fter rallying for a tie against a game-tested USA Under-18 team in its preseason opener, the Clarkson University Hockey team will officially begin the 2004-05 campaign when it plays a pair of games against Hockey East foes on the road this weekend. The Golden Knights, guided by second-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle, played a spirited exhibition contest against a talented USA squad without the benefit of one official practice. Led by seniors, captain Mac Faulkner (King City, ONT) and assistants Jay Latulippe (Saratoga Springs, NY) and Ken Scuderi (Bethpage, NY), the Green and Gold had been skating in captain’s practices throughout September. Latulippe supplied the offense with both Clarkson goals while junior Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE) was solid in goal with a 38-save effort in the 2-2 overtime tie at Cheel Arena on Saturday. Now with a game under their belts and a full week of practice under the direction of the Clarkson coaching staff, the Knights will head to New England this Friday and Saturday to play Providence College and UMass-Amherst. After the weekend series against the Hockey East foes, the Green and Gold will travel out to Michigan to play a two-game set against Wayne State in the Detroit area on Saturday and Sunday, October 1617. After the four-game road trip, another exhibition contest, against the University of Western Ontario, marks the Knights’ return to Potsdam on Thursday, October 21. Clarkson closes out the month of October with its final non-league games to start the 2004-05 campaign with a two-game series at Cheel against Niagara University. Picked to finish fifth in the ECAC Hockey League, the Knights open league play at rival Rensselaer on November 5.

The Providence College Friars will also officially open their season this Friday after defeating St. Francis Xavier, 4-1, in an exhibition contest at Schneider Arena on Sunday night. Guided by 11 th -year head coach Paul Pooley, Providence is out to improve upon last year’s 16-14-7 overall record. The Friars, who finished in fifth place in Hockey East last year with a 7-11-6 mark, are ranked eighth in the HE Coaches’ Preseason Poll. Guided by fifth-year head coach Don “Toot” Cahoon, the UMass Minutemen are looking to continue their rise in Hockey East. Under the direction of Cahoon, who raised the Princeton program to the top levels of the ECAC during his tenure in New Jersey, UMass enjoyed one of its most successful seasons ever in 2003-04, posting a 19-12-6 record. The Minutemen, who finished third in HE with a 12-9-3 conference mark last year, are only ranked sixth in the nine-team league in the preseason coaches poll, but with 21 lettermen returning Cahoon’s squad should be one of the tougher teams the Knights face this season. UMass defeated St. Francis Xavier, 2-1, in an exhibition game on Saturday in the Mullins Center.

THE SERIES: Against Providence, the Knights lead the overall series 31-15-1 starting with a 7-4 Clarkson victory on February 25, 1953 in Potsdam. Since the formation of Hockey East in 1984, the Knights and Friars have played each other only nine times with Clarkson holding a 63 advantage. Providence won the last meeting by posting a 4-3 victory in the opening round of its own Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament on December 27 last season. Clarkson shut out Providence in 2002-03 earning a 4-0 victory at Cheel Arena on November 29. The Knights’ last win at Schneider Arena was a 7-6 victory on January 14, 1995. Chris Blight leads the current Knights in scoring against Providence with two goals and one assist. Clarkson and UMass-Amherst will meet for the first time on Saturday.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: “Obviously we would have liked a better result, but overall I was pleased with the way our guys played,” stated George Roll on the exhibition game against the USA Under-18 squad. “We are not in game shape and we have not gone over too many systems, power-play and penalty-killing situations, but for the most part I thought we did a good job. The biggest thing was the play of our freshmen. I thought they responded very well. From top to bottom it was a solid effort from those guys. It gave them a chance before we go to Providence and UMass to get a game under their belts. I certainly thought the work ethic was there. We didn’t quit.” On the upcoming weekend against a pair of Hockey East teams, Roll remarked, “We had the opportunity to play Providence last year. They are similar to us; a very hard working, competitive team. Amherst is an up-and-coming team that many pick to be in the NCAA Tournament this year. We are going to have our hands full on the road against both those teams, but we are looking forward to getting together on the road as a team and playing two solid opponents.”

