TIDEWATER Times Message from President Nancy Moore

A

pril is an exciting month for administrative professions. This is a month full of history, awareness, and honor. Most admins know about Administrative Professionals Day but do you know where it all started? According to the IAAP, the event was originally organized in 1952 as National Secretaries Week by the National Secretaries Association (now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals). The association was successful in getting the first National Secretaries Week proclaimed from June 1 - 7, 1952. It was created with two objectives: to recognize “the secretary, upon whose skills, loyalty, and efficiency the functions of business and government offices depend,” and to call attention “through favorable publicity, to the tremendous potential of the secretarial career.” Three years later it was moved to the last full week of April. The name changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981 and then to Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to cover the wide range of job titles and responsibilities among administrative support staff. IAAP remains the sole sponsor of Administrative Professionals Week (APW) and Administrative Professionals Day (APD). This event is celebrated worldwide and has become one of the largest workplace observances. IAAP recommends that employers observe APW by providing their admins with education and training through seminars, continuing education and self-study materials. 1|Page

Our profession is always changing to meet the demanding needs of businesses around the world. We are known as the “go to” people in the work force. We need to stay on top of the new software and hardware that are constantly coming out. Being able to work closely with managers and business owners is a must so soft skills are very important. Be a great team member in your organization, do your job well, and exceed at everything you can. You will reap the benefits in the end knowing that you have done all you can and that you are a professional. I am proud to be a part of the administrative profession and IAAP. I hope you are recognized as a true professional and are appreciated where you work.

Upcoming Exam information from International Strategic Plan 2013-2018: Goal 3 – Professional Development & Certification CAP Exam — Computer-Based Testing One of the initiatives of our Strategic Plan 20132018 is to move our CAP certification exam and OM specialty exam from paper and pencil testing to computer-based testing. We are excited to announce that we currently plan 2|Page

to move to computer-based testing in 2015. We can’t share a lot of specifics yet; however, we can say that computer-based testing will be done through a company with secure testing centers and a consistent delivery system, with testing locations throughout North America. In order to make this a smooth transition, we will not be providing testing for CAP certification or the OM specialty in November 2014. As such, the only test date in 2014 will be the upcoming May exams. Also, with the change to computer-based testing, we will be changing our application deadline dates and the actual exam dates. Our plan right now is to offer the exams in March and September, replacing our current schedule of May and November. This is an exciting change for our certification program, and we know there will be many questions. Once all of the details are finalized, we will provide updated information. Our goal is to have this information available by EFAM 2014.
