SUN DEVIL REWIND

Following their worst loss of the season on Friday night, the Sun Devils once again proved they’re a tough team to sweep with a 4-4 tie -- and shootout win -- over Nebraska-Omaha in Saturday’s contest. Four different Devils -- and three defensemen -- scored in the game, including freshman blue-liner MAX BALINSON burying the game-tying shot with an empty net at his back with 38 seconds remaining in regulation. It was his first collegiate point and goal in just his third career game. Fellow freshman defenseman GVIDO JANSONS also scored his first collegiate goal, while senior forwards GAGE HOUGH and DAVID NORRIS earned their first apples of the season. Sophomore netminder JOEY DACCORD ultimately made 42 saves in the doubleovertime contest, including a highlight-reel save that made ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 6 play of the weekend and NCAA Hockey’s No. 1 Play of the Week. His back-to-back stops in the shootout, followed by junior forward JACK ROWE’s slick move, clinched the meaningless shootout. Sophomore defenseman JAKOB STRIDSBERG finished the game with a goal and an assist, thus taking over the team lead in goals scored. He’s recorded a goal in each of the last two games. The Devils now have five players with five points each through six games so far this season.

THA RAAAAAIDUHS

For the fourth-straight series, the Sun Devils will face a familiar opponent they have already clashed with during their NCAA tenure, as the Raiders of Colgate and ASU met just a season ago in Tempe. The teams split the series in warmer weather, with the Devils taking game one and the Raiders following up the next night allowing just five SOG in the final two periods for the 3-2 victory. The Raiders return six of their top-10 scorers from the 2016-17 roster this season, including their two freshmen -- Bobby McMann and Jared Cockrell -- who were in the top four. Similar to the Devils, Colgate’s scoring leader is a defenseman with three goals and two assists. Freshman d-man Nick Austin has a two-game point streak going, with a goal and two assists. Between the pipes, Dallas Stars’ draft pick Colton Point returns for the Raiders with a 2-0-2 record thus far, including a .949 save percentage and 1.68 goals against average in four starts. In 2016-17, he held a 2-5-2 record with a .918 save percentage and 2.45 goals against average.

FIRST TRIP BACK EAST

• After making six trips to the east coast in 2016-17, the Sun Devils make the first of only four this

season. The remaining trips this season include Holy Cross over Thanksgiving break, the Three Rivers Classic in Pennsylvania in December, and Yale in early February. • In 2016-17, the Sun Devils held a 5-6-0 record when traveling to the eastern time zone. • This trek to New York is the first for the Sun Devil program since their trip to Clarkson in their first NCAA season in Nov. 2015.

RETURN TO THE FOLD

• Eight of the 10 Sun Devils who recorded double-digit points in 2016-17 return this season, with the only

departures being Robbie Baillargeon and Wade Murphy. • Junior ANTHONY CROSTON was the only player to reach double-digit goals in 2016-17, and he returns with his linemates and fellow double-digit pointers LOUIE ROWE and DYLAN HOLLMAN. The trio also returns as the three leaders in 2017-18, with HOLLMAN serving as the captain for the second-straight season and officially longest tenured captain in ASU hockey history. CROSTON and ROWE will wear the A’s. • CROSTON, ROWE, HOLLMAN and sophomore TYLER BUSCH are the only players who are back with 10-plus assists a season ago, with HOLLMAN leading the pack with 12. • BUSCH is the next highest returning goal scorer, as the 6-foot-3 centerman returns as the top-line center this weekend after netting nine goals and 11 assists as a rookie. BUSCH got off to a hot start last season, netting a goal in each of his first four games in the NCAA.

to shine in their second season. Four of the top-10 scorers from a season ago were all returning sophomores, including BUSCH, JAKOB STRIDSBERG, BRINSON PASICHNUK and BRETT GRUBER. • Along with BUSCH, forward STEENN PASICHNUK finished strong after returning from his two-month injury, totaling two goals and six assists in the final two months of the 2016-17 season. In the final four games against Simon Fraser the USA U-18 development team, STEENN had a goal and three assists. • Goaltender JOEY DACCORD also finished strong, going 1-1-1 in his final three starts against No. 17 Quinnipiac and No. 9 Western Michigan. The tie came in an overtime victory, which is considered at tie, against the Broncos. Over the course of those three games, he made 138 saves. • STEENN’s brother, BRINSON, also comes into the 2017-18 season with high expectations. As the Sun Devils’ top defenseman and point on the top power-play, BRINSON came up with big plays in big situations. He netted two game-winners in 2016-17, including an impressive swat in overtime against New Hampshire and a late PP goal against Colgate to put them away. As a freshman, he finished the season with seven goals and seven assists.

