Friday 12th September 2014 Dear Parents, The children have settled well and enthusiastically into their new school routines. We had an informative E-Safety and Cyber-bullying Parent Workshop led by Chris Carter from Hertfordshire and guidance from this workshop can be found on our school website. Many thanks to Mrs Burley for organising this event. School Dates: Diary dates for the major events during the year are attached. I have asked Mrs Holden to check the dates so that events at the Junior School do not clash with any events at the Infant School. The School Photographer will be in school on Monday15th September to take individual and family photographs. If brothers and sisters are in the Junior School they will automatically have a photograph taken together in addition to an individual photograph. If you would like a family photograph including children who do not attend the Junior school, provision will be made for this from 8.00a.m.8.30a.m.on Monday morning. Beginning of School Year Mass: We will be having a Mass to ask for God’s blessing on the new school year and to welcome new children and families to our school. The Mass will be on Wednesday 24th September at 11.00a.m. You are very welcome to join us. Data Collection: Please return the Data Collection form sent out last week without further delay. School office: School staff are engaged in administrative tasks each day before school. Please do not come to the office before 8.45 a.m. Every Wednesday at 9.10 a.m. we have an achievement assembly, where children celebrate birthdays and special awards. If children have achieved a special award outside school they can drop it off in a box outside my office on Tuesday and it will be acknowledged in assembly on Wednesday. If your child has been awarded with a gold award then you will be notified by text when it will be given. All parents and family are welcome to join us on a Wednesday.

Introductory meetings will be held for Year 5 & 6 parents on Wednesday 17th September at 9.10-9.40a.m. The meetings are an opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher and to gain an overview of the curriculum for the year. The start of the school day at the Juniors is 8.45 a.m. It is important that your child arrives punctually every day. The children are expected to complete maths work each day before registration. It is essential to practice basic skills regularly to keep them sharp. If your child has this opportunity every day they are at an advantage. There are a number of children who are arriving to school before 8.45am. and are not supervised by an adult. For your child’s safety please ensure that your child is not left unaccompanied on school premises before this time. Moving onto Secondary School: The local papers have listed the Open Evening dates for Secondary Schools in St Albans and Harpenden. All applications for secondary school should be made online at www.hertsdirect.org/admissions by 31st October 2015. Please feel free to come and speak to myself, Mrs Jeffery or your child’s class teacher if you have any queries about the process. It is essential that you apply on time, as late applications will not be considered in the first round of applications. Loreto and Nicholas Breakspear also require a priest known to the family to complete a form to be returned to them by the deadline of the 31st October. Please note that Father Charles will be available to sign forms for secondary transfer on Friday 17th October from 4.00-6.00p.m., Saturday 18th October from 9.0010.00a.m.and on Saturday 25th October from 9.30-11.00 a.m. School Book Amnesty: we have noticed from our records that there are a number of school books that have not been returned. We would be delighted if the books were returned, there will be a box in the front entrance and any school books you find at home (they will have a school stamp on the inside cover) can be dropped in the box. Thank you. Breakfast Club: Breakfast Club hours are from 8.00 am until 8.50 a.m when the children are escorted to their classrooms. Junior children are taken across to their school, departing at 8.40 am. The cost is £3 per day, no need to book, £5 for two children from the same family. Mindfulness: “Mindfulness" classes are open on a Tuesday in SS Alban & Stephen junior school hall, 8.30-9.30pm. The classes are for anyone from the age of 16; they are a great way to help you to control unwanted thoughts and to give you the skills to focus on the moment. In this busy world, it is an opportunity to allow time for you to simply "be" and to have an hour free of phones, networks and other distractions. Please give it a try - and bring your teenagers; imagine 60 minutes of pure, screenless time together! £5 for the hour; pay on the door."
