Weekly Summary • Retail 2017 Started With a QB Sneak. Despite a milder feel, cold weather merchandise got a late season boost as the northern and eastern U.S. comped a very warm week LY. The coldest departures vs. LY were felt in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest, helping to clear remaining winter goods. • A Touchdown for Spring in the Southwest. Temperatures across the Southwest and South Central regions warmed above both normal and LY, driving early spring sales. Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, and San Francisco were the only major U.S. markets to trend warmer vs. LY. • Snow Stiff Armed to the North. Overall, it was the driest week 1 since 2009, supporting retail and restaurant traffic. Exceptions included late week rain in California, light snow across the Northern Tier, and moderate snow in higher elevations of the Northwest and eastern Great Lakes. Overall, the U.S. had its least February week 1 snow since 2012. • Canada Outkicked Its Coverage. All major Canadian cities trended colder vs. LY, with coldest anomalies focused in the East. Although light snow fell along the border, Canada was driest for the week since 2010 with its least snow since 2012. The cold and dry conditions were ideal for retailers looking to move winter goods. • Last year, in the U.S. it was the warmest February week 1 since 2008, driven by the East. Weekly Summary • ‘Hello’ Spring. A spring feel was in the air for much of the country, which had its warmest 2nd week of February in 55+ years. The West South Central and Mountain regions came in at number one and two on the charts for warmth in the last 55+ years. Texas scored the most hits as 90 degree readings were recorded all the way up to the Oklahoma Panhandle. • No ‘Chance’ for Spring in the West. Temperatures stayed a bit colder than normal along the West Coast with the Pacific region falling well short of LY and coldest since 2013. Los Angeles, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco were the only major U.S. markets to trend colder vs. LY. • ‘Stressed Out’ by Snow. Nationally, precipitation was the most for February week 2 since 2003. A Nor’easter brought 6 to 10 inches of snow from interior Pennsylvania to the NYC metro area and up to 18 inches of snow from Long Island to New England. Boston had its most snow since the infamous 2015 blizzards. The Northwest also experienced excessive rain and mountain snow, leading to mudslides and heavy flooding in California. • Canada: ‘Lemonade’ Optional. Most eastern Canadian markets trended warmest since 2013, while western markets were colder vs. LY. Snow was well distributed as Vancouver, Calgary, and Quebec City all had top 4 snowfalls for the 2nd week of February. • Last year, temperatures in the U.S. were near normal for the week.
