THE LEAD: NJCU and Kean complete their two-day home-and-home NJAC series after Kean prevailed yesterday, 14-4. Kean is 20-7 (5-2 NJAC); NJCU comes in at 11-15 (1-6). LAST MEETING: In yesterday’s 14-4 win for Kean in Union, the Cougars scored six runs in the second inning and three more in the third before claiming an 11-0 margin. Joe O’Connor was one of six Cougars with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs, three runs and two walks. His fifth homer of the season, a first-inning grand slam, provided the eventual winning margin. Nick Zucchero scored four runs, batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Matthew Wagner was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double for NJCU. FAMILY AFFAIR: This year’s series is the first for NJCU head coach Jerry Smith and pitching coach Nick Cesare against the team they once starred for. Smith played for Kean from 1997-99 and was Honorable Mention All-NJAC in 1997. Cesare pitched for Kean from 2006-10 and was part of the 2007 national championship team and was a 2010 First-Team NJCBA All-State pick. WEN-ROD TO THE HILL: Junior righty Wendell Rodriguez is today’s probable starter. He enters with a 3-3 record and three saves in 12 appearances (six starts) with a 2.77 ERA. He has fanned 18 and walked just eight in 48.2 innings. Wen-Rod earned the save in NJCU’s win over FDU-Florham on Tuesday, entering the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning before retiring the next three batters to preserve the one-run win. He never had a save prior to this season. In Wen-Rod’s last start on April 7, he tossed his first career complete-game shutout. It was his eighth career complete game and third of the season. He is in a five-way tie for fifth place in school history with nine career wins. Wen-Rod’s last start against Kean came on April 14, 2011 in Union, NJ. He tossed a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks, but lost, 1-0.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION NJAC STANDINGS: Kean is currently tied for first place in the league with a 5-2 record and 10 points—matching William Paterson and Montclair State. Kean has won back-to-back NJAC titles (2010, 2011) and three of the last four conference crowns. NATIONALLY RANKED: Kean is currently ranked No. 8 nationally by D3baseball.com and 9th in the American Baseball Coaches Association Top 30 rankings. PITCHING WINS: As is typical with the pitching-rich Cougars under 15th-year head coach Neil Ioviero, Kean’s recipe for success starts on the mound. Kean leads the NJAC in virtually every pitching category and most by substantial margins—earned run average (2.11), opposing batting average (.234), batters struck out (214), batters struck out looking (79), least runs allowed (86), least earned runs allowed (58), opposing batting averages vs. lefies (.244) and righties (.231). As of Monday, Kean, as a team, ranked No. 3 nationally in ERA, 20th in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (7.88), 30th in strikeout-towalk ratio (2.38), and 33rd in strikeouts per nine innings (7.9). ***THE NCAA, ECAC, NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, STAFF AND SPECTATORS.
