Sustainable Maryland Application Greenhouse Gas Innovative Demonstration Projects Neighborhood Electric Vehicle Purchase

Points Requested: 10

In an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint, the City has taken steps towards cutting down emissions in vehicles owned by the City. In 2013, the City received a Maryland Smart Energy Communities (MSEC) grant from the Maryland Energy Administration. In exchange for getting rid of a traditional gas powered vehicle, in our case, an old pickup truck, the grant provided funding to purchase three neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs). In November 2013, the City purchased three Polaris GEM NEVs. The NEVs are the primary vehicles for the City’s parking enforcement staff, and are occasionally used by the Office of Code Enforcement when performing their routine property checks. The NEVs are battery powered and recharge by plugging into a standard 110-volt outlet.
