Solomon Middle and High School Weekly Memo Monday, November 10 Sunday, November 16
SCHOOL NEWS All District Choir This past Saturday, four of our students woke up in the wee hours of the morning to travel to Junction City and audition for AllDistrict Choir. In the past few years, only one person from Solomon has made AllDistrict. It was our goal to get two of our students in to this select choir. Out of the four students that auditioned, three of them made it! Congratulations to Morgan Clarke, Avery Rouse, and Luke Ryan! These three students will be performing in early December as AllDistrict choir members. After performing, the top eight vocalists from each vocal range will be announced and asked to perform as part of the Kansas AllState Choir. Please join me in congratulating them in their hard work. After School Students are required to leave school by 3:45pm each day we are in session unless they are attending after school tutoring, detention, or receiving extra classroom support from a teacher. Students should not be wandering the halls after school. NHS Service Learning Project The Solomon High School National Honor Society will be sponsoring a canned food drive for the Dickinson County food bank, from November 17 21. Our goal for Solomon Middle and High School is to collect 875 cans of food for the needy of Dickinson County. Laundry baskets will be placed in each first hour classroom for students to drop off their canned goods for that day. As a reward, if Solomon Middle and High School reach their goal of 875 students will view a movie on Tuesday, November 25 and participate in a dodge ball tournament. These events will occur after lunch for the middle and high school. Students will be able to bring their own snacks and blankets and pillows for the movie. Veteran’s Day Assembly On Tuesday, November 11, Solomon High School will recognize Veteran’s Day with an assembly in the gymnasium. Mrs. Griffin’s, Agricultural Leadership and Communication class as well as her FFA officers will organize and prepare the assembly. Her classes will also be involved with elementary Veteran’s Day activities during the week. Character Word of the Month FCA will be sponsoring a character word of the month each month for the remainder of the school year. Posters pertaining to the word and the definition will be posted around school. In addition, teachers will be asked to spend time throughout the month, as part of their lesson plans, focusing on the character trait and the benefits of that trait as students progress through school. The character word for the month of November is GRATITUDE. Gorilla TShirts In an effort to increase student participation during the winter sports season, Solomon High School is selling Gorilla tshirts for $5 to all district students. We are asking that our students wear these tshirts to all basketball games to support our winter sports teams and demonstrate school pride and sportsmanship. At the high school level we will have a signin sheet at EVERY basketball game. Students who attend the game will sign in under their grade level. At the end of basketball season we will tabulate which class had the most students attend ball games. The class with the most support will receive a pizza party in March, paid for and sponsored by the school. The tshirt order form is attached to this email and available in the elementary and high school offices. TSHIRT ORDER FORMS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14! Support the Gorillas.
American Education Week Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education. The conventions of both organizations subsequently adopted resolutions of support for a national effort to raise public awareness of the importance of education. In 1921, the NEA Representative Assembly in Des Moines, Iowa, called for designation of one week each year to spotlight education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs." The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 410, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving. This school year, American Education Week will be celebrated November 17th through November 21st. Salina Technical College Freshmen and Sophomore Night Salina Area Technical College will host a High School Freshmen and Sophomore night on November 19, 2014 at 6:00pm at the campus. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce prospective students and parents to the free technical programs that Salina Tech can offer. Solomon High School currently has seven juniors and seniors involved with this program. If interested, please have your student visit with Mr. Long and register online at www.salinatech.
