HUMILITY CARES

6.

In verse 13 we read that the party was bigger for the one who was lost and then found than it was for the 99 who stayed. Does the apparent lack of fairness frustrate you? What does this passage tell us about God’s heart, and how can that change our heart toward the wandering?

7.

Look back at verse 12. How do we know when one of the flock has wandered off? What gets in the way of our knowing one has wandered?

Application 8.

9.

Discuss with your group how to approach someone who has wandered off.  What do you say or not say? 

What do you do if someone doesn’t want to come back home?

What do you do if someone rejects you?

What is the best way to get someone to come home?

What gets in the way of someone coming home?

Do you know someone who has wandered off? Is there something you can do to go search for and possibly help rescue them? What will you do to pursue them? If they were to turn and come back home, how do you think their life would be different?

10. Is there anything from the previous weeks that you would like to discuss further or update the group on? Share with your group any progress or positive steps you have taken so they can celebrate with you. Also, share any other praise or prayer requests with your group.

HUMILITY CARES Disciples ~ “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus ~ “Whoever takes the humble position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. … For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Matthew 18:10-14 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.”

1. Humility cares enough to ________________________________ for wanderers. How do we “despise” the wanderer? … Our words typically don’t despise the wanderer, but our lack of noticing their absence or our lack of searching communicates, “We don’t need you.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Getting to Know You 1.

There are a lot of great stories of search and rescue. Which one is most memorable for you? Why? Were you personally connected with it?

2.

What holds us back from going, or searching, after Christians who have gone astray?

3.

Have you gone astray? Do you feel you have come back home? If so, what is it that made you come back home? What was the coming home process like?

4.

Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged you, or confused you?

2. Humility cares enough to _________________. Humility means we put our busyness on hold to search, because we can’t claim to care unless we search. Not every search is successful; not even God gets what he wants all the time. “And if he finds it, …”

“This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3-4

3. Humility cares enough to extend the invitation, “__________________________.” Is home a welcoming place or a place of blame and shame?

Into the Bible 5.

Read Matthew 18:10-14. What reasons do we give for just being content to stay with the 99? What are some ways or sayings we use to justify not going after the one lost?
