A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT

Eureka comes into the weekend 5-4 and winners of its last three contests. The Red Devils came out on top, 10-7, in a defensive battle last Saturday at Minnesota Morris. EAGLES UPDATE News and notes from Northwestern Athletics The University of Northwestern volleyball team claimed the outright Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) title with wins over Minnesota Morris and Martin Luther last week. The Eagles finished 8-0 in the league and swept each of their opponents in conference play. The UNW men’s cross country was led by Wil Maki (10th) and Jackson Peterson (13th) at the UMAC Cross Country Championships Saturday. Both were named Second Team All-UMAC after leading the Eagles to a fourth-place team finish. Alyssa Arends finished 15th in the race to help the women’s team take sixth at the meet. Arends was named All-Conference for her performance. She finished the course in 26:23.3. The UNW football team escaped the Land of Lincoln with a 21-19 win over Greenville last Saturday. The Eagles defense stopped Greenville’s two-point conversion attempt with 1:48 remaining in the fourth to hang on and move to 7-1 in UMAC play. Zac Cash ran for 126 yards on 17 carries – averaging an impressive 7.4 yards per carry – to lead the Eagles. Caleb Couwenhoven grabbed a pair of Grant Schoen first half touchdown passes in the win. Ben Greener led the defense with 17 tackles. The UNW women’s basketball team downed visiting Dordt College, 76-75, in an exciting exhibition contest last Saturday inside the Ericksen Center. It was the regular season opener for NAIA Dordt. The Eagles will open their regular season Nov. 14 at Carleton.

Notes from last year’s Northwestern - Eureka game EUREKA, Ill. – The University of Northwestern went on a first half tear that propelled the Eagles to a surprising 48-16 victory over Eureka College. Northwestern owned a 3410 lead after 30 minutes of play. Northwestern was nearly running on all cylinders on offense, but also received a strong showing from its defense while catching a few breaks along the way. The Eagles scored a touchdown on five of their first seven possessions, starting with a first effort that needed just four plays to go 44 yards for a score. But before the offensive output was preempted by a defensive stop to begin the game as UNW forced Eureka into a threeand-out, needing a mere minute and 25 seconds to put the ball back in the Eagles’ hands. That was the tone for much of the initial half. The Red Devils, who scored on just two of their eight drives, assembled just one effort that lasted more than three plays in the home team’s first even offerings. By the time Eureka put a 22-yard field goal through following a nine-play drive in the second quarter, the Eagles had 34 points on the scoreboard. Eureka certainly didn’t expect its home opener to start this way. Antonio Greenwo’s fumbled kickoff return after a Josh Sinnen touchdown

run seemed to fit the bill for how the Red Devils’ day went, especially when the Eagles scored again on the very next play. Joe Sutton caught his second touchdown pass on UNW’s first drive after halftime, and the two teams traded scores in the fourth before Northwestern was back on a bus for the 450-mile trip home. The Eagles more than doubled Eureka in total yardage, accumulating 512 yards throughout the day while holding the Red Devils to 248. Four different rushers helped UNW post 186 yards on the ground as quarterback Jacob Fletcher had one of his best days in a Northwestern uniform, completing 15 of 24 passes for 326 yards and three TDs. Caleb Couwenhoven needed just three catches to collect 98 yards through the air. As a team, the Eagles, who were wearing their home-purple tops, converted on five of seven third down opportunities. Eureka was only able to keep the drive going on two of their eight third down chances. Northwestern held Eureka quarterback Blake Robles to 140 yards on 12 of 22 passing.

HEAD COACH KIRK TALLEY 2015 represents Kirk Talley’s 15th season of leading the Northwestern football team. Under Talley’s watch, the Eagles won back-to-back Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championships in 2001 and 2002 with undefeated league records, a north division title in the UMAC in 2003, and two more outright conference titles with undefeated league records in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Coach Talley has been a head coach in the UMAC for 22 years, with his past coaching experiences involve current league members Crown College (Minn.) and Greenville College (Ill.) and former member Mount Senario (Wis.). While at Mount Senario, Talley’s team won the UMAC conference title and he was recognized as the coach of the year for his success. Other stints along his coaching career path include Taylor University (Ind.), Northern State University (S.D.), and Miami University (Ohio). After starting his collegiate football career as a player at Golden Valley Lutheran College, Talley played at Pacific Lutheran University for Frosty Westering, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Talley strives to see his program honor God through football as the gridiron provides his players with the opportunity to glorify God using the talents and abilities they have been blessed with both individually and corporately. Together with his wife Terri, Kirk is the father to two adult children, Brittni and Kristi.
