WILL THEY
come?
A WORD FROM PASTOR MARIE
It was a great privilege as an Evangelist to be among the 600 invited guests to the 2012 Converge 21 Leadership Summit in Virginia. This summit consisted of Leaders, Scholars and Next Gen participants who are involved with the Empowered 21 movement. [Empowered21 - a Global Spirit-empowered movement throughout the world focusing on crucial issues facing the church today, with its vision being “connecting of generations for intergenerational blessing and impartation”. It’s mission, “That every person on Earth would have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ through the Power and Presence of the Holy Spirit... by Pentecost 2033”] The summit was challenging, informative, and exhilarating! I left feeling renewed in anticipation of what God will accomplish through those of us who are willing to yield ourselves completely to the leading of God the Holy Spirit in these ungodly days. The challenges of so many of our North American churches were discussed in this summit. For example: How will we affect this lost generation? Will the next generation experience the mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s presence in this day? How can we encourage them to return to the Church, accept Salvation, and live out a Spirit filled life? What
must the mature and maturing generations do to demonstrate the spirit filled life to the next generation? And of course, Discipleship - what’s our role and responsibility? Will this generation come back to the Lord in the 21st century? “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is ... be filled with the Spirit ...” (Ephesians 5:17-18) In the midst of all this, I need to take you over to another story which transpired in Africa!
“CAN SOMEONE LIKE ME COME”? Throughout the week, the Crusade services in Liberia kept growing numerically as the people faithfully invited more and more unsaved friends daily. Seeing the hundreds of people at
the altar for salvation each night absolutely re-opened our eyes to the ‘drawing power of the Word of God’ – especially because this is a recovering post war country with young people who are so broken and discouraged by the effects of a senseless war. One of their Youth Directors stated that the adults in Liberia have given up on the youth of his country and consider them all to be somewhat ‘thugs and destroyers’. This context has been derived because the
youth are so aimless, so hopeless, so empty and so discouraged; therefore, with seemingly nothing to live for, there is great rebellion and increasing crimes. The crusade theme – Dream Again resonated with everyone. Young Liberians want to dream again and were excited to be challenged to do so, as most had given up on themselves. While there has been some physical assistance in this country, there has been no psychological assistance for anyone, although most have observed such atrocities even as kids. Yet, they are discovering that God, the Holy Spirit is always, and will always be their Helper! Each night we had the joy of seeing God our Savior saving, healing, setting people free from pain and trauma and placing new dreams in their hearts. One night as we returned to the hotel, we met a young woman who had resorted to prostitution as a means of survival (all family members dead). Looking at this beautiful young woman (Tina) I simply said – “hon, you are so beautiful, is your mom around to pray for you?” With that question we were able to minister to a despairing young woman now working as a prostitute only to survive, but hates it and hates herself. She asked – “Can I come to your crusade; can someone like me come?” As I reflect now

on this story, I can envision Jesus at the well ministering to the despised woman whose heart was yearning for what men or money could not offer her. In Liberia, both “war and poverty” has robbed the Churches of its perspective so consequently the millions of young
people there do not see the Church as a place they can go to! Conversely in North America “peace and prosperity” has robbed our Churches of its biblical perspective, and true hope in the only Savior, Jesus Christ; consequently the millions of young people here do not
see the Church as a place they need to go to! Again, I am excited at the opportunity to work with an incredible team of people committed to seeking the Lord for a fresh outpouring in this day. Be blessed,
Pastor Marie
M I S S I O N R E P O R T 2 012 ✈ T H E T E A M ’ S P E R S P E C T I V E O N L I B E R I A I believe the timing was orchestrated by God and will continue to prove to be a defining moment and a turning point in the history of the Liberian nation. The statistics say it all: five nights of evangelizing yielded over 2400+ salvations for Christ, and another 2800 people received healing, re-dedications and deliverances. All glory to God! But in a country that was ripped apart by 14 years of civil war, and presently is experiencing the reality of 80% unemployment, I personally struggled with how effective our follow up would be. God, nonetheless, raised up a remnant of young pastors that have caught the vision of reaching, teaching, caring and equipping the church to believe God for a positive future for Liberia. So, I will continue to pray towards this end for Liberia. – Rev. Colin Gittens, Lead Pastor, The Gathering Place The contention for the soul of Liberia comes with a great measure of resistance from the powers of darkness. Almost each night we spent in Monrovia, I was awakened in the early hours of the morning to intercede for a loved one who was under attack from the enemy, and God prevailed. My greatest joy was to see hundreds upon hundreds answer the altar call with many crying out for mercy. Of special note was Wednesday evening when the lovely people of Liberia went on their faces crying out for their land. I left Liberia with a definite sense of conviction that God had turned around this Nation to be truly "The Land of Hope" coinciding with the inauguration of the President's second term. We felt God had sent us ahead to fix the spiritual climate before the social-economic and political spheres would thrive. God bless Liberia
I walked in a community that ripped me up on the inside with hundreds of kids unable to attend a school. No power for years, no running water, a granddad reporting that 27 people lived in a tin shack home, polio victims congregating in wheelchairs, war victims on crutches... The forgotten ... I spoke to many... I spoke only hope... I can only hope that one day...☺ Rev. Colin, Rev. Peter, Rev. Marie, Rev. Patrick
Coming from the 'Land of Smiles' (Thailand) and being in a land of 'few smiles', brokenness and loss I realize that so much grace and healing is needed. Our driver is an example... Rebels came killed his family...raising his voice he said "for no good reason!" and today the emotional scars remain. One story... Repeated in a million ways in this land! I made the great mistake to walk into the high school and asked to see the classrooms in session. I ended speaking 'hope' to six classes from grade 9 to 12. Serendipitous moments are sometimes the best! Remembering this quote: “Anytime you have a loss, play it down and pray it up. Focus on what's left, not what's lost” (Rick Warren) – Rev. Peter DeWit Missionary Thailand, Asia
