God Made Me

Bible Verse God made me (adapted from Genesis 1:27-28).

Genesis 1:27-28

In these verses, we learn of the heart of God’s creation: the forming of man and woman. Notice that we are the only creatures made in God’s image. That was a special blessing that only we received. Help your children understand that we must treat one another with special respect and care because God created us in his image.

Prayer • Read Colossians 3:5-10. • Think about what Paul says we’re to do here. What do these things have to do with being created in God’s image? • Pray: God, since I’m made in your image, help me to live up to what you hope for me. Help me be what you want me to be by… Help the children I teach to…

It’s important to say the Bible Point just as it’s written in each activity. Repeating the Bible Point over and over throughout the lesson will help kids remember it and apply it to their lives.

Arrival Activities n Welcome Time SUPPLIES: name tags (p. 8), marker, tape or safety pins, CD player • Play “A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea” from the CD (track 14) track 14 as children are arriving. • Use Cuddles the Lamb to help you greet each child by name and with a warm smile. • Tape or pin a name tag to each child’s clothing. • Say: Today we’re going to learn that God made me. • Place Cuddles out of sight so the children won’t be distracted by him during the next activity.

n Option 1: Mirror, Mirror SUPPLIES: mirrors Place mirrors on a low table, and let children look at themselves. Talk with children about what they see. Point out the color of their eyes, the color of their hair, and what makes them special. Ask questions such as “What color are your eyes?” “How many ears do you have?” and “Where is your forehead?” Lead each child in saying, “God made me.”

n Option 2: Who Am I? SUPPLIES: mirrors, dress-up clothes, masks, purses, wigs Set out dress-up clothes, purses, masks, and wigs for the children to try on. As they look at themselves in mirrors, ask who they are and if they’re the same children even if they are wearing different clothes. Ask questions such as “Are you Cinderella, or are you still Maria?” and “Are you a cowboy, or are you still Jake?” Remind children that God made them.

n Pick-Up Time SUPPLIES: CD player track 3

As Arrival Activities draw to a close, gently mention that it will soon be time to clean up. Encourage children to help you pick up the things in the room as you lead them in singing “Let’s Pick Up All Our Things.” Use the CD (track 3) and sing the song to the tune of “Looby Loo.”

Bible Story Time n Bible Song SUPPLIES: Bible, CD player Say: Who made you? Who made me? In Genesis 1:27, the track 4 Bible says that God made you and God made me! Show children the Bible. The Bible is God’s special book. The Bible tells us about God. Let’s sing a song about the Bible. Using the CD, lead children in singing “God’s Special Book” (track 4) to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” This is God’s special book. Yes, it’s God’s book you see! I learn about all God has done, And his love for me! (Repeat.) Bible!

Wait for children to tell you what they see. Encourage each child to tell you something about the picture.

Before class begins, prepare your StoryBoard by following the assembly instructions provided in the Learning Lab. The purpose of the StoryBoard is to provide an interactive, sensory learning opportunity for your toddlers and 2s. Please attach the sensory items securely so the children can touch them without danger of pulling the items off or putting them into their mouths. Take the plush heart from the Learning Lab.

Place the CD player and the punch-out figures of the children from the StoryBoard on the floor beside you. Hold the folded StoryBoard, and say: We have been learning that God made the world and that God made the animals. Today we will learn that God made you and God made me. Unfold Panel 1 of the StoryBoard, which shows a mirror and an oval hole for a

