OPENING TIP It’s a busy week for the University of Indianapolis women’s basketball team, as the Greyhounds get set to take on a trio of opponents, two hailing from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the other from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Hounds open up their regular season home schedule on Tuesday night, taking on the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University at 5:15 p.m. Two nights later, UIndy welcomes the Warriors of Wayne State University to Nicoson Hall for a 6 p.m. start time. On Saturday, the Greyhounds will head back out on the road and travel to Midland, Michigan for an early afternoon battle with the Timberwolves of Northwood University. ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS Cedarville enters Tuesday night’s game in search of their first win of the 2014-15 campaign after dropping a pair of contests against Ashland (62-43) and Ohio Domininican (81-74, 2OT) this past weekend. A total of 11 Yellow Jackets have all seen the floor for at least 20 minutes this season. Cedarville is led in scoring by Breanne Waterworth, Kaysie Brittenham and Whitney Robinson, as all three players averaged eight points per contest last weekend. Under 15th year head coach Kirk Martin, Cedarville was picked to finish at the top of the G-MAC this year following a 27-4 season in 2014-15 that earned the program its first ever NCAA Tournament berth. GREYHOUNDS VERSUS THE YELLOW JACKETS The last time the two teams met was back on Dec. 6, 2014. Princess German (20 pts), Kelly Walter (16 pts) and Nicole Anderson (14 pts) all recorded double-figures for the Hounds, but it was Cedarville that walked away with a 68-58 win at the Callan Athletic Center in Cedarville, Ohio. ABOUT THE WARRIORS A powerhouse in the GLIAC for the last three years under head coach Carrie Lohr, the Warriors are coming off a pair of wins to open up their season last weekend. Wayne State’s defense led the charge, allowing 45.5 points per game and 25.2 percent shooting from the field in a pair of wins over Ohio Valley and Salem Internation in Painesville, Ohio. Ashley and Shannon Wilson pace the Warriors on offense with Ashley’s 13 ppg off the bench topping all scorers. A starter in both games last weekend, Shannon Wilson is right behind Ashley on the leaderboard, chipping in with 12 points per contest. GREYHOUNDS VERSUS WARRIORS The two teams tangled with each other last year on Nov. 14 in Detroit in what was the Greyhounds’ season opener a year ago. German topped the Greyhounds with 16 points, but the defense was no match for a Warrior offense that shot 52.7 percent (29for-55) from the floor on their way to a 77-59 win. ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES Saturday’s game will be the third straight contest against a GLVC school to open the year for the Timberwolves. Northwood opened the season with a 7-59 win over Saint Josephs on Friday before dropping Saturday’s contest to No. 2 Lewis, 78-57. Jordyn Nurenberg (19.5 ppg), Lauren Robak (14.5 ppg) and Maddy Seely (11.5 ppg) lead the offensive charge for a Northwood offense that averages 65.5 points through two games. GREYHOUNDS VERSUS THE TIMBERWOLVES Saturday’s match will be just the third ever meeting between the Greyhounds and Timberwolves. Last year was the first meeting between the two programs after an 11year break that saw Northwood come away with a 68-58 victory over the Greyhounds in Nicoson Hall.

