HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD Northwestern leads 6-3

THE NORTHWESTERN FILE

The Eagles enter Saturday with a 5-2 overall record and 5-1 mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. UNW dropped a hardfought contest to St. Scholastica last week, falling to the visiting Saints 13-7. Northwestern and Westminster sit tied for second in the league standings with a 5-1 conference record.

A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT

Westminster makes the trip north from Fulton, Mo., with a 5-2 overall record. The Blue Jays lost their season opener to Southwestern Assemblies and dropped their Oct. 3 game with Crown, 29-21. Westminster most recently defeated Martin Luther 61-7 last weekend on Homecoming in Fulton.

DOMINANT DEFENSE

The Eagles defense continues to be a bright spot this fall, as the unit most recently held St. Scholastica to a season-low 13 points last week. UNW ranks seventh nationally in total defense, as the Eagles are surrendering an average of just 226.3 yards per game.

OUTSTANDING OFFENSE

Northwestern is averaging better than 365 yards of total offense per game and putting up more than 30 points per contest. Grant Schoen’s 164.9 passing yards per game ranks second in the conference, while Caleb Couwenhoven is tied for third in the UMAC with his average of 59 receiving yards per game. In the last two seasons at home, UNW is outscoring its opponents 274-117.

FIRST-EVER MEETING October 28, 2005 Northwestern 27, Westminster 7

LAST MEETING October 25, 2014 Northwestern 13, Westminster24

BRILLIANT BEN

Junior Ben Greener played a big part in UNW’s defensive effort last week that limited Scholastica to a season-low 13 points, as the linebacker was in on a season-high 15 tackles. Greener leads the Northwestern defense this season with 59 stops.

PETKAU CAN PUNT

Senior Daniel Petkau had a banner day against the Saints and was recognized for his efforts. The UNW punter landed a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week for his outstanding performance. In addition, he was named the UMAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Petkau averaged 45.2 yards per punt, dropped four punts inside the 20-yard line and boomed a pair of 50-plus yard punts.

In addition, Northwestern is averaging 196.4 yards per game on the ground and better than four yards per carry. UNW has had an individual go over 100 yards on the ground in a game on four occasions this fall.

EAGLES UPDATE News and notes from Northwestern Athletics The University of Northwestern volleyball team had a strong showing at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament, finishing the weekend 3-1. The Eagles topped UW-River Falls, UW-Platteville and Buena Vista before having their 14-game win streak snapped by UW-Eau Claire in the weekend finale. Lindsey Peterson and Shanay Gonder were named to the All-Tournament Team for their weekend efforts. The UNW football team battled St. Scholastica for all 60 minutes Saturday, but came up short against the rival Saints, 13-7. Chris Simon-Wallace scored on a 3-yard touchdown plunge in his 2015 debut. Ben Greener recorded 15 tackles, while Daniel Petkau shined on special teams, averaging 45.2 yards per punt in five attempts. Petkau pinned four punts inside the 20-yard line and had two land inside the five, while also booting a pair of 50-plus yard punts. The UNW cross country teams had another strong weekend of competition, competing at the Crown Invite and UW-Oshkosh AAE Invite. Wil Maki (27:42) and Jackson Peterson (27:45) turned in strong performances competing against the top talent in Division III at the UW-Oshkosh AAE Invite. Peterson’s time was a new personal-best for the UNW sophomore. At the Crown Invite, Alyssa Arends (25:52) led the women to a fifthplace finish, while Garrett Crown (28:57) helped the Eagles to a seventh-place finish on the men’s side. The UNW men’s soccer team bounced back from a 4-0 loss to St. Olaf earlier in the week to defeat Ripon 2-1 Thursday night in Ripon, Wis. Ethan Hart and Matthew McCann both found the back of the net for the Eagles. The women’s soccer team was idle.

Notes from last year’s Northwestern - Westminster game FULTON, Mo. – The nearly 500 mile return trip home will seem a bit longer after the University of Northwestern’s 24-13 loss to Westminster College (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles, who trailed 17-7 at halftime, came within four points of the home team before a pair of UNW turnovers and a Blue Jays touchdown in the fourth quarter handed Northwestern its second loss of the 2014 season. Josh Sinnen (Waconia, Minn./ Waconia)’s 13-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter put the Eagles on the scoreboard first, capping off a 10-play drive. Westminster answered with a field goal and two touchdowns, taking what would be a lead for good on a 47-yard run by Latif Adams and a fiveyard TD pass from Joe Plassmeyer to Mike Washington. Statistics-wise, the first half was colored in blue as Westminster owned a 105-78 advantage in rushing and a 147-30 buffer in passing. While the Eagles improved on those numbers in the second half, UNW struggled to maintain possession of the football when it mattered most. Ben Lyons (North Olmstead, Ohio/ Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy) hit a pair of field goals to bring Northwestern closer at 1713, but three of the Eagles’ last four drives ended with turnovers before

the final effort concluded with a turnover on downs. Plassmeyer connected with Austin Kempker for a 37-yard scoring play to put the icing on Westminster’s homecoming cake in what turned out to be an 11-point victory for the Blue Jays. UNW finished with 145 yards on the ground while the Purple and Gold defense held Westminster to minus-1 yard rushing in the second half. The Eagles limited the Blue Jays’ passing efforts in the final 30 minutes too, but quarterback Jacob Fletcher (Moorhead, Minn./Park Christian) was only able to complete nine of his 22 passes for 135 yards while being sacked three times. All three of Westminster’s touchdown plays all came on first or second downs. When the down and distance scenario got to third down, the Eagles contained the Blue Jays on nine of 11 attempts. Nathan Van Zee (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) had a part in that effort, finishing the day with a team-high 11 tackles, which included 3.5 tackles for a loss.

HEAD COACH KIRK TALLEY 2015 represents Kirk Talley’s 15th season of leading the Northwestern football team. Under Talley’s watch, the Eagles won back-to-back Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championships in 2001 and 2002 with undefeated league records, a north division title in the UMAC in 2003, and two more outright conference titles with undefeated league records in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Coach Talley has been a head coach in the UMAC for 22 years, with his past coaching experiences involve current league members Crown College (Minn.) and Greenville College (Ill.) and former member Mount Senario (Wis.). While at Mount Senario, Talley’s team won the UMAC conference title and he was recognized as the coach of the year for his success. Other stints along his coaching career path include Taylor University (Ind.), Northern State University (S.D.), and Miami University (Ohio). After starting his collegiate football career as a player at Golden Valley Lutheran College, Talley played at Pacific Lutheran University for Frosty Westering, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Talley strives to see his program honor God through football as the gridiron provides his players with the opportunity to glorify God using the talents and abilities they have been blessed with both individually and corporately. Together with his wife Terri, Kirk is the father to two adult children, Brittni and Kristi.
