THE SERIES: Rutgers-Newark leads the all-time series, 41-21, having won the last five meetings. LAST MEETING: November 28, 2012 in Newark, NJ. R-N won, 6762. Ashley Vazquez scored a career high 22 points, including four threepointers and NJCU had a number of opportunities to claim a victory in the final minutes of play before R-N hung on. Gabrielle Rivera added nine points and four assists. Jade Howard scored 20 points for the Raiders and had seven rebounds. Jewell Palmer finished with 13 points and Jasmine Daniels had 10 rebounds and eight points. LAST TIME OUT: On Monday, NJCU shot 58.1 percent in the first half (18-31) to a claim a nine-point lead and maintained that advantage in the second period as the Gothic Knights snapped a nine-game losing streak with a decisive 73-60 non-conference road victory over the College of New Rochelle. Ashley Vazquez led the Gothic Knights with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting and added five assists and five steals. Kiana Briggs added a career best of 14 points, with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Deseree Johnson tallied eight points, six rebounds and five steals while Jade Medley supplied seven points, four steals and three blocks. STILL LEADING: Alnisa Hernaiz still leads the conference in rebounding with 10.3 boards per game. She ranks 36th nationally in rebounding and 63rd with six double-doubles.

LAST TIME OUT: Rutgers-Newark received a doubledouble from Jade Howard, but was unable to keep up with unbeaten Montclair State as the visiting Red Hawks cruised to a 68-48 win on January 19. Howard finished with 12 rebounds and 10 points for the Scarlet Raiders while ShaQuanna Marshall chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. Also for R-N, Sharee Gorden tallied 11 points and five rebounds. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak. SIMMONS AWARDED: Rookie Maria Simmons was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season and the second week in a row on January 21. She gets the game and she wants to be successful at every avenue of the game. She pushes this team and is our engine. Where she goes is where we are going to go. She doesn’t let anyone slack off and she gets that hard work means success.” • Academics: Majoring in Professional Security Studies with a minor in Sociology. She intends to become a federal marshall. • Basketball Career: A two-year co-captain (2010-11 and 2012-13), she has played 82 games in four seasons with 53 starts. A strong defensive player, she has contributed 367 rebounds (149 offensive, 218 defensive) for a 4.5 per game average while chipping in 210 points, 94 assists and 73 steals. She has averaged nearly 20 minutes per game for her career (1635, 19.9). This year she has played in 18 games with 17 starts, averaging 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 points. • Soccer: Chernez is a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter for the women’s soccer team from 2009-11, which made three consecutive post-season appearances. She did not play in 2012 but plans to return to the pitch in Fall 2013. NJCU won 41 games in three years with her on the pitch as she logged 2676 minutes, primarily as a defender. • High School: She was a three-sport athlete for the Soaring Eagles in soccer, basketball, and softball, playing four years on the varsity level in soccer and basketball and three years with softball. She earned SecondTeam and Honorable Mention All-County honors during her prep soccer career, and achieved the same honors in basketball.