2015-16 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GREYHOUND NOTES

LAST TIME OUT The Greyhounds opened the 2014-15 campaign on the road on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14. Against Walsh University on Friday night, the Greyhounds struggled to hold on to the ball, committing 23 turnovers and shooting only 34.9 percent from the floor in a 60-44 defeat at the hands of Walsh University. One day later, the Hounds faced an early deficit against Malone University before battling back within two points early in the third quarter. But the Hounds were never able to pull ahead of the Pioneers, falling victim to 15 Malone three-pointers in an 80-66 loss. BACKCOURT LEADING THE CHARGE UIndy has gotten the majority of their contributions on offense from their guards early in the season, with senior guard Princess German leading the team with 19.5 points per game on 41.9 percent (13-for-31) shooting from the field. The 2015 Second Team All-GLVC selection topped the Greyhounds in scoring in each of their two games last weekend, finishing with 16 points against Walsh before dropping a game-high 23 against Malone. The only other Greyhound to average in double-figures after one weekend is sophomore Tina Negoescu, who averaged 12 points on 44.4 percent (8-for-18) shooting, knocking down six three-pointers over the weekend. After netting 11 points against Walsh, Negoescu earned her first career start against Malone and finished with 13 points on Saturday. NEW CAREER BESTS Three Greyhound returners matched or set at least one new single game career best during last weekend’s action. Negoescu made the largest dent in her personal file, setting new highs in points (13), rebounds (7), field goals (4), three-pointers (3), free throws (2) and minutes played (26) against Malone. Her two assists against Walsh on Friday were also a new career best. Sophomore forward Ashley Montanez set new career bests in points (12) and field goals in a game (6) while dishing out four assists on Saturday against Malone. In addition to leading the team in scoring, German also matched her career best mark when she pulled down seven rebounds against Malone. HOME OPENERS UNDER POPA Constantin Popa is 2-2 in home openers during his tenure behind the UIndy bench and will be aiming to earn the first win by any Greyhound team on Ray Skillman Court inside Nicoson Hall on Tuesday night. They Greyhounds will also look to snap a two-game slide in home openers. The last time a Popa led team opened up home play with a win was back on Nov. 10, 2012, a 77-49 win over Lake Superior State. NEW RULES CHANGES The NCAA implemented a few rules changes to the women’s game for 2015-16. The most noticeable one will be the change from 20-minute halves to 10-minute quarters. There will also be no more 1-and-1 free throw opportunites as each team will shoot two free throws starting with the fifth foul of each quarter. The ball may be advanced to the front of the court on a timeout within the last 59.9 seconds of the game. On the court in the post, a defender may place a forearm or open hand on the post player with the ball. Media timeouts will be given at the first stoppage at or below the 5:00-mark of each period. A team-called timeout before 5:00 will become a media timeout

2015-16 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH CONSTANTIN POPA (5TH SEASON)

seeded Drury in the quarterfinals.

Constantin Popa (pronounced CON-stan-teen POH-puh) will be aiming to get the Greyhounds back to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in the last five years, following the program’s first national tournament abscense since 201011, the year before Popa was named Greyhounds’ head coach.

Believed to be the tallest coach in NCAA history, the 7-foot-3 Popa spent four seasons as the top assistant on the Greyhound bench before being promoted to the “big chair.” In his time as an assistant, the Hounds won 89 games and tied a program record by garnering three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, including a “Sweet 16” appearance in 2009.

The Greyhound bench boss guided UIndy to a 12-16 record in 2014-15. The Hounds qualified for the GLVC Tournament, earning a 72-51 win in the opening round on the road against Truman State University before falling to top-

In 2009-10, Popa’s third season as UIndy assistant, the Greyhounds posted a 26-4 record and fi nished the regular season atop the GLVC East Division. The Hounds also put together a school-record 24-game win streak that year, on the way to receiving the highest ranking in program history -- No. 2 in the USA TODAY ESPN Division II Coaches Poll.

Popa guided three Greyhounds to Second Team All-GLVC selections in Princess German, Kelly Walter and Nicole Anderson, with Walter setting the single-season program record for three-point field goals after knocking down 80 in 2014-15. In 2013-14, Popa guided the Hounds to a 23-9 (13-5 GLVC) mark in earning the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament. The ‘13-14 team set program records for single-season points (2,488) and threepoint field goals (248), and ranked in the top five in scoring (77.8 pts/ gm), field goals (852), free throws (536),field goal pct. (.473), free throw pct. (.776) and blocks (161). Popa’s teams sit as the top three in single-season blocks, with the 201213 squad holding the record at 181. He coached two All-GLVC selections in Katy McIntosh (first team) and Eliza Wortman (second team, all-defensive team) last season. McIntosh finished her Greyhound career seventh on the all-time scoring list (1,495). Wortman leaves UIndy with the second-most career blocks (142).

