Add Brotherly Kindness The apostle Peter wrote the following: “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (2Pe 1:5-7, KJV)” Let us consider the sixth attribute the apostle Peter urges his readers to add to their faith (i.e. “brotherly kindness”). The English phrase “brotherly kindness” is the term “philadephia” in the Greek New Testament. We are familiar with the meaning of the word philadephia because of the American city bearing same name, which is also know as the “City of Brotherly Love”. Brotherly kindness is also defined by Strong's Concordance as “fraternal affection” or fraternal love. What does fraternal mean? It carries the idea of being in a special close knit community. This community is the church. In this community, we have a special spiritual relationship with each other. We are brothers and sisters to each other. And, we are sons and daughters of God. How did we become a part of this special relationship or family? The answer is we were all born again into it (John 3:1-8; I Corinthians 12:13; 1 Peter 1:23). Since this is the case, we are to love one another genuinely because we are loved by God. This is why Paul wrote, “In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another (Romans 12:10, ASV)”. Welcome Visitors We hope you find our worship service enriching and inspiring. Please let us know if you have any questions about our church family or how we may serve you in your quest for God.
