High School Students Receive Bert Corona Scholarship Students to Participate in Leadership Institute in Washington, DC

High School juniors Elpidio Chalico and Maira Moreno were named recipients of the Bert Corona Scholarship. The scholarship, awarded from the Bert Corona Leadership Institute, promotes strengthening civic participation and education, and promoting economic advancement and leadership. The program is designed for Migrant and Immigrant middle school, high school, and college students, as well as adults. Elpidio and Maira will travel to Washington, DC, the week of June 5th—10th this summer. Among some of the planned activities, they will have a chance to meet with Congressional representatives, tour US government agencies, as well as visit various business, banking, and labor organizations. The scholarship and Migrant funds from Region 13 covers all travel, tuition, room, meals, supplies, tours, and transfers. Accompanying the students on the trip will be Blanco ISD Migrant recruiter Danet Blanco ISD Goal # 2 Suarez, who was selected as a chaperone Blanco ISD graduates will be of the students. Only college and post-high school ready.

I look forward to going to Washington DC.” Maira Moreno said, “I feel very honored to be chosen. It is a great opportunity to learn how to be better leaders. Six Blanco Panther Band students qualified for the state Solo and Ensemble Contest to be held May 28 and 30 at the University of Texas and Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville. The percussion ensemble of William Torre, Warren Gibbins, Travis Bailey, Jesse Troublefield, and Alina Aly achieved their second straight trip to state, qualifying in regional competition February 5 at Randolph High School. On February 26, Rebecca Dowlearn qualified as a piano soloist at the contest held at Madison High School. “Congratulations to the Panther Band and each student on another fine performance,” said band director Davis Shirk. The Middle School band will perform at the UIL Region 12 Concert and Sight Reading contest on Monday, March 7, at 2:10 PM, at Canyon Lake High School. They will play Honor Guard March, Sakura, and Atlantis. The High School Band will perform at the UIL Region 12 Concert and Sight Reading contest on Tuesday, March 8, at 11:30 AM, at Canyon Lake High School. They will perform Marche Militaire Francaise, In the Shining of the Stars, and Blue Ridge Rhapsody.
Blanco Elementary teacher Collin Gaskamp was awarded with the Lamar Medal by Blanco Masonic Lodge # 216 in ceremonies held yesterday at the Blanco Elementary library. “I am very honored to receive this distinguished award,” said Gaskamp. “I accept this award on behalf of all of the excellent teachers at Blanco Elementary that go above and beyond the call of duty each day. I would like to thank the Masons for continuing to provide support and recognition to all public schools across Texas.” Bill Rife, representing the Blanco Masonic Lodge, highlighted some of the attributes of the honoree. “She contributes to the campus in many ways. Not only is she the school’s Instructional Technologist, but she keeps the system running campus-wide. She maintains multiple data bases, and keeps the school connected to all necessary websites day in and day out.” “She tutors kindergarten students in Reading during the day and third grade students after school. She compiles reports, and presents them in order to help students, teachers, the principal, and central office strive to reach the goal of excellence at Blanco Elementary.” “She has a weekly photo column in The Bell, and helps with GIST, administering tests, and filling in when needed.” “Collin Gaskamp is an outstanding member of the BES faculty.” Gaskamp began working at Blanco Elementary in 2000 as a Pre-K teacher. In 2004, she began teaching kindergarten, and in 2008 she became the campus Instructional Technologist.
