Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE November 6-8, 2011 Finding Your Just Cause—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: While I look forward to being out on my own some day, one thing I will miss about living at home is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Malachi 3:5; James 2:14-17

Truth • God expects believers to go beyond just believing in justice to acting in ways that bring justice to those who need it. Untruths • As long as I support the idea of justice, it doesn’t matter if I actually get involved. • Religion is mainly an attitude, so I just concentrate on that rather than action. • There is so much wrong that it’s a waste of time to even try to change things.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Say: I want the family to call out examples of people who need justice in our day. (Possible answers: widows; orphans; discrimination or prejudice; those who are suffering under a corrupt government; the homeless; those caught in human trafficking; workers with no protection from dangerous working conditions, and so forth) Say: I now want to ask each of you to choose some issue that you will bring to Christ in prayer. Ask Him how He wants you to become personally involved in the issue. (Consider going first so that others will follow your example.) 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Stand behind each family member one at a time. Place your hands on each person’s shoulders and pray that Christ will reveal His specific will about involvement in a just cause to that person. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Which adults in your church have blessed you? Share with your parents the names of these adults and ask them to say a quick prayer of thanks to God for their investment in your life.