LATVIAN LOVE

• The Sun Devils welcome their second and third Europeans to the roster, as Latvian

defenseman GVIDO JANSONS and forward FILIPS BUNCIS come to Tempe and join Swedish sophomore JAKOB STRIDSBERG. • Along with their hard-and-heavy style of play, the two both stand at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds and arrive at ASU from the NAHL. BUNCIS played with the Johnstown Tomahawks, where he wore the ‘C’ as the first European captain in Johnstown history. He netted 11 goals and 25 assists last season. • JANSONS spent last season with fellow freshman DOMINIC GARCIA with the Aston Rebels, where he led all NAHL defensemen in goals scored with 19 -- 11 of them on the power-play.

THE LONE WOLF

• Redshirt senior DAVID NORRIS resides as the only senior on this year’s Sun Devil

roster, and the last player to have played any time as a member of the ACHA team. (Transfer GAGE HOUGH is a graduate student from UMass-Lowell) • At the end of 2014, NORRIS transferred from American International College in the NCAA for a change of scenery and to join his brother, LIAM, on the Devils’ roster. Never knowing whether he would play NCAA hockey, NORRIS scored nine goals and nine assists in nine games in that final season of ACHA -- the same time when ASU found out they would move to the NCAA. • Due to NCAA rules, NORRIS redshirted the inaugural NCAA season at ASU and returned last year for his first year back in college hockey. He scored three goals and nine assists before suffering an injury in the second game against Denver on Jan. 7. • NORRIS is a mere 24 days older than HOUGH.

DRAFTED DEVIL

• Sophomore JOEY DACCORD is now the only Sun Devil to have been drafted in the

NHL after the departure of Robbie Baillargeon and Wade Murphy. • DACCORD was drafted prior to wearing the Maroon & Gold, but is officially the

first drafted player in Sun Devil Division I history as he was commited to ASU. DACCORD went 199th overall in the 7th round of the 2015 NHL Draft to the Ottawa Senators. • Over the summer, sophomores BRINSON PASICHNUK, TYLER BUSCH and JAKOB STRIDSBERG attended NHL Development Camps, including the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs, respectively.

POWERING UP

Coach Powers enters the 2017-18 season wrapping up a decade on the Sun

Devil Coaching Staff and his third as Head Coach of ASU’s NCAA Division I Hockey program. During the 2016-17 campaign, Powers led the Devils to double-digit victories at 10-19-3, doubling his victories year-to-year. In the inaugural NCAA season, ASU finished 10-23-5 in 2015 and 5-22-2 in NCAA play under Powers. During the 2013-14 season, Coach Powers helped guide the Sun Devils to their firstever ACHA Division I National Championship. He holds a 184-72-18 career record at ASU. Along with assistant coaches Alex Hicks and Mike Field, the Sun Devils welcomed their first top-10 recruiting class in just their third season as an NCAA program. According to NeutralZone.net, ASU’s 2017 recruiting class ranked 9th in Division I, ahead of historic programs like Boston College, Minnesota-Duluth, Harvard, Notre Dame and UMass-Lowell. Himself a Sun Devil, Powers graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism in 1999 and was inducted into the ASU Hockey Player Hall of Fame in in 2009. Collegiately, Greg was a three-time ACHA Division I All-American Goaltender while playing for the Sun Devils under the tutelage of Hall of Fame Head Coach Gene Hammett. The Sun Devils qualified for three national championships during Powers’ four-season collegiate career, and he was named Team MVP for the 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 seasons.
