Changing of The Guard We couldn’t begin to list all the great changes Dan has made in his years as President of Central Indiana SPE and it’s members. Dan’s hardwork, dedication and welliness to go the extra mile has made Central Indiana Chapter one of the best. Although he has passed the torch on to Perry Harwood of PolyOne, Dan will still be involved by taking on the duites of Advertising Chair. I would ask members to send Dan a quick e -mail to take him for the years of dedication to Central Indiana SPE.

A Final Message from Dan Stratton Outgoing President…. September, 2003 As I reflect back on my last 3 years as President of this section I am very proud of what we have accomplished on many fronts. Initially, my game plan was to rebuild and re-energize this section by recruiting members to the board and establishing an agenda that included strong technical programs that informed as well as fun activities that entertained. With the help of a fantastic group of board members we put together a host of very strong technical programs and had some unique outings as well. One of my personal favorites was our September meeting & tour of the Union Federal NFL Colts Complex that drew a record attendance. It was no doubt our most expensive meeting ever held but was worth every penny! Despite the tough economic environment the plastics industry has faced, our membership has stabilized and since the beginning of this year has actually increased 7%. When company management promotes SPE we all come out ahead of the game. I would also like to thank all the board members and advisors who contributed to the success of our organization- Perry Harwood, David Burcham, Chuck Okenfuss, John Anderson, John Mills, Ken Hahn, Lindsey Hahn, Tom Krol, Al Arduini, Eric Berg, Rochelle Lemieux, Gene Nolen, Troy Nix, Bob Grzegorek, Mike Vincent, Chris Kleck. These are the people who have volunteered their time to make this section one of the finest around. I am highly confident that our new President, Perry Harwood will lead this section to new heights and set new standards for other sections to model. Perry has the drive and enthusiasm to set an agenda for all of us to follow. As many of you know I have made a career change into residential real estate but plan on staying on the board in some capacity. Once again, it has been a great privilege to serve you and look forward to seeing you at future SPE meetings! Thanks,
Dan

A MESSAGE FROM PERRY HARWOOD-PRESIDENT… President’s MessageDear Central Indiana Section Members and Friends, Welcome to your end of summer issue. It is hard to believe that September is already here! Summer will soon be behind us and as we say goodbye to it and make the transition into fall we are also experiencing a transition within the Central Indiana SPE board. I would like to personally thank Dan Stratton for all of his guidance and involvement as the SPE President for the last 3 years. He has been an excellent SPE President and a great role model for our entire team. Thankfully, Dan will still be involved on the board, heading up the Advertising Chair. As always, thank you for your devotion to this section and I look forward to working with you! With that being said, I would really like to maintain the momentum that Dan has helped to create. The great SPE Board members have really been influential in our ability to reach our goals as a section. Our newest additions to the board, Secretary Sean Hodge and Membership Chairperson, Rochelle Lemieux, are making a smooth transition into their positions and have brought some great ideas with them. As a board we are all busy with managing finances and aggressively pursuing money-saving ideas as well as revenue-generating events. I would like to briefly review this past year’s events that helped us to reach our financial goals and helped to promote our section. Starting with the Mini-Tec held at the Plastics Encounter back in the fall of last year, this was a huge success and has us considering future programs similar to it. Then of course there was the tour for the entire family at the NCAA Hall of Champions. Then in April, Dupont held a highly educational program on Advanced Technologies regarding the plastics industry and in May, 3-D Systems hosted a presentation on high-speed, production-quality tooling inserts for molded and steel parts. Then there was another great program from Mold Flow and of course, my personal favorite, the Annual SPE Golf Outing. It was a great time and for the most part, the rain stayed away! Kudos to David Burcham and the rest of the Golf Committee, which has already begun to make plans for next years outing! If you were unable to attend any of these events, I assure you that they were fun, very educational and well worth the time spent. I would like to thank everyone that hosted these events and participated in them. As the new president, my goals are clear. It’s important to continue to grow our membership base, to listen to our members, provide them with interesting, industry related, quality programs and to create positive challenges. I won’t bore you with how I plan to execute each of these goals, but one in particular should be addressed: the challenges.
Central Indiana Section SPE