All told, UIndy has made six NCAA appearances in the seven seasons with Popa on the bench.

Popa mentored 2010 GLVC Player of the Year and All-American Samantha Meissel, as well as all-conference forward Katie Lyons. The pair represents the only two UIndy women to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor in each of their four years on campus. Before joining the Greyhound staff in 2007, Popa spent two years as the varsity girls’ head coach at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Fla.

As a collegian, Popa excelled for the University of Miami Hurricanes from 1991-95. The Bucharest, Romania native was a two-time All-Big East performer and fi nished his career with more than 1,100 points and 700 rebounds, while his 263 career blocks still rank as the program’s Collegiate playing experience University of Miami benchmark. After college, Popa was drafted in the second round of the 1991-95 1995 NBA draft by the L.A. Clippers and later went on to star in both France and Israel as a professional. Overseas, he helped three different European teams to a total of five national titles in two countries and was also a member of the Romanian National Team

JEN CONLEY is in her second stint on the Greyhound staff and entering her fifth season as top assistant.

Previously, Conely spent 2007-09 as a graduate assistant before moving into a full-time position on the UIndy bench for the 2009-10 season. She then took a hiatus during the 2010-11 campaign before taking on her current roll. Conely’s team duties include on-court coaching, recruiting, monitoring academic progress and camp marketing. During her seven combined years at UIndy, the Greyhounds have had one of their most successful runs in program history. The team has compiled a 145-68 (.681) record, while making the NCAA Tournament in six of the last seven seasons. The 2008-09 squad set a school-record with two NCAA Tourney wins, as the Hounds knocked off a pair of top-10 squads to advance to the “Sweet 16”. Former UIndy basketball player TARRYN MONTGOMERY enters her fifth season as a full-time assistant in 2015-16 after spending the ‘10-’11 campaign as a graduate assistant. In addition to on-court coaching, Montgomery handles camp coordination, game scouting, and alumni relations. Montgomery helped the Greyhounds to 61 wins and three NCAA appearances the past three seasons. As a player, Montgomery was a guard on the UIndy squad in 2005-06 and 2006-07. After graduating in May of 2007, Montgomery played overseas for the BG Rentrop Women’s Professional Basketball team in Bonn, Germany during the fall of 2007.

Conely earned a Master’s Degree in History from UIndy in 2009. The Warren, Minn., native returned to her hometown for the 2010-11 academic year to teach history and science at Warren/Alvarado/Oslo High School. Conely graduated Summa cum Laude from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2007 while earning a B.A. in Secondary Education. During her senior season at FGCU, Conely was a contributor on a team that finished the 2006-07 season with a stellar 34-1 (.971) record while appearing in the NCAA Division II championship game. Conely won the FGCU Female Student Athlete Award after her fi nal year as an undergrad. Prior to her time at FGCU, Conely began her collegiate career at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D. 2015-16 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LAST WEEKEND - RECAP & BOX SCORE

Cavaliers use pair of runs to down Greyhounds in regular season opener NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The University of Indianapolis women’s basketball team tipped off the regular season on Friday night, taking on the Cavaliers of Walsh University at Alumni Arena. The Hounds and the Cavaliers were locked in a tight battle early in the first quarter, but a 13-0 Walsh run to close the opening frame gave the Cavs a lead they would not relinquish. UIndy closed the gap to as little as two points early in the second half before going cold the rest of the way in a 60-44 loss. Senior Princess German led the Greyhounds with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting and Tina Negoescu came off the bench to chip in with 11 points, knocking down a team-high three three-pointers. But the 23 Greyhound turnovers played a major role in Friday night’s defeat. “I think our biggest issue again tonight was our ability to take care of the ball,” said head coach Constantin Popa. “We had a few moments where we were in the game early and getting back in the game in the third quarter, but when you gift the opposition 23 turnovers, that’s hard to overcome. We played well at times but we need to focus on putting together a full 40-minute effort going forward.” The two teams exchanged three leads in the opening five minutes of the game and after a pair of free throws from Nicole Anderson with 4:53 to go in the first, UIndy held a slim 9-8 lead. It was the last time they found the net in the quarter as Walsh poured in 13 consecutive points to take a 21-9 lead after 10 minutes.

