Middle School Licensing Program A Collaboration by the VT-HEC and Castleton University The VT-HEC is partnering with Castleton University to offer the 4 courses needed for obtaining a Middle School License through the VT AOE transcript review process. The courses are a combination of on-line and face to face held at the downtown Rutland offices of Castleton University. These courses are designed to teach well researched brain-based strategies and tools that will enable teachers and teams to provide learning environments that will grow students’ intellectual capacities, develop their leadership skills and voice, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. The first course will be Nature and Needs of Adolescent Development. This course is designed to teach well researched skills, strategies, and tools, that will enable teachers to provide safe learning environments that will nurture students’ intellectual capacities, develop their leadership skills and voice, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Course Topics  Understanding the intellectual, social, emotional and physical developmental needs of adolescence  Learning how to differentiate instruction using brain-based research  Developing students’ leadership capabilities and voice  Creating a safe, self-directed learning environment  Engaging students in the community  Shaping curriculum based on student needs and interests Nature and Needs of Adolescent Development will be taught by Susie Girardin. Susie is a middle grades specialist who has worked in middle schools and with middle school teachers for 40 years. Course Sequence: •
