Packing the Spinnaker chute The Problem: The spinnaker doesn’t like being squeezed through a small opening in the front of the boat. If it doesn’t come down perfectly you can end up with it hooked over the side and jammed. You then have to hoist it and try to drop it again, all the time sailing past the leeward mark!
The Solution Easy to solve! You will need some damn good sticky tape, duck tape works well, and some old string can come in handy too. Step 1: If the bolts or metal ‘flaps’ in the spinnaker chute stick out a little too far and it’s possible to get the downhaul to jam in them, you’ll need to pack the bolts first. Get some old thing line and wrap it around the bolt end or underneath the flaps so that nothing can get stuck. Step 2: Get taping! You need to forget how much duck tape costs and just go nuts! Do not underestimate how a minor part can get your spinnaker stuck or worse rip it on the way in and out.
