INTRAMURALS Basketball Rules OPEN/WOMENS/COREC ELIGIBILITY 1. Any current full-time or part-time student at Fresno State are eligible. Any Faculty and Staff who want to play must purchase a $ 25.00 Intramural Participation Card for each semester in which they wish to participate. 2. Every player MUST present a valid Fresno State ID card to the supervisor in charge of the field before EVERY game. 3. Current intercollegiate athletes are ineligible to compete in the same or related sport. 4. Members of sport clubs are allowed to participate in the respective intramural sport, however, a maximum of two sport club members are allowed on any one intramural team. You are considered a sport club member for 1-year after your sport club membership ends. 5. Each team must declare a team captain. Captains or a representative of each team MUST attend a designated captain’s meeting. Failure to attend a captain’s meeting will result in a forfeit. Participants are allowed to sign up as free agents and must attend a separate free agent meeting where they will be assigned a team. Failure to appear to a free agent meeting may result in removal from league. 6. Every team will get ONE late game that they will be able to use throughout the entire season. If a team decides to use their late game, they will get an additional 5 minutes before tip-off. Each team will also be allowed two forfeits throughout the season, on the third, the team will lose eligibility for the tournament. 7. Players signed up for a team may also play on an additional team. No player may play for two teams in the same division. Division 2 rosters may only have one Division 1 player registered. It is the captain’s responsibility to know who is on their team and if they are playing on multiple teams. Teams may be disqualified from tournament if there are illegal players on the roster.

8. Participants must play in two (2) league games to be eligible to play in tournament games. 9. It is up to the Intramural staff’s discretion to move a team up or down a division for the tournament. If a team, signs up for a specific division the staff may deem it necessary to move a team for the integrity of the program. If the Intramural staff believes a team is purposefully, playing at a lower level than what they are capable of, the team will automatically be moved up one division. SPORTSMANSHIP 1. Sportsmanship is everyone’s responsibility. We hope that everyone will conduct him or herself in a mature and friendly manner. Unsportsmanlike behavior may be called on any participant, substitute, or spectator. Team captains/managers are responsible for the conduct of their players and spectators. 2. All teams are required to maintain a 3.50 sportsmanship to be eligible for playoffs. Any team who receives two “3” ratings in the playoffs will be eliminated, regardless of whether they won or not. Any team who receives a “2” or lower rating in the playoffs will be eliminated regardless of whether they won or not.

3. TRASH: If a team leaves any trash on their court, they will be given a 3 in sportsmanship. Each team is responsible for leaving the court cleaner than when they arrived. 4. Spectators may be issued a technical foul or ejected if necessary. The foul and its ensuing penalty will be assessed to the captain of the team. 

Technical Foul  Arguing with officials, excessive arguing/language directed to players or officials. , and unnecessary contact, dunking before the game or at halftime. o Technical Foul = 2 free throw and possession of the ball. o Intentional Foul = 2 free throws and possession of the ball.

If a player receives 2 technical fouls any time during the regular season or tournament, the player will be placed on temporary probation until he/she meets with the program coordinator in charge of the activity. If a team receives four technical fouls anytime during regular season or tournament, a letter will be sent to the team captain/manager to inform him/her of their intramural status. Teams with four technical fouls may either be dropped from further play or be placed on warning. Teams on warning will be dropped from further play immediately if another technical is given to any team member.

EQUIPMENT 1. Only official IM basketballs will be used, unless both teams agree to use a different ball. If there is any disagreement, the IM basketball will be used. 2. Appropriate basketball attire is required. No boots or shoes with marking soles are allowed. No jean shorts or cutoffs. 3. No jewelry may be worn at anytime including: hats, sleeves, glasses, baller bands, necklaces, sunglasses, watches, earrings or any other piercings. If it is not naturally part of your body, it cannot be worn in a game. ONLY true sweatbands may be worn. The player is subject to a personal foul for violation of the rule and has to sub off the court. A substitute may check in with the scorer’s table and replace the player in violation. LOCATION 1. Student Recreation Center East and West Gyms. PLAYERS 1. Each team may have a maximum of 5 players on the court at one time. A team may begin a game with a minimum of 4 players. If injuries or ejections cause a team to drop below 4 players and the referee decides the team still has an opportunity to win the game, they shall continue. 2. A maximum of 10 players are allowed on a team roster. GAME PLAY 1. Each game will consist of two 18-minute halves with a running clock. The clock will stop for time-outs and the last three minutes of the second half for all regular stoppages of play. MERCY RULE: A team ahead by 30 or more points with 3 minutes remaining=game over. At 3 minutes remaining in the second half, a team that is ahead by 15 points will not be allowed to stop the clock, will continue to run. If the lead drops below 15 points, then the clock will stop. 2. There shall be two minutes between halves. 3. Each team will have 3 time-outs per game. One time-out is allowed for each overtime period. No accumulation of time outs is allowed. Timeouts are one minute in duration. 4. In the event of a tie game, during regular season play, the game will stand as a tie and each team will be credited with a win. During tournament play, in the event of a tie game, overtime will be played. The overtime period will last 3 minutes with the clock stopping the entire period. If a tie still exists, any other overtime is played until a winner is determined.

BASKETBALL RULES  The following 2016-2017 National Federation has published high school rules shall apply with these points being emphasized: 1. One and one style free throws will be awarded after six team fouls and two shots after nine team fouls per half. 2. During free throws, a player occupying a marked lane space may enter the lane on the release of the ball by the free throw shooter. The shooter and players outside the free throw area may enter once the ball hits the rim. 3. The following acts constitute a foul when committed against a ball handler/dribbler: a. b. c. d.

Placing two hands on the player. Placing an extended arm bar on the player. Placing and keeping a hand on the player. Contacting the player more than once with the same hand or alternating hands.

4. Dunking can only occur during game. Grabbing the rim before the game, during halftime, or after the game will be a technical foul. Please help us keep the rims in good playing condition by observing this rule. 5. Timeouts: The inbound following a timeout will be at the point of interruption.

COREC BASKETBALL RULES Intramural Coed Basketball uses the same rules as those used in High School Basketball with the following exceptions: 1. No more than two (2) males may be on the court at a time. A team must have at least one (1) male playing on the court at all times. No more than three (3) female players may be on the court at a time. 2. A male may only guard another male and a female may guard either gender. It is considered “guarding” if the male is within five (5) feet of the female and making an effort to interfere with her play (shadowing). The penalties are:  Non-shooting situation = violation  Shooting situation = a personal foul and an automatic two (2) points (one free throw is awarded if the basket is good).  Break-away situation = a personal foul, automatic two (2) points. 3. A male may set a pick on a female.
