SUN DEVIL REWIND

After taking a 1-0 lead through the first 20 minutes on Friday night, the Sun Devils were outscored in the final five periods of the series with No. 3 Denver last weeekend. Both of ASU’s goals were scored on the power play, with the first coming nine minutes into game one and the last with three minutes left in the final match-up on Saturday. Redshirt junior WADE MURPHY tallied one of the Devils’ two goals, as he put the exclamation on one of the best power-play performance of the year. Freshman BRETT GRUBER netted his fifth goal of the season in game two. Despite the 11-2 advantage for the Pioneers, the penalties were as equally lopsided to the disadvantage of the Devils, 17-4. While ASU capitalized on two of their four opportunities, Denver’s 4-for-17 -- two on both nights -- got the fire started for the Pioneers in each game. This included back-to-back goals on the man advantage to take the eventual lead in the second period of game one. Outside of the penalties, ASU was outshot by the now No. 1 team in the country, 95-37.

UPCOMING MATCH-UP

For the first time as an NCAA Division I program, the Sun Devils take the ice against Ohio State for their third match-up with a Big Ten program this season. The Buckeyes, ranked No. 10 in the new poll, enter this weekend as one of the top offenses in the country. OSU ranks No. 3 in goals per game (4.22) and tied for 6th in total goals scored (76). Their led by Nick Schilkey, who’s totaled a team-high 15 goals and eight assists for 23 points. His 15 tallies lead the Big Ten and is good for third in the country. The highlight of the Buckeyes’ last two games was senior goalie Christian Frey, who made a total of 85 saves in two games vs. then-No. 2 Penn State, including a 46-save shutout. Up until the recent series, the Sun Devils’ offense was clicking with 28 goals in the previous seven games. Six-foot-six forward LOUIE ROWE was a contributing factor, tallying five goals and four assists during those seven games. Top-line winger WADE MURPHY has also been riding a hot hand, with three goals and three assists during that stretch. In just their first full season, the ASU offense ranks No. 28 in total goals scored and No. 38 in goals per game.
