Good and Angry

Overwhelmed

Be good and angry. Anger is a good thing. Jesus Himself got angry. God, in the Old Testament, was often stirred to anger. Most of our anger is sinful. It is often rooted in good, but turns into bad. For example:

Have you ever had one of those seasons of life that just overwhelms you? I have. I’m having one right now. The Youth Group is growing, my school work is calling, and even as I write this I’m wondering how my wife’s day is going. But what can we do when we feel overwhelmed? This week God showed me three principals from Proverbs 3:1-8 for overcoming overwhelming feelings.

◦ You’re angry because a friend didn’t return your call. Your anger is rooted in valuing the relationship. It turns bad when you say something nasty to her because she didn’t call back. ◦ You’re angry because your child refuses to obey. Your anger is rooted in taking your role as a parent seriously. It turns bad because you respond to your child with yelling and aggression. ◦ You’re angry because your neighbor’s dog leaves chocolate “treats” in your yard. Your anger is rooted in valuing property and law and order. It turns bad when you wish ill on the neighbor and his dog. ◦ You’re angry because the church didn’t do something you wanted. Your anger is rooted in caring about something. It turns bad when you get upset at the church for not meeting your demands. ◦ You’re angry because millions of babies are aborted every year. Your anger is rooted in valuing human life. It turns bad when you hate the mother. Be careful in your anger. Even when it stems from something good, it can morph into something bad. Watch your heart, feelings, words, and actions. Your Pastor,

Jason R. McNaughten

First, remember to trust God. In Proverbs 3:1-2 God’s word reminds us to trust Him by following His word. God grants us peace of mind and wisdom as we follow His word. The Hebrews understood this in a way we don’t. For them, it was enough to trust Him. We on the other hand want everything explained to us – how is God gonna do this? We don’t have to know to receive it. Second, from verses 3-4, know His word. How can we ever cultivate peace in our lives without His word? His word reminds us of His faithfulness. His word inspires us to change and ultimately His word grants us success in life through peace. Third, from verses 7-8 don’t be arrogant about your own ideas. True wisdom comes from reflecting on and knowing God’s word. Yet, His word cannot have an influence on us if we are not open to it. Humbling ourselves and saying we don’t have it all figured out is a huge step in coming out of an overwhelming season. This in turn helps us to fear God…and fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I pray God blesses you by reading His word. Youth Pastor,
