The Win Another one from the vault: is in the Parents and Leaders was at a game the other day and heard an Effort Iassistant coach shout angrily to his son on the

It's tournament time for many of our players. 10U players and older are starting, or Jim Doty, Touchline Editor are about to start, their end of season play-offs, which will determine who will advance to area-wide competitions and beyond. In addition, eleven teams have been entered into Thankgiving holiday tournaments: nine in the Miles Standish Tournament and two in the Arroyo Seco Cup Tournament. Tournament play heightens our focus on winning, and that's not entirely bad. The strongest steel comes out of the hotest furnace.

But what is a win? Before the ball can get into the net, players need to get control of the ball, handle the ball properly, pass or dribble, avoid the defense and shoot. Each goal represents many small victories. For many new players, just being assertive on the field is a victory. Respect and reward the effort, every victory, and the WIN will come. By the way, that principal applies to all ages and all endeavors. In our Region, we have 241 volunteers who fill 314 roles to develop and deliver a quality youth soccer program and a fun, family environment: coaches, referees, and more. When you see someone making the effort, cheer them on -- even if they make a mistake or two.

field after the other team had managed to score a goal. When I suggested that he should keep his comments positive, he replied that he would talk to his son any way he liked. Each parent shares a special bond with each child—no two are exactly the same, even within the same family. Each is built minute-by-minute over millions of minutes before joining us for 60 to 120 minutes on the field. That special bond has a special language of frowns and smiles, hard words and soft, that few bystanders truly understand. I have no desire to trespass into that territory. But each of us, especially those in leadership roles, should remember that bystanders hear, see and interpret our actions in the more common language of life, in which caring and respect are not usually expressed with scowls and angry words. Our behavior at the field, including how we behave with our own children, sets an example for everyone within sight and hearing. Positive coaching and good sportsmanship are basic tenets of AYSO, and it is everyone’s responsibility to see that they are practiced at all times. While at AYSO activities, referees, assistant referees, coaches, assistant coaches and team parents are not free to talk to their children any way they like. We are role models representing AYSO. Please remember to keep your comments positive, instructive and encouraging.

10U-14U Playoff Schedule

Here is the 10U-14U playoff schedule as it stands today. The official schedule is on our website (AYSO60.org). Check there for updates. The two flights of 10U Boys (Teams 1-6 and 7-12) will finish round play today. After round play, the teams will be divided into 3, 4-team brackets for a two-game elimination style playoff. Seeding within each bracket will be determined following our tie-breaking policy. The top two teams from each flight will play in the championship bracket. The 3rd and 4th place teams from each flight will play in a second, non-championship bracket. Finally, the 5th and 6th place teams from each flight will play in a third, non-championship, bracket.
