This week we will read excerpts of the Bible that make reference to the Holy Spirit. Although the Spirit is not limited to any kind of time and space continuum, for our purposes we will look at the presence of the Spirit from the creation of the world through the Christ Followers in the early church. The Spirit first shows up in the Bible at the time of the world’s creation. The Spirit is then breathed into people during the formation of the first man and woman. Later the Spirit temporarily comes upon people seemingly at God’s choosing. The prophets of the Old Testament declared that they were speaking from the power of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus comes to earth, he is indwelled directly with the Holy Spirit all the time. Later, on the Day of Pentecost, all the new believers present were indwelled directly with the Holy Spirit in a dramatic way. Paul then writes to the early churches telling them that each Christ Follower has the Holy Spirit indwelling in their lives. Today, the Holy Spirit is the way God chooses to actually live inside each follower of Jesus. Enjoy this week’s readings as you trace the presence of the Spirit throughout the pages of the Bible.
DAY 1
The Old Testament Books of the Bible were originally written in Hebrew. The Hebrew word for spirit is “ru’ach” which is also translated as breath, wind and mind; one word translated in four different ways. The Holy Spirit has no beginning or end and was present at the creation of the world. READ Genesis 1-2 Watch for the following references to the Holy Spirit: • Genesis 1:2 says that “the Spirit of God” was hovering over the waters. • Genesis 2:7, says God “breathed” into man; that is he literally “put his Spirit” into their nostrils. • Genesis 1:26 the plural language of “us” is used suggesting God and Spirit together.

DAY 2
In the Old Testament, the idea of the Spirit residing in a human was not seen as a permanent thing but a temporary and transient thing. Before Moses died he passed the Spirit on to Joshua by the laying on of hands. Also, in 1 Samuel the Spirit is said to have left Saul, but seemed to indwell David. READ Numbers 27: 12-22 Deuteronomy 34 1 Samuel 16:14-23
DAY 3
The Old Testament Prophet Isaiah experienced the Holy Spirit. When he spoke, he prefaced his words by first saying “the Spirit of the Lord is on me.” When Jesus came to earth he was indwelled with the Holy Sprit. Notice that Jesus quotes Isaiah saying “the Spirit of the Lord is on me.” READ Isaiah 61 Luke 4
DAY 4
“I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD.“ Ezekiel 39:29. Ezekiel, an Old Testament priest, shares a prophecy concerning the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He shares that there would come a time when God would not turn His back on His people and He would live with them and pour out His Spirit on them! READ Acts 1 and 2
DAY 5
Excerpts from letters written by Paul to the early churches in Rome and Ephesus, include explanations of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling in the individual lives of the believers in the early church and also in our lives today. READ Romans 8 Ephesians 1