face. Have children take turns peeking through the oval. As each child puts his or her face through the oval, say: God made [name of child]. Have each child say, “God made me.” After everyone has looked through the oval, say: Thank you, God, for making all of us. Look, we can see ourselves in the mirror! As you allow each child to look in the silver metallic paper, ask: • Whose face is in the mirror? (Mine; Madison’s.) • What color are your eyes? (Black; brown; blue.) • Who made you? (God made me.) Say: God made you, and God made me. God made us in his image. That means God made us like him. God made us with eyes and noses and ears and tongues and hair. Ask: • Where is your hair? Touch your hair and wait for children to repeat the action. • What color is your hair? (Brown; yellow; red.) God gave each one of us a head. Where is your head? Pat your head and wait for children to respond. God gave us hands. Show me your hands. Wave your hands palm-side out at the children and wait for them to respond. God gave us legs. What can you do with your legs? Kick your legs in place and then pause. God gave us arms. What do we use arms for? Hug yourself and then pause. Hold up the plush heart. God gave each of us a heart inside us. Can you feel your heart beating? Place your hand over your heart and wait for children to repeat the action. Say: God made you, and God made me. And God made each one of us special. You are so special that God sent his only Son, Jesus, to earth for you!

Let’s see what other special things God gave us. Panel 2 Reveal Panel 2 of the StoryBoard. Say: Look at these children enjoying the outdoors. Did you know that God gave us lots of ways to enjoy the world? God gave us eyes to see with. Blink your eyes. Pause. God gave us ears to hear with. Show me your ears. Pause. He gave us noses to smell with. Pat your nose. Pause. God gave us tongues to taste with. Stick out your tongues. Pause. And God gave us fingers to touch things with. Wiggle your fingers. Pause. God made you, and God made me with all these special things. Let’s find the little girl. We can use our fingers to touch her blanket, and we can use our ears to hear what she hears. Listen. Play the “Bird Sounds” ­segment of the CD (track 12), and then turn off the CD player. Let each child touch the blanket. Ask: • How does the blanket feel? (Soft; warm.) Then say: We can find the boy who’s using his nose to smell the flowers.

Can you smell the flowers, too? Invite each child to scratch and sniff the flower sticker. Ask: • How did the flower smell? (Pretty; nice.) Then say: Oh, look at the boy tasting ice cream. Let’s feel the ice-cream cone; then I have something for you to taste. After children have touched the ice-cream cone, hand them each a piece of banana and let them eat. Ask: • Did you like the taste of the fruit? (Yes; I want more.) Say: Tongues are nice because they can taste yummy foods. God made us special, didn’t he? Let’s see how else God made us. Panel 3

Important: Put away the StoryBoard out of reach of children. Return the plush heart to the Learning Lab.

Unfold Panel 3 of the StoryBoard, which shows a park scene. Say: Look, these children are playing in the park. They’re running and jumping and sliding and having fun! When God made us, he gave us bodies that can move. Can you wiggle your fingers? Pause. Can you clap your hands? Pause. Can you tap your toes? Pause. It’s fun to move our bodies. Now let’s move our fingers as we point to pictures on the StoryBoard. Point to Panel 3. Ask: • Who can find the children playing in the sandbox? Let children take turns finding and touching the sand. • Can you find the child by the balance beam? Have children touch the craftstick balance beam. • Find the child on the swing. What is the swing shaped like? (An airplane.) • Where is the slide? Let children point to the slide. Give each child a turn to position or reposition a punch-out figure on Panel 3. Each time a child places a figure, help him or her say, “God made me.” Say: God made you, and God made me. And God made each one of us special. You are so special that God sent his only Son, Jesus, to earth for you! Let’s sing a song about how God made us.

Bible Activities n Interactive Bible Bulletin Board SUPPLIES: facial feature, ear, and hair patterns (p. 125); bulletin board paper; scissors; construction paper; tape Before class, cover your bulletin board with solid-colored paper. Photocopy and cut out ovals, hair, ears, and facial features using the patterns. You may wish to color the facial features with markers or crayons. Place an oval for each child on the bulletin board to represent faces. Children will add facial features later. Examples of finished faces are illustrated.

Bring out Cuddles the Lamb. Go through the following script, and then place Cuddles away out of sight of the children.

Cuddles:

( Covering his eyes) Hi, everybody. I can’t hear you so well today because I’m covering my ears.

Teacher: Hello, Cuddles. And those aren’t your ears you’re covering. Cuddles: These aren’t my ears? Teacher: Children, can you tell Cuddles what he’s covering? (Lead children in telling Cuddles that he’s covering his eyes.)

