National Youth Science Day, 2016 On October 5, 2016, youth from 4‑H clubs, groups, and school programs across the country will participate in Drone Discovery, the 4‑H National Youth Science Day 2016 Engineering Design Challenge. Drone Discovery simulates the experience of working with a real drone by providing a hands-on educational challenge that teaches youth about the basics of flight, remote sensing, and real-world uses of drones. The comprehensive kit is ideally suited for a maximum group size of 10 youth, ages 8–14. If your club or group is interested in participating in this project, kits can be ordered through the 4-H Mall (http://www.4hmall.org/Product/national-day/2016-national -youth-science-day-kit). If you need advisement or help with this activity, please contact Tara Defendorf-Kuba at [email protected]. If you take on this project, we’d love to see photos! They can be sent to Tara, as well!

Scholarship Winners! Congratulations to Clara W. and Alllyson W.! Clara (pictured left, middle) was the recipient of the Sandra Lomker 4-H Educational Scholarship, which helps offset the costs associated with 4-H summer camp. Clara attended Camp Wyomoco this past summer and had a fantastic time! Allyson, pictured below with her dog, Rocket, received the Norman V. Ryan Scholarship for all she has accomplished in 4-H and the community. Allyson is a freshman at Cornell University this year and hopes to pursue a career in Agricultural Sciences and Viticulture. Congratulations to both young women for their hard work and dedication!

Seeking Volunteers! The new 4-H year begins on October 1st, and we’re busy planning exciting activities and projects. We’d love to start some new clubs in our county to allow more youth the chance to experience all that 4-H has to offer. Do you or does someone you know have a hobby or career about which you feel particularly passionate? Maybe it’s photography, model rocketry, or building robots? Gardening, cooking, or taking care of the environment? 4-H uses these interest areas as vehicles to help youth develop important life skills! Let’s consider an example. Perhaps your passion is photography. Not only can you teach youth an art that they can enjoy in their current and future lives, but at the same time you can use photography to help youth develop into resourceful, competent, caring adults! Youth can...

Build confidence, self-esteem, and competence by speaking about photography and

demonstrating photographic skills during a public presentation.

Learn time– and project management and the importance of quality workmanship while showcasing their art during an open house at a church or local café.

Make a difference in their community by donating their photos to a nursing home or museum.

Again, any hobby about which a child can feel passionate is the perfect vehicle to teach kids the skills they need to become successful, contributing adults. For more information about volunteering, please contact Kristie Taylor-Edwards, 4-H Administrative Assistant ([email protected]).

Career Ex Recap! This past June, Shaylee P. (pictured right), a Monroe County 4-Her, participated in Career Ex at Cornell University. Career Ex is a 3-day event for youth—held on the Cornell University Campus—whose purpose is to provide youth with exposure to academic fields and career exploration, to develop leadership skills, to provide hands-on experience in a college setting, and to introduce young adults to Cornell University. Here’s what Shaylee had to say about her experience: “Participating in the 4-H Career Explorations at Cornell was a wonderful experience. I was able to stay in the dorms and tour the campus, which was beautiful. I also met many new people who I am able to call my friends, some of whom I talk to every day. I learned so much about the class I took, which was on astronomy, including all the different careers offered in that field. I would definitely go again and plan on going next year.” If you’re a student entering Grade 8 or above in the fall, consider attending Career Ex next year. It’s a great introduction to campus life!

Monroe County 4-H Dog Show The Monroe County 4-H Dog Show was held on August 5th at the Monroe County Fair in Northampton Park. The day was hot, but the kids and their dogs did a marvelous job showing off all the hard work they put in this past year. The 4-Hers trained their dogs in six different disciplines (including the tricks and costumes categories), and they excelled in every one! Getting a dog to wear a costume is a feat in and of itself! Below are several photos from the show.
