It seems like the weather is Sermons changing from in summer to fall. September As the official start of fall is just weeks away, we will begin our fall faith emphasis – “Being a Christian in the Midst of a Fallen World.” As I look around at the world today I see mostly chaos & confusion in the midst of evil. Jesus has not called us to huddle up and avoid the darkness…He’s called us to be the light of the world so that we can attract people to Him. How do we do that? We become the evangelists (bearers of the Good News) that He commanded His followers to be in the 2nd chapter of Acts. The challenges facing us as “Christ followers” are greater than they have ever been. As we learn some techniques for sharing the Good News over the next seven weeks, my hope is that we can become who God has called us to be. Sept. 6

Thursday Lunch Bunch The Lunch Bunch met Thursday, August 20. There were 5 people who came and enjoyed good food and fellowship. We meet each 3rd Thursday of the month at the West Side Diner at 11:30 a.m. If you would like to join us, you would be most welcome. Clip this article and pin it to September 17 on your calendar.

“Just 4 Men” On Saturday, September 12, at 7:30 a.m., “Just 4 Men” will meet for breakfast, fellowship, and a lesson based on the Tim Keller book, Prodigal God. This month the lesson will be about “Two Lost Sons.” Usually we see the parable as a story about a good son and a bad son. God’s love is obvious as the father goes out to meet the returning “bad son.” Tim Keller helps us to see that both sons are lost. Both sons desire the father’s things rather than the father…they are just going about getting his stuff in different ways. All men of the church are invited because “Just 4 Men” is about more than just four men!

Shiloh Youth Group is striving to draw each of our teens closer to God. Each week we gather for fun and food. We enjoy food for our physical bodies as well as Spiritual food. Our current series of lessons are helping us deal with the troubles, trials, and storms of life while bearing the fruit of the Spirit. SYG is for youth from 6th through 12th grade. With the new school year we will continue to meet almost every Sunday at 6 p.m. The Sr. High youth are invited to share in leadership by choosing and leading the games we play each week. If you are looking for a way to serve or help out, sign up now to provide food for a meeting or see Pastor Mark if you would like to help in other ways.

Fellowship Time Every Sunday at 9 a.m. we enjoy visiting with each other before Sunday school. Please join us for a cup of coffee or juice and a donut in the Fellowship Hall. These people are in charge of setting up the fellowship time in September: September 6 – Greta Krawczyk September 13 – Darren & Sarah McKaig & Family September 20 – Mike & Teresa Rose September 27 – Nina & Richard Holle Note: If you are willing to be added to the list of volunteers, please contact Phyllis Hood.

A Memo from Pastor Tim: I recognize that it is only September and committee sign-up sheets for 2016 don’t appear until closer to the end of the year. However, if an effort to be more efficient in the ministry of Shiloh and to give committee chairs more input into the church’s budget, sign-up sheets for committees will be out between September 6th and 27th. The committee assignments will be made on September 30th and new committees will be encouraged to meet and formulate some ideas so that when the budget is prepared, Pastor Mark & I will have some guidelines for the budget numbers that are submitted to the church board for approval. As always, if you do not sign up for a committee, you will be assigned…so pick the area in which you want to serve Shiloh.

Even though the Combined Sunday School and Worship Contributions in June were on budget at $19,926, the strong contributions and controlled expenses in previous months allowed $8.5k to be transferred to the cash reserve. These contributions have generated $20,572 in the first half of the year for support of local, national, and international Christian organizations and missionaries.

Growing Together in Love (GTIL) June Year to Date Additional Payment on Principal Interest Reduction over Life of Loan Months Reduced on Life of Loan Original Loan Final Payment Date Current Final Payment Date

Month YTD $1,161 19,197 1,427 157,261 0.5 31.0 February 2040 May 30, 2032

In September of 2014 it was predicted that the loan amount would be approximately $825k in May of this year. Due to God’s providence and the way your hearts have been touched to give, the loan amount is now at $792k. The refinancing of the loan and the increased payment schedule that was implemented in March reduced the life of the loan by two years and reduced the interest by approximately $131k over the life of the loan. When Shiloh began to make additional payments on the loan in May 2011, each additional dollar paid on principal reduced the amount of interest by over three and one half dollars. As the loan continues to be reduced, that ratio changes such that each additional dollar paid on principal reduced the amount of interest by one and one-quarter dollars. If you are led to contribute toward reducing the loan, please insert your gifts in the GTIL pink envelopes and place them in the offering plate to be blessed or place them in the drop box just outside the main sanctuary doors in the narthex. It is encouraged that GTIL gifts ae to be in addition to the tithes and offerings.

Despite the fact that I have seen Him provide countless times before, I was still surprised. I am glad that I am in awe of God. I am disappointed in myself, that I am just as forgetful as the Israelites, walking through the desert to the Promised Land. I knew that God would somehow provide, but yet I was still surprised. While I was in Mexico, God moved in my heart and confirmed what I have known since a young age. I am called to do foreign mission work south of the United States border. Even though I may have ignored Him during some years of my life, it is now abundantly clear, that if I am to follow Jesus, it will mean living in a country that is not my own. Zucchini ‘Mock Apple’ Pie Submitted by Nina Holle

It’s hard to believe, but this Zucchini Pie actually does taste like Apple Pie!

6 C. zucchini (peel, cut lengthwise, remove seeds, and slice ¼-inch thick) 1 C. granulated sugar 1/2 C. brown sugar 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon 1 ½ tsp. cream of tartar 2 T. cornstarch ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. vinegar Butter Pastry for two-crust pie

Puzzle answer can be found on the following page.

Preheat oven to 475º. Cook zucchini sliced in boiling water until barely tender, about 2 minutes. Remove from stove and drain well (see “Tip,” below). In a bowl, toss zucchini with sugars, cinnamon, cream of tartar, cornstarch and salt until well coated. Place pastry in a 9inch, greased pie pan. Fill with zucchini mix. Dot with butter, drizzle with vinegar. Top with crust. Bake for 12 minutes at 475º. Reduce heat to 350º and bake about 1 hour and 15 minutes. (Tip: Make sure the zucchini is well-drained and cooled before adding to sugar mixture, or sugar will liquefy and make a river in your pie dish.)

Prayer is asking for rain. Faith is carrying an umbrella.

Daily Bible Reading 2015 As we continue reading 1 and 2 Samuel, we continue to see the guidance, the sovereign will, and the power of God in the lives of the people of Israel. We finished the reading in August with the anointing of David as the King of Israel while Saul was still on the throne. We will see the schemes of Saul as he tries to extend his reign over Israel by getting rid of David. The power of God is demonstrated over and over as David continually spares Saul’s life. Eventually, Saul’s demise comes by his own hand and David becomes the King. In 2 Samuel, we will read of the rule of David over Israel in what came to be known as the “glory days” of Israel. Happy reading!
