Principal’s Corner FINDING THE JOYS OF PARENTHOOD Have you noticed that sometimes when you ask a friend or colleague 'How was your weekend?' Their response is often 'What week-end, we had a soccer carnival!' Soccer Carnival can be substituted with any activity that involves the children. Parents live busy lives helping children to enjoy and make the most of what life has to offer. Raising children is hard work, often thankless and mind-numbing and yet often the most rapturous experience available to adults. Most parenting stresses its participants to their limits, no matter how much they love their children. Children upstage all the other components of their parents’ lives, and good parenting involves both helicoptering and disengagement. One parent said, “I have never quite sorted out the conundrum of how I could be distracted into thinking about something as tiresome as e-mail when I was with my beloved kids. If I lost all my e-mails, I’d manage, but if I lost my children, I’d never recover; yet still I sometimes find it hard to stay in the moment with them”. There is no contradiction in this seeming paradox; tolerating our children is the cornerstone of loving them. Children may complicate our lives but they also make them simpler. Children’s needs are so overwhelming, and their dependence on us so absolute, that it’s impossible to misread our moral obligation to them. We bind ourselves to those who need us most, and through caring for them, grow to love them, grow to delight in them, grow to marvel at who they are. Acknowledgement: “Under Pressure” by Andrew Sullivan – a review of All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood by Jennifer Senior (HarperCollins, 2013) in The New York Times, Feb 2, 2014 This past week we were delighted to see the number of students participating in the ANZAC Day March and even more delighted with their behaviour. For more than an hour, students waited without complaint. Congratulations boys and girls we are very proud of you! Thank you parents for allowing your child to participate in the march.

Bits and Pieces NAPLAN Years 3, 5 & 7 will sit the NAPLAN tests on 13-15 May. Tips for helping children with NAPLAN Nourishment & sleep. Make sure children are eating well and having a good night's sleep. As adults we know how an empty stomach and lack of sleep can affect our concentration. Don’t add to children’s anxiety by excessive talking about NAPLAN testing. Reassure them that they will have lots of practices.

Holy Spirit Fete This year Melissa Bonner has kindly stepped up (under the guidance of Felicity Alsemgeest) to take on the role of fete convenor. This is not an easy role, but one that Mel has taken on with great energy and enthusiasm and just a tiny amount of fear and trepidation! It's really not a role that many of us would want so I am asking you to support Mel in this role so hopefully she will continue as fete convenor in future years to come! The biggest tasks and majority of planning is completed, it is in the 'other' detail that we require your support. We have a well resourced school due to parent generosity so if you are unable to assist in any other way this year then please try to commit by donating just one hour of time to work at the fete.
