Fabric Calculations and Cutting Determine the finished size of your boxed cushion and calculate required yardage using the chart below. Consider fabric width and pattern repeat when calculating yardage. For printed fabrics with one-way designs or large motifs, allow for extra yardage for any desired matching. (Tip: When calculating extra yardage for pattern matching, allow for one extra repeat per cushion.) Adjust yardage for multiple cushions. Cut the cushion pieces according to the chart. Cushion Components Cushion Top & Bottom Cut two pieces. Cushion Box Band – front & side bands Cut one piece. Cushion Box Band – back band with zipper Cut two pieces. Prepare the Box Band •

Insert the zipper into the back box band piece using a lapped insertion. Use your favorite method or follow the steps below. (Hint: A 1” seam allowance is used for adding durability.)

Machine baste the two back box band pieces together lengthwise, right sides together using a 1” seam allowance. Press the seam open.

Place the seamed band piece wrong side up, extending the right seam allowance free from the band. Place the opened zipper face down on this seam allowance, 1” up from the lower edge. Line up the zipper teeth next to the seamline. Machine baste the zipper tape in place using Zipper Foot #4.

Close the zipper. Turn the zipper face up, forming a fold in the seam allowance. Using Zipper Foot #4, stitch the fold to the zipper tape using a regular stitch length.

Turn the band over to the right side up. Smooth the band flat over the unstitched zipper tape. Using Zipper Foot with Guide #14, topstitch the unstitched zipper tape in place, stitching across the bottom, pivoting and continuing along the length of the zipper, and pivoting and stitching across the top of the zipper. The adjustable guide on Zipper Foot #14 rides in the seamline allowing for perfect topstitching every time! Remove the basting along the seamline. Press lightly.

True up the width of this zippered box band to measure the cushion height + 1”.

Stitch one end of this zippered box band piece to the remaining box band piece. Press the both seams away for the zippered edge.

Trim this continuous box band length to the circumference of the cushion top + 1”. Cut excess length off the non-zippered end. Stitch the open band ends right sides together, ½” seam allowance. Press both seams away from the zippered edge. Set aside.

Prepare the Fabric Covered Welt Cord •

Covered welt cording not only adds a decorative accent to boxed cushions, but also strengthens the seams.

Achieve professional results when covering and inserting welt cord with Bulky Overlock Foot #12. A groove in the sole of the foot readily accommodates the cording.

To cover the cording, wrap the bias strip snugly around the uncovered welt cord and place it under the bottom groove of Foot #12. The wrapped cord is contained within the groove. Machine baste in place with the needle position moved 3-4 steps to the right of center, creating a ½” seam allowance.

Attach the Fabric Covered Welt Cord to the Top and Bottom Pieces •

With the cushion top piece right side up, position the covered welt along the cushion edge, raw edges even.

Using Bulky Overlock Foot #12, machine baste the covered cording around the circumference of the cushion edges, using a needle position moved 3-4 steps to the right of center. Allow the cording to ride in the bottom groove of the foot. Pivot at the corners, clipping the piping seam allowances as needed.

Where the ends meet, trim cord filler from one end and overlap for a smooth connection.

Repeat the same process to attach welt cord to the cushion bottom piece.

Attach the Box Band to the Top and Bottom Pieces •

The zippered portion of the box band is centered across the back of the cushion with approximately 2” (finished) of the zippered portion of the band wrapping to both of the cushion sides. With right sides together, pin the box band piece to the top cushion piece, centering the zippered portion of the Box Band across the back of the top piece. Clip Box Band seam allowance at corner pivot points. Stitch the two pieces together, using Bulky Overlock Foot #12 with a needle position 2-3 steps to the right of center. The cording will ride in the bottom groove of the foot.

Cushion Bottom (underside)

On the unstitched edge of the box band, clip into the seam allowance opposite each of sewn corners, creating alignment points for attaching the bottom piece. Pin the box band to the bottom cushion piece, taking care to align top and bottom corners. Stitch as above.

Turn right side out. Set aside.

Optional Cushion Ties •

Cushion ties are stitched to the outside of the finished box cushion to help keep cushions securely in place.

Edgestitch Foot #10 makes quick work in making these ties. For each tie, with the wrong side up, press in a ½” seam allowance on both length-wise edges. Press in a ¼” seam allowance on the width-wise edges. Fold the strip in half width-wise, wrong sides together. Press in place. Using Edgestitch Foot #10, stitch around all four edges of the tie.

• •

Attach the finished tie to the box band at the back corners. Center the tie and stitch in place width-wise.

Prepare the Cushion Foam •

Measure the piece of foam to determine if trimming will be required. For a square or rectangular cushion, use a right angle ruler to square up the cushion. Trim to size. (Tip: An electric knife is the easiest way to cut foam over 1” in depth.)

Cut two pieces of Dacron upholstery batting, each piece large enough to cover one length of the foam piece and two sides.

Lightly spray all sides of the foam with a permanent spray adhesive and cover with upholstery batting. Trim batting as needed.

Insert the covered foam cushion into the finished cushion cover.

Enjoy with pride because you made it yourself!