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The first drop of the puck for the 2004-05 season took place over the weekend, as three ECAC Hockey League teams were in action. Clarkson started things off on Oct. 2 with an exhibition game vs. the U.S. Under-18 National Team, and St. Lawrence played the U.S. U-18 team the following night. The big game of the weekend was Sunday afternoon, when Vermont played host to Maine in the national opener. It wasn’t the result the Catamounts were looking for, however, a soldout crowd (4,003) enjoyed the game at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The opening of the season also saw the debut of the ECAC Hockey League’s new website: www.ecachockeyleague.com. Launched on Oct. 1, the site has already seen numerous visitors. One of the new features of the site started up over the weekend, as all home games in the ECACHL will provide live in-game stats to the site. The “livestats” ran in all three games over the weekend and was well received by fans. This feature will tie into a live scoreboard, which during the league season, will be a place to get all of the updated scores from around the league’s rinks. Other items to look forward to on the site include a weekly audio “Around the League” broadcast, polls, contests, live stats and more. Throughout the season, visitors will also get to submit questions to the coaches, read profiles of players and view photo galleries. Other exciting news over the weekend saw two ECACHL teams ranked among the nation’s best in The Hockey News season preview. Dartmouth was ranked third nationally, while Clarkson earned the No. 9 spot. Looking ahead to the coming week, two more teams will open up play, with Colgate traveling to the mid-west to take on Ferris State and Rensselaer heads to the Maverick Stampede. Clarkson, St. Lawrence and Vermont will also be back in action facing competition from Hockey East, Atlantic Hockey, the WCHA and possibly the CCHA. The ECACHL season will be in full swing Oct. 15, when Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and Yale start practice.

ECAC Hockey League Preseason All-League Teams Announced Coaches and Media Pick Men's Players to Watch ALBANY, N.Y. -- The ECAC Hockey League announced the selections for this year's preseason all-league teams as chosen by the 12 head coaches and members of the media. The two lists include similar names and feature a wealth of talent. The ECACHL coaches selected forwards Tom Cavanagh (Harvard), Jon Smyth (Colgate) and Lee Stempniak (Dartmouth), defensemen Grant Lewis (Dartmouth) and Noah Welch (Harvard), and goaltender Steve Silverthorn (Colgate). The members of the media (27 voters) matched the coaches list with the exception of David McKee (Cornell) in goal and Hugh Jessiman (Dartmouth) instead of Cavanagh at forward. Smyth returns to the Raiders after helping lead his squad to the regular season crown last season. The junior was a first-team all-league selection and also earned Best Defensive Forward honors after picking up 42 points on 21 goals and 21 assists. Silverthorn also helped in that run, earning three shutouts and a 1.82 goals against average last season while backstopping the Raiders. He was also an honorable mention pick at the end of the season. The Crimson has leaders on both offense and defense in Cavanagh and Welch. The seniors helped their team win the ECACHL tournament title last year and would like to go out on top with another tournament crown and their fourth NCAA appearance. Cavanagh led Harvard in scoring as a junior with 36 points on 16 goals and 20 assists. Welch patrols the blue line with intensity, and was an honorable mention pick at the end of 2003-04. Another top defenseman in the league is the Big Green's Lewis, who was a first-team defenseman last year as a rookie. Stempniak joined his teammate on the top award list last season and combined with Jessiman, a 2003 NHL first-round selection, for 71 points last season, including 32 goals. Rounding out the two lists is Cornell's McKee, who was the co-Rookie of the Year last season after posting a 1.84 goals against average and four shutouts. 2004-05 ECACHL Coaches Preseason All-League Team F - Tom Cavanagh, Harvard F - Jon Smyth, Colgate F - Lee Stempniak, Dartmouth D - Grant Lewis, Dartmouth D - Noah Welch, Harvard G - Steve Silverthorn, Colgate

2004-05 ECACHL Media Preseason All-League Team F - Lee Stempniak, Dartmouth F - Jon Smyth, Colgate F - Hugh Jessiman, Dartmouth D - Grant Lewis, Dartmouth D - Noah Welch, Harvard G - David McKee, Cornell

"Down low, between the tops of circles, I've never seen anyone take it to the net like Lee does," said Big Green head coach Bob Gaudet. "He's very elusive and very strong on his skates." Nearly 1,000 Students Turn Out for Cornell Hockey Ticket Sale ITHACA, N.Y. -- Hockey madness hit the East Hill on Sept. 29 with the beginning of the annual Cornell men's ice hockey ticket line. The word went out shortly before 9 p.m. via e-mail, the athletic department website and local radio stations that students had to once again "do their time in the line" to get their hands on tickets to see the Big Red hockey squad in action at Lynah Rink this season. A total of 700 hundred numbers were passed out to undergraduates, and approximately 100 more students got on a waiting list, hoping that one of the coveted 1,200 seats will fall to them. Many other students, hearing the length of the waiting list, simply turned around and walked back to their residence halls.
