Units of study for this month… Reader’s Workshop: We are working on a nonfiction unit about Ocean Animals. This unit focuses on nonfiction texts. Students are learning about the nonfiction text features that are commonly found in information books. Students are also working on identifying the main topic and details in a text, making connections between texts on the same topic, drawing conclusions and identifying the author’s purpose. Standards: RI K. 1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details RI K.2 With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text RI K.3 With prompting and support, describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. RI K.8 With prompting and support, identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text Writer’s Workshop: We are working on writing informational pieces about Ocean Animals. This unit focuses on informational writing. Students are learning about topics to become experts and will be writing informational pieces using content specific vocabulary, complete sentences and accurate drawings/representations of the topic. Standards: WK.2 Using a combination of drawing, dictating and writing, to compose informative/ explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. W K.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects Math K1-K2: We will begin work on Money- recognizing, understanding coins and their value. We will be working on word problems related to money and using different combinations of coins to make and deconstruct numbers. Standards: KCC2. I can count starting with any number KCC3. I can write the numbers from 0 to 20 and write the numeral for the number of objects I counted KOA3. I can break apart numbers into pairs in many ways Math K3-K4: We will be working on a cumulative review of topics covered throughout the year. This will include Numbers to 20, Addition and Subtraction and multi step word problems! Standards: KCC2. I can count starting with any number KCC3. I can write the numbers from 0 to 20 and write the numeral for the number of objects I counted KOA3. I can break apart numbers into pairs in many ways Science: Unit 3- Animals: Our kindergarten class is working on a science unit on animals. You can help your child learn about animals by taking walks in your neighborhood to look for animals and by talking about animals in and around your home—everything from pets to insects. We will be discussing differences and similarities in the structures and behaviors of the animals we investigate and starting to develop the important attitudes of respect for life and a sense of responsibility for living organisms.
