The Episcopal Parish of the Church of The Mediator &

the Church of Our Redeemer September 2013

Come and hear The Rev. Chris Robinson speak about his recent trip to Israel! Wednesday evening, September 18 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall in McComb Wine and light appetizers will be served

From the Senior Warden Making Disciples is All About Relationships I am reading a book, Reclaiming the Great Commission, by Bishop Claude E. Payne and Hamilton Beazley. Bishop Payne was the Bishop of the Diocese of Texas; he is now retired. His vision of the church for our time calls for the church to send disciples to make disciples of the unchurched for Christ. In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) Jesus said to his disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.” (NJB) He believes that many mainline churches have forgotten the purpose of the church. They are in a Maintenance Model (taking care of their members) instead of a Missionary Model which focuses on sending disciples to make disciples of the unchurched. His vision calls for a return to the Missionary Model which the early church used, but makes it or updates it for the twenty-first century. Building relationships with the unchurched through service will allow them to see the community of believers making a difference. This book makes me a little uncomfortable, and I guess Bishop Payne sees our comfort in only taking care of our own in our church as a major reason for the decline and lack of interest in our church by the unchurched. This Missionary Model seems radical to most of us today, but was the focus of the early church. If we want to reach the unchurched, this book gives ideas for parishioners to think about and discuss. When I finish this book, I will be ready for discussion. Jack Seale Sr. Warden Financial News Dear Church Family,

Well, I’m guessing that July may have been the hardest month we’ve had thus far. Our income from pledges and plate offerings was down a bit to $10,214.47, and our expenses were $18,268.07 leaving us in the red $8,053.60. We have had some extra expenses such as $600 for Camp Bratton-Green; $1,000 for down payment on an organ for Magnolia; $3,327.70 for a copier; and $2,681.42 for the fence around the playground. Now that summer is over and everyone is back into a routine, I truly have faith that we will go back to the positive numbers again. I wouldn’t want Jesus to say the same thing to us that he said to Peter, “O, ye of little faith”. God is Good! Cindy

Centering Prayer Resumes The Centering Prayer group will resume their weekly meeting on Friday, September 6 th at 8:00 am, and generally lasts 40 to 45 minutes. We invite anyone, in the parish or not, to join us for this spiritual exercise. Centering Prayer is the practice of meditating silently, for about 20 minutes, sitting quietly in God's presence. It requires no special "skills" and can be used by anyone willing to give the time to deepen a relationship with God. Currently our group consists of five members who come as they can, and also continue this practice individually during the week, as they are able. We also consist of three different Christian denomination Come and join us if you are drawn to do so, or if you are simply curious. Or call Sally Johnson, 601-783-0508, or anyone else in the group, if you have any questions you'd like answered.

Honduras Mission Team Congratulations to Chip Leggett and Betsy Enochs for being chosen once again to be part of the Honduras Medical Mission team. They will leave on Saturday, February 15, 2014, and return Saturday, February 22. The team is offering a new opportunity for parishioners across the diocese to assist with the mission. Over the years the team has developed an affordable and sensible “family pack” approach for needs for routine ailments by creating standardized packages of normal household remedies to give to every family unit coming through the clinic. The team is asking parishioners to visit their local Dollar Tree, Everything’s a Dollar or similar store and purchase some of the items listed below. These stores sell appropriate size containers and the products can be purchased according to their budget and heart. Approximately 3,000 of every item will be given out so there is plenty of need. Some may want to buy $5 worth and others may feel led to purchase $500 worth. Again, the team will take all they can get. The deadline for bringing the items to the churches or to the Parish office is Sunday, September 29. Laurel team members will consolidate and pack for shipment to Honduras. Please contact Chip Leggett at 601-783-2361 if you have questions. Lastly, the team bids your prayers over the coming months as they undertake this task.