UIndy shook off their slow start and responded by going 7-of-11 from the floor in the second quarter with Negoescu pouring in all 11 of her points in the frame, helping cut the Walsh lead to 31-26 at the break. A free throw and layup from German to open the second half cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 31-29 with 7:38 left in the third, but the iron was unkind to the Hounds for the rest of the night as UIndy would connect on only six field goals the rest of the way. Walsh ripped off a 12-3 run to re-claim a double-digit lead and would add to it in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

to focus on sharing the ball and we’re still looking to find some consistency within our system. There’s not a whole lot of time to get ready for the next one, so we’ve got to be ready to put this one behind us tomorrow. We know we’ve got to limit our mistakes and if we do that, we’ll be in better shape to come away with a win.” ###

UIndy shot 34.9 percent (15-for-43) from the floor, going 5-for-23 from long distance. At the other end, the Cavaliers shot 35.7 percent (20-for-56) on the night, connecting on five of 18 tries from deep. Rebounds were 36-32 in favor of the Cavs with Ashley Montanez grabbing six to lead the Greyhounds. Walsh committed only 13 turnovers while forcing 23, picking up 19 points off UIndy mistakes. “We had some good possessions on offense and we had some players do a nice job tonight,” Popa added. “We need

Pioneers’ long-range barrage sends Greyhounds to second straight defeat CANTON, Ohio – Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the University of Indianapolis women’s basketball remains in search of their first win of the year following an 80-66 defeat at the hands of Malone University on Saturday (Nov. 14) afternoon. Four Greyhounds (0-2) recorded double-digits in points, with senior Princess German leading all scorers with 23 points. Tina Negoescu (13 pts), Ashley Montanez (12 pts) and Nicole Anderson (10 pts) also made significant contributions on the offensive end, but the Hounds were done in by 15 three-pointers from the Pioneers (1-0) in defeat. “On the offensive end I thought we did a pretty good job,” Head coach Constantin Popa said. “But it was good to see our team generate more offense and take care of the ball a lot better than we did last night. We saw a lot of good things from our lineup today, but it’s tough to win when you give up 15 threes in a game. We just need to keep improving as we try to get our rotation set. Now we’ve got a quick turnaround before a couple tough ones at home and we’ll be ready for them.” The Greyhounds grabbed an early lead thanks to a triple from Anderson, but the Pioneers would knock down four threes in the opening quarter to grab the lead. UIndy closed the opening 10 minutes on a 5-0 run to close the gap to 17-13 after one. UIndy cut the lead to two with an Emily Thomas bucket to start the second quarter, but three consecutive triples from Malone stretched the lead out to 26-17 and when the halftime horn sounded, the Greyhounds trailed, 34-28.

Malone opened up a double-digit lead early in the third quarter, but the Greyhounds ended the period on an 8-0 run to get within striking distance at 52-49 with 10 minutes to play. But a 12-3 Pioneer run to open the fourth quarter was enough to put the game out of reach. UIndy connected on 44.4 percent (24-for-54) of their field goals, knocking down 37 percent (10-for-27) of their three pointers and eight-of-nine free throws. Malone shot 44 percent (22-for-50) from the floor, burying 51.7 percent (15for-29) of their triples and 21-of-28 free throws. The Greyhounds held a 34-25 advantage on the glass with German and Negoescu pulling down seven rebounds each to lead all players. The Hounds cut down on the turnovers, committing only 16 to five for the Pioneers. Malone was able to take advantage of those 16 mistakes, turning them into 19 points at the other end. Next up for the Greyhounds is their regular season home opener on Tuesday night, when the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville Univesity travel to Key Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m.
