Saturday, January 2nd at Kelowna Rockets YEAR IN REVIEW: The Victoria Royals played in their first game of 2016 last night. The Royals finished 2015 with a 44-23-2-2 record through 71 games. Victoria collected seven shutouts in the year, which included outscored their opposition 244-175. Royals’ forward Alex Forsberg led on offence in 2015 as he collected 72 points (28g-44a) over 69 games. PENALTY KILL PROWESS: The Royals and Rockets enter tonight’s contest sporting two of the best penalty killing units in the Western Hockey League. Victoria holds the fourth best record on the road at 83.8% and has only allow 11 goals against on 68 times shorthanded. The Rockets meanwhile, boast the top penalty kill unit on home at 90.9% Kelowna has only given up six goals through 66 times shorthanded. FIRST YEARS: The Western Conference’s top two rookie scorers will be facing off tonight as Victoria’s Matthew Phillips and Kole Lind are in first and second place respectively. Through 39 games apiece, Phillips has tallied 37 points (19g-18a), while Lind has registered 30 (13g-17a). The Royals’ rookie has compiled eight multipoint games, while the Rockets’ freshman has amassed six multipoint contests so far this season. BATTLE BETWEEN THE PIPES: Entering tonight’s contest the Royals’ Colman Vollrath and the Rockets’ Jackson Whistle are both in the top five in multiple goaltending categories in the WHL. Vollrath is fourth in the league for wins by a netminder with 18, while Whistle is tied for second in the league with 19 victories. Vollrath currently holds the third best goals against average (GAA) with 2.44 and fifth best save percentage (SV%) at 0.915. Whistle sports the fourth best GAA at 2.54 and third highest SV% at 0.920. BEST FOOT FORWARD: With Jack Walker’s goal in the opening period of the Royals’ last game, Victoria has now outscored the opposition 48-29 in the first stanza. The Royals have also outshot their opponents by a combined 424-348 margin in the opening 20 minutes of play. During the 2014-15 season Victoria was outscored 65-69 in the first period while being outshot 693-764. HEATING UP: Royals’ forwards Vladimir Bobylev and Tyler Soy are currently riding five and four game point streaks respectively. Bobylev has tallied five points (3g-4a) in the team’s previous five contests, while Soy has notched one goal and four assists in four games. PROSPECT REPORT: Victoria recently had seven prospects competing at the Mac's Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament in Calgary, AB. Forward Zach Russell won gold with the Calgary NW Flames and tallied 13 points (7g-6a) in six games, while forward Arjun Atwal of the SSAC Boston Pizza Athletics also collected 13 points (7g-6a) in five contests. Both players finished the tournament tied for second in tournament scoring.