My first challenge is to our board members. We are all very busy in our every day life and jobs, however, I’d ask that each of you give serious thought to what SPE Section challenge you would like to “attack” next. By staying where we a re we will never grow. I want you to think of how David Burcham decided to take on the challenge of newsletter editor and how he has taken a serious step in making our section one of the very first to have not only a paperless newsletter but also our very own website! This is extremely motivating to me and I hope to all of you! What can you do in your position to “remold” it into something better? My next challenge is to ALL of our members. You may not be aware of the time and efforts that your board has put into your section each year, but you are able to see the results. My challenge is for YOU to become more involved with your section and it’s activities. Whether that is volunteering on the board or just becoming a regular attendant at our technical meetings, there are many ways to make this section, “YOUR SECTION”. I would be more than happy to talk with you if you’re interested in joining the board, want information on future meetings, or just have questions or comments. In closing, I just want to say that it is my privilege to serve as President of the Central Indiana Section. I am also very fortunate to have a terrific and supportive group of individuals helping me. Thanks to everyone. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Minutes From Board Meeting on September 8 th, 2003 @ Max & Erma’s 11:30 AM Thanks to everyone that took the time out to make the meeting today. I feel it was extremely productive. Here are the main points that I was able to take from it- please take the time to review and respond as requested: Council Info 1. We voted unanimously 10-0 that we did not support the proposed 2004 SPE budget. 2. We would like to know what opportunity we have to obtain the entire Central Indiana SPE monies so that we can have direct access for Scholarships, Student sponsorships for Antec in Chicago, and directly paying a part-time person (TBD) to manage membership growth, company sponsorships, web page/newsletter updates and program advertising. 3. Dan will be contacting a lawyer for consultation on our rights as a section. 4. I will be drafting a brief letter stating that our section would be willing to forego our 2004 rebate, however, National will have to show a more realistic budget for 2004 and a strong plan to create positive revenue for the 2005 year. All members will be asked to review and reply back to me with the word "approved" or "disapprove" before Alan will take this to the council meeting on the 20th. 5. As a group we all agree that National has been running lean and trying to invest in Marketing are all very important, however, we also feel that National needs to live more within their means. Can meetings be held closer to National to reduce travel and hotel expenses, etc.. Part-Time Person Question 1. I would ask for any clear concise expectations of what a part-time person would be required to do for our section, how many hours/month you would think would be sufficient and what reasonable amount of money we should be paying for their services.. Then we will send David on a search to find the right person. Scholarship Info 1. We have agreed to sponsor the travel, lodging, and food related cost up to a total amount of $1000 for 3 Purdue students to present their Design related papers at the next Antec in Chicago. John Anderson will be letting us know whom he will be suggesting. 2. I will be contacting all of the Indiana SPE sections in the attempt to get some contributions towards high school essay winners for the state of Indiana. We will be attempting to receive enough of a contribution to provide a minimum amount of $500 for the winning essay and $500 to be used by the winning student's teacher towards school related

supplies. I will be letting each of you know the response from the other sections and we will need to vote soon on how to proceed. 3. Upon approval of the high school scholarship, Ray will be in charge of contacting the Indiana high school Guidance Counselors on our award. Upcoming meeting 1. Tentatively scheduled for October 16th, at 5:30 p.m. on Purdue University's School of Technology. The program will be a in-depth discussion and explanation of how to interpret and make sense of Material Property Data Sheets and a tour of the facilities Technology equipment. John will be providing David with the specifics of the tour as well as directions and the availability of parking permits for visitors. 2. John will be in charge of having pizza and pop available for the presentation (funded by GE?). Ken please check with Kevin to see if he would be willing to sponsor us a minimum $100 for this. November's Meeting 1. Tentatively scheduled for November 20th at Jonathon Byrd's Cafeteria at 4:30 p.m. The program we would like to do is regarding Plating and Alan has a contact at Abright (sp) that he will get to Ken so that we can get this one nailed down. Future Prospective Tours Some ideas that were thrown around were: Chrysler's Transmission facility Suburu Isuzu Plant (already been done, but may be worth doing again) Tour of Great Lakes Chemicals in West Lafayette Anyone have any contacts at either of these facilities that could find out if we could do it? Thanks again for the time that you took out today. It was truly appreciated! Have a great day! Perry
