Information about Veterans Benefits Available to Senior Veterans and Their Surviving Spouses Pension (Aid and Attendance) Roughly 1 out of 4 seniors in the U.S. could qualify for the aid and attendance benefit under the right conditions. That's how many war veterans or their surviving spouses there are. Only about 5% of U.S. seniors are actually receiving this benefit. It can pay up to $2,054/month for a couple, $1,732/month for a single veteran and $1,113 for a single surviving spouse. More about the Aid & Attendance Benefit (Contact Ray for a list of Veteran Service Officers)) State Veterans Nursing Homes State veterans homes are a joint venture between state veterans departments and VA. Subsidies come from the state, VA and other sources. The majority of state homes are nursing homes for veterans but some homes may also provide assisted living and other care. Most states have anywhere from 2 to 5 or more homes. Typically there is a waiting list to get in.

From the Director, Here at the Frederica Senior Center we strive to face aging with dignity and challenge ourselves along the way. We create opportunities for patrons to actively participate, acknowledge their history and look for paths leading to enhanced self-esteem. It is your feedback that sparks the programs and your choices that define us. You already knew the process of aging would not be easy but what you might not have known is that you could have an opinion and that someone sincerely cared. The dedicated staff at the Frederica Senior Center does care, and has continued to develop programs you’ve suggested. We appreciate each and every one of our members. Sincerely; Renee

OUTREACH CORNER By Renee Hoffman Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) The Delaware Energy Assistance Program (DEAP) is a federally funded program for low-income families that need help in meeting their costs of home energy. The Division of State Service Centers (DSSC) administers this program on a contractual basis with Catholic Charities, Inc. Funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), under the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). DEAP services provide assistance to income eligible families to help them meet their home energy needs. Income eligibility is defined as 200% of the federal poverty level. (As a reference, please see the Division of Social Services' Income Eligibility tables.) DEAP has several components which include:

Fuel Assistance: Help with home energy bills from the period of October 1 - March 31. This includes grants to income eligible households to help pay for home heating, which includes electricity, natural gas, kerosene, propane, coal, or wood. Grants are made to both homeowners and renters.

Crisis Assistance: This component helps households in crisis during the winter months and may be in the form of a supplemental grant to their fuel assistance benefit. In addition to being income eligible, households must show they are experiencing a crisis (i.e., shut-off notice, out of fuel, no money to pay for fuel).

Summer Cooling Assistance Program (SCAP): This program operates during the months of June -August and helps pay for electricity to cool homes with air conditioning during the hot, humid summer months. In addition to receiving a grant to offset the high costs of electricity to air condition a home, some populations may be eligible to receive a room sized air conditioning unit.

It is important to call Catholic Charities to find out where and how to apply for assistance. 5 Steps To Protect Against Extreme Heat’s Effects On Seniors Here are five tips to help seniors stay safe in hot weather: 1. If possible seek an air-conditioned environment. If you do not have air-conditioning at home, visit an air-conditioned shopping mall, restaurant or library. During extreme heat warnings, cities often set up cooling centers for the public to escape the heat. If you cannot leave your home, take a cool shower or place cool towels around pulse points such as the neck and armpits. 2. Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages without too much sugar. When the body sweats, it loses vital salts and minerals, so grab a sports drink or a Pedialyte. If your liquid intake is limited, eat cold fruits that contain high amounts of water like apples, watermelon and cantaloupe. 3. Stay out of the sun during the warmest parts of the day—usually between 10 or 11 am and 3 or 4 pm—and wear weather appropriate clothing that is loose fitting with light fabrics. 4. Use a buddy system. Ask a friend or relative to call and check on you twice a day. If you know someone 60 or older, call to check on them twice a day. 5. Hire a caregiver from a reputable agency that specializes in in-home senior care and who is trained in senior safety. They can provide care on an hourly or live-in basis, depending on the senior’s needs.

Membership Guidelines The Frederica Senior Center s mission is to guide Delaware’s senior into a brighter future. The Center is where seniors and or persons with disabilities join together for services, activities, socialization and nutritious home cooked meals. Programs are designed to enhance our seniors dignity, support their independence and encourage involvement in and with the Center and their local community. This Membership Guidelines Booklet has been developed to enhance the experience of your participation in the Center Activities and programs. It is the Centers priority to provide a safe, pleasant, positive, comfortable, enjoyable environment to our members. The Center recognizes that some behaviors may distract and disrupt for the enjoyment of the Center. That is why the following guidelines have been set up by the Board of Directors and Staff Members in order to address any instances that may occur and disrupt the daily routine and experience at the Center. We all ask that you carefully read this booklet to become familiar with these guidelines in order to know what is expected from each and every member of the Frederica Senior Center. 1. Membership is limited by the resources of the Center to individuals who are self mobile, with or without assistance devices such as wheelchairs or walkers, independent, capable of appropriate decision making, self toileting and have adequate appearance and hygiene to participate in daily activities. If not independent self mobile members may attend with a personal assistant. 2. As a member we ask that you promote goodwill. No member shall mistreat, either verbally or physically, any other member or staff. Mistreatment includes sexual, racial or otherwise harassing comments. Violence of any kind will not be tolerated and shall result in immediate dismissal from the Center, and membership will be revoked immediately. 3. Members are asked to encourage diversity. Isolation of members based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, and or physical or mental disability shall not be tolerated. 4. The use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted on or in Center property. 5. The rooms and equipment in the Center are for the use of the entire membership and are never for the exclusive use of any one member. Members are expected to respect and maintain the facility and equipment they use. Members may be liable for purposeful damage or destruction of any Center property. 6. Members are not to use any vulgar or profane language at any time. 7. If at any time a member has a problem of some kind, whether it be with another member, staff member, a program or procedure in the Center, that member should report their concern to the Executive Director or Staff Member. No member has the right to approach a guest or group of guests to voice their complaint. Complaining among other members will not get the situation resolved but will only bring disharmony into the Center. 8. Any criminal act committed by a member will result in immediate dismissal. 9. Inoculations must not be done in public areas, such as dining room, lobby or kitchen. The purpose of these guidelines is to allow everyone to richly enjoy their visit to the Center every time they are here. It is up to each individual member to do their part in order to achieve this goal.
