they give you each answer, tape the item to the top or bottom half of the butcher paper. WHAT YOU SAY: During the activity: “I have some different pictures of animals that I want to show you today. Some of them go in the water and some of them in the sky. This part of the page will be our sky and this will be our water. I want you to call out the name of the animal and then tell me if this animal belongs in the sky or in the water. After the activity: “We know that birds and airplanes go in the sky and fish and boats go in the water, but who made the sky and water? That’s exactly what we’ll hear about in our Bible story today!”

SING AND PLAY

“Sing and Play” is an activity that uses gross motor skills and repetition to teach the memory verse. WHAT YOU NEED: A blue sheet or blanket WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Stand in a circle with the children. Tell everyone to hold onto the edge of the sheet. During the activity: When you say the word “sky,” you and the children will hold the sheet tightly and walk in a circle. When you say the word “water,” you and the children will stand still and make waves with the sheet by moving it up and down. After the activity: After you have done this a few times, add the memory verse. Each time you make “sky” or “water,” sing the words of this month’s memory verse to the tune of “London Bridge.” WHAT YOU SAY: Before the activity: “OK, everyone, I want you to pick up an edge of the blue sheet like this (demonstrate) and then step back until the sheet is tight.” During the activity: “Look! We made a big, blue sky! Now take a tiny step forward and move your hands up and down like this. (Demonstrate.) Look! We made water! Cool! Now listen to me. When I say the word ‘sky,’ we’ll pull the sheet tight. When I say the word ‘water,’ we’ll make waves. Here we go!” (Do this several times with the kids.) After the activity: “Now that you know how to do that, we’re going to add a little song. Just copy me and you’ll be singing it in no time! (Sing to the tune of ‘London Bridge’) “You made the world and everything in it, everything in it, everything in it. ‘You made the world and everything in it,’ Psalm 89:11. “Great job! Our memory verse tells us that God made everything! He made our world and EVERYTHING in it! How cool is that? Who made everything? God made everything!”

CREATION STATION

“Creation Station” is an activity that provides a visual for the children to review the Bible Story. Note: This activity is to be used as a large visual for the children. There are many options that can be used. The Activity Page can be printed as an 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, or train cars can be created with shoeboxes. The larger your class size, the larger your visual should be. If you choose to make the train cars out of shoeboxes, simply print the Activity Page on an 8.5x11 page and attach it to the bottom of the shoebox so that the bottom of the train car touches the floor when the shoebox is placed on its side. It is ideal to keep the train car that you build with the children each week in June and July so that you can display the entire train during Bible Story Review. If that is not possible, consider displaying the train car you complete each week in the hallway for parents to see that day. If you are choosing to connect the train cars from week to week, cut a small piece of yarn and tape it between the cars as you add one. WHAT YOU NEED: “Train Car Review” from the Activity Pages found on the Website, appropriate size white paper for your choice of train car (see above), “Happy Clouds” from the Activity Pages found on the Website, white cardstock, blue crepe paper, scissors, and clear tape WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Make the train car that you have chosen. Print the “Train Car Review” Activity Page on the appropriate size paper. Cut out around the train car. If you are using the shoebox, glue or tape the train car to the bottom of it. Copy the “Happy Clouds” Activity Page onto the white cardstock. Cut out each cloud. Make sure you have one cloud per child. Cut the crepe paper into three-inch strips. Make sure you have one strip for each child. During the activity: Have all of the children sit in front of the train car. Give each child a strip of crepe paper and ask them to come up and tape it to the bottom of the train car. It is OK if the strips overlap. Explain to the children that it is water and God made the water. Next, point to the top of the train car and explain that this is sky. Ask the children to come up and each tape a “Happy Cloud” to the sky. After the activity: Briefly retell the Bible story using the train car as a visual.

WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS

“Watercolor Drawings” is an activity that uses creativity skills as children watch the effects of water on their artwork and review today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: Coffee filters, paper towels, butcher paper or tablecloths, markers, 2 spray bottles filled with water WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Cover the tables with tablecloths or butcher paper. Place a paper towel with a coffee filter on top of it at each child’s seat. Put the markers in the center of the tables. Fill the spray bottles with water. Explain to the children that today you will see how water effects the pictures they create. (NOTE: Make sure the children understand that they will see what happens to their pictures when they get wet to avoid any child becoming upset that you are “ruining” their picture.) During the activity: Have the children color their coffee filters with markers, making sure they don’t press down too hard or cover the entire surface. Explain that you will make it “rain” by squirting their drawings with water. Have two leaders walk around the tables and spray each child’s coffee filter with water. You only need to spray each filter once or twice! After the activity: Pick up the paper towels and the coffee filters and move them to another surface to dry. WHAT YOU SAY: Before the activity: “Today, I want us to see how water changes the drawings we create. I want you to color your coffee filters with the markers and then we will make it ‘rain’ by spraying them with water. Let’s watch what happens to the colors when the water hits them.” After the activity: “Today we learned that God made sky and water on the second day of Creation. What happened to our drawings today? (Pause.) That’s right! They were rained on. I think the water makes them even more beautiful! Great job! I’m so glad God made the wind to blow in the sky and the water to make rain. Who made everything? You got it! God made everything!”

“Collect the Clouds” is an activity that uses gross motor movements to review today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: 2 large bags of cotton balls and 2 buckets WHAT YOU DO: During the activity: Show the children the cotton balls and explain that today you will pretend they are clouds. Place the buckets on the floor, about four feet apart, in an open area of the room. Explain that you will throw out the cotton ball “clouds” and the children are to collect them by placing them in the buckets. Continue dropping and collecting cotton balls as long as there is interest. WHAT YOU SAY: Before the activity: “Today we learned that God made the sky and water on the second day of Creation. Let’s play a fun game. Today I want to see how fast you can collect these ‘clouds.’” After the activity: “God made the sky and water on the second day. Do we find clouds in the sky or in the water? BUILDING A TRAIN

“Building a Train” is an activity that helps the children visualize the Bible story and gives them something to build and add to at home with their families. Note: This activity is designed for the children to take each craft home in June and July and build a “Creation Station” train of their own with their families. The parent note and engine (from June Week 1) should be sent home the first week that the child attends within this unit, so that the parents understand how to build the train for the next two months. If a child misses a week you may either try to make it up or simply send an empty train car home with instructions on how to complete it. Also, an easier assignment like simply coloring the train car to fit the day of creation is an option for a make up. WHAT YOU NEED: “Make a Train” from the Activity Pages found on the Website, white cardstock, blue watercolor paint, paint brushes, small cups, water, cotton balls, glue sticks, and scissors WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Copy the “Make a Train” Activity Page onto the cardstock. Cut out each train car. Each child will need one train car. Fill the cups ¼ full of water and place them on the table with the paint and paintbrushes. During the activity: Instruct the children to paint the bottom of the train car with the blue paint. Next, assist the children in gluing the cotton balls to the top of the train car to resemble clouds. After the activity: Send home the finished train cars and encourage the children and parents to add it to the train that they have made at home.

WHAT YOU SAY: Before the activity: “We are going to make another train car that you can take home and put on your wall! During the activity: God made the sky and water.
