BACK FROM FLA: NJCU returns to northern baseball today as it opens a six-game homestand against a talented Neumann University squad. NJCU went 5-3 in Florida and very easily could have been 7-1 on the trip—twice losing by one run with the tying run on base on Friday against Framingham State. Among NJCU’s signature wins on the trip was a 10-1 rout of defending Little East Conference champion Rhode Island College. LAST MEETING: Last season, Neumann defeated NJCU, 7-4, in Aston, Pa. on March 25, 2011. Bill Pace had two runs and two RBIs and Derrek Etsell was 2-for2 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer. Brian Bustillo is the lone returning Gothic Knight to have played in that game. MARTUCCI HONORED: First-year shortstop Michael Martucci was named the NJAC Rookie Hitter of the Week yesterday. In the final six games of NJCU’s spring trip last week, he batted .462 (1226) with nine runs scored, five doubles, four RBIs and was 5-for-6 in steals, while posting a .481 on-base and .654 slugging percentage. He hit safely in five of six games and had a run scored in all six games. In NJCU’s come-from-behind win over Mount Saint Mary, he was a perfect 5-for5 with three doubles and two runs scored. WEN-ROD’S WEEK: Wendell Rodriguez had the most active week of his collegiate career, making four appearances, including two starts, and we won twice while notching his first career save and his sixth career complete game victory. He threw 229 pitches during the week and had a 2.04 ERA. NELLY TO THE HILL: Senior righty Nelson Maldonado makes his third start (fourth appearance of the season). He is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings with nine strikeouts, five walks and an opposing batting average of .212. He has allowed just 14 hits. He tossed a complete game four-hitter in NJCU’s 1-0 win over Daniel Webster on March 10.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION HOT KNIGHTS: Neumann enters today’s action riding a 10game winning streak—the longest active streak in the nation. After losing twice ro Ramapo on February 18 and once to Washington College, Neumann has posted some signature wins, including a road sweep of Virginia Wesleyan and a 4-3 win at then #3 ranked Kean on March 2. In its last game on Tuesday, March 13, Neumann edged #21 nationally ranked Misericordia, 5-4. NU RANKED: The Knights enter today’s game ranked No. 25 in Division III in the latest D3baseball.com poll announced this morning. Neumann also received votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top 30 Poll. TOP KNIGHTS: Starting pitcher Russ Gilliam leads the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) with a 4-0 record and owns a 1.00 ERA with 37 strikeouts versus six walks in 27.0 innings. Derrek Estell is one of five players with at least six extra base hits, including a league high four homers. He rides a nine-game hitting streak while Bill Pace and Kevin Flanigan have streaks of seven and six games, respectively. ***THE NCAA, ECAC, NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, STAFF AND SPECTATORS.
