It's my choicE There are people and things that influence our decisions When you have to make a decision, what do you think about? If you were deciding where to go for the weekend, the following things might affect your decision. • Whether your friends have been there. • If an advertisement makes it look exciting. • How much it costs. • How much time you could spend there. • Other people who might be going there. • If your family is happy about you going. These things are called ‘influences’. Which would have the greatest influence if it was your decision about where to go for the weekend? Why? The more information we have about the choices we are faced with, the better our decisions can be. • With a partner, discuss all the decisions you have already made since waking up this morning. • Choose one of the decisions you made and think about the things that influenced this decision. • How did they influence you? • What information did you have that helped you to make this decision? • Looking back, do you think the decision you made was the best one?

Influences 1. Share examples of how each of the following things have influenced you at different times. The first example has been filled in for you.
2. Influences can be both negative (not helpful) or positive (helpful). If someone is drawing on a book in the library and wants you to join in, this would be a negative influence. If healthy food is for sale at the supermarket at a cheaper price than unhealthy food, this would be a positive influence. + A plus sign is the symbol for positive. A minus sign is the symbol for negative. Use these symbols (+ or - ) for the information you have listed above to show whether the influence is a positive or negative one. Use both symbols (+/- ) if it can be both. 3. Can you think of any other things that might influence people’s decisions?
