You won’t be reproducing the photo—you’ll be using it as inspiration. Choose one you really like—you will be looking at it a lot! If you’d like to use one of my photos, let me know that in an email. Fabric. In general, you want to choose fabrics that create a realistic feeling to your quilt, so no solid fabrics. 1 ¼ yard for Background: Concentrate more on sky than ground--consider time of day, time of year…batiks and hand-dyes are great. Remember that you will need good contrast with the trees and ground cover. You may wish to bring a second fabric to create the ground underneath foliage. Trees. Choose one or more fabrics with the color and texture you are trying to recreate. If your composition will have trees in both background and foreground, the colors will fade as they retreat. Consider using the backside to achieve this look. Yardage will vary depending on number of trees, size, how much of the print is useable. Get at least a fat quarter of the main fabric. Remember, we will add details and shadows with ink. Foliage and ground cover. Choose a variety of fat quarters with the colors and scale you need. More is better when trying to re-create Mother Nature! Glue stick. You can use one from the craft store or one specifically designed for fabric. We carry several at the store—I especially like Roxanne Glue-Baste-It. Marking pens: Black Sharpie fine point, black Sharpie ultra fine point. I will have a variety of pastels & other markers available for your use. If you have others you’d like to use, bring them! Craft size cotton batting Basic Sewing Supplies. If you aren’t sure what to bring, please download the list from our website or ask for a copy at the quilt counter in the shop. Including: Sewing machine, clean and ready to go. Please don’t bring a brand new machine that you have never used. It is important that you are familiar with the way your machine functions! Note: we won’t use machines on the first day Darning/free motion foot Size 90/14 Topstitch needles Thread will be determined by your choice of fabrics. You may wish to use monofilament thread. Small pointed scissors and larger shears Cutting mat and rotary cutter Machine extension table, if you have one.
