Excerpts from the Publisher’s Report 2015, issued in April 2016: The Publisher’s Report for the previous year is issued every year in the spring. In this report, the publisher’s initiatives and campaigns in developing and expanding the distribution of all publications are listed, and a number of descriptive statistics concerning journal sales and distribution, downloads, and online access are reported and analyzed.

Among others, Wiley has been specifically focusing on society-related issues. A survey among society members and non-members revealed that high-quality information and education are expected from societyrelated journals, implemented by high-quality peer reviewed publications and other educational resources. I am confident that Veterinary Clinical Pathology (VCP) has fulfilled these expectations during the past years and will continue to do so in the future. Overall, VCP had another successful year. Full-text downloads of VCP content have increased 3% from 2014. The most downloaded articles in 2015 were downloaded over 100 times; the top 10 articles were collectively downloaded over 800 times. The global readership is dominated by the USA and Europe including collectively >60% of all readers, followed by Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and many other countries. With increasing use of digital and Internet tools, the speed of information distribution is increasing steadily, and a trend for enhanced transparency and accessibility of research data requested by funding agencies and government institutions not only puts pressure on rapid processing of submitted manuscripts, but also reducing cost of accessibility. This is in potential conflict with maintaining high traditional publication standards, as it requires input and time from individuals trained and experienced in such publishing standards. Much of this work is more and more being deferred to volunteers acting as editors and reviewers, while publishers increasingly outsource their typesetting and copyediting activities to countries with less experience in the publication business. Currently, it is not clear how decreasing and limited financial resources can make up for loss in quality standards due to major changes in the publication process aiming at increased speed of processing and more open distribution.