Cuddles: (Uncovering his eyes) Thank you! I thought those were my ears. Teacher: Well, we have ears, but we also have eyes and noses and mouths and bodies that move. God made us in his image. That means that God made us like him.

Cuddles: Hey! You all have eyes and ears and noses and mouths and bodies, too. Teacher: That’s right, Cuddles. God made you, and God made me. In fact, God made us all,

and we’re all special. Would you like to help us put happy faces on the bulletin board?

Cuddles:

Yes, that would make me happy!

Lesson 10

Help the children tape facial features, ears, and hair to the bulletin board. Point to facial features on each child’s paper face shape and say, “God made [name of feature].” Then say, “God made you, and God made me.” Have children repeat the Bible Point with you.

Ask: • What did God give us to listen with? (Ears.) • What did God give us to see with? (Eyes.) • What did God give us to smell with? (Noses.)

Teacher:  Cuddles learned that God made lambs, and we’ve learned that

n Sing It Out The Bible Craft should be safe for classroom use if you’ve glued down the foil. However, there is a danger that children could pull off the foil and put it in their mouths. Tell parents that children shouldn’t play unsupervised with their mirrors.

SUPPLIES: CD player Using the CD, lead children in singing “God Made Every One of Us” (track 15) to the tune of “A Sailor Went to Sea Sea Sea.” The lyrics and motions are on pages 120-121. Say: Every time we look in a mirror, we see who God made. God made you, and God made me. Now we can make pretend mirrors. track 15

n Bible Craft SUPPLIES: small paper plates, large craft sticks, aluminum foil, glue, scissors For each child you’ll need a paper plate, a large craft stick, and a piece of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around the plate. Before class, trim away the curved outside edge of each paper plate. Glue a craft stick to each plate. Help children wrap aluminum foil around their plates as you glue it in place. As children look in the mirrors they’ve made, ask questions such as “Who do you see in your mirror?” “Who’s special?” and “Who made you?” Say: God made each of us special. No one else in the whole world looks just like you. God made me, and God made you. We can sing a song and play a game to remind us how special we are.

n Bible Game SUPPLIES: CD player track 16

Using the CD, lead children in singing and doing actions to “God Made You” (track 16) to the tune of “Humpty Dumpty.”

Reach out your arms And bring them around. Give me a hug Before you sit down.

God made your hand, And God made your toes. God made your eyes, And God made your nose. (Repeat.)

Turn off the CD player, and lead children in the motions as you say the following words. Say: God made each one of us. He made our eyes (point to eyes). He made our noses (point to nose), our mouths (open mouth), our hands (wiggle fingers), our legs (hop up and down), and our feet (march in place). Lead children through these motions two or three more times.

Closing n Appreciating Who We Are SUPPLIES: round crackers, canned frosting, chocolate chips, plastic knives, napkins Seat children at the snack table. Set out crackers, chocolate chips, canned frosting, plastic knives, and napkins. Help children spread frosting on crackers and make faces by adding chocolate chips for eyes, noses, and mouths. Say: These crackers have faces, too! They have eyes, noses, and mouths. When children have finished eating their cracker faces, lead them to the bulletin board. Say: We’ve learned how God created you and me. Let’s say thank you prayers to God for making us. Encourage children to finish the sentence “Thank you, God, for our…” and name their facial features. Close the prayer by saying: God made me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For Extra Time If you have a long class time or want to add additional elements to your lesson, try one of the following activities.

n I Can Hear Let children take turns making noises and guessing what the noises are. For example, they might make a noise like a baby crying, a car starting, or a dog barking. Give each toddler an opportunity to make a noise for the other children to guess. Remind children that God gave us ears to hear with.

n Do What I Do Lead children in fun actions that let them follow their natural desire to wiggle and move. Encourage them to do exactly what you do. Start with simple movements such as waving your arms or blinking your eyes. Then put two movements together, such as clapping and hopping or hopping on one leg and then on the other. Finish with a big stretch. Explain that God gave us bodies that like to stretch and move.
