Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE February 5-7, 2012 Purity That Glorifies God—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): Say: Even though you’re still young, God created you to achieve many things. One thing that I’m glad you’ve accomplished is . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of these verses. Truth • The highest motivation for purity should be to glorify God. Untruth • You really can’t expect normal teenagers to save sex for marriage. • If you could prevent diseases and pregnancies, sex outside marriage would be fine. • Your private life does not matter as long as you go to church. 3. Explore Scripture: Explain that John Wesley was a famous English pastor in the 1700s. Share this interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:20 credited to Wesley: Devote and employ all ye have, and all ye are, entirely, unreservedly, and forever, to his glory. Point out that there are many motivations for living a pure life, but glorifying God is the most important of all. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this activity. 5. Nail It Down: Say: Obedience to God’s clear commands related to purity honors Him. When people see complete and unapologetic obedience to Him, His glory and fame grow. Encourage family members to suggest ways they can protect themselves from tempting situations and can bring more glory to God through their choices and actions. 6. Pray: Invite each child to share his or her greatest need today. Stand over each of your children, lay hands on them, and pray for their greatest need. 7. Blessing: Say: I bless each of you as you continue to live out a life of purity. I desire to see great glory rising to God because of the righteousness of this home. Parent Tip: Parents must not depend on the church to teach children about salvation. The church is a great help, but parents are primary. With eternity in the balance, parents must not leave anything to chance. They must teach Scripture about salvation until they are certain each of their children clearly understands.
