TOWN OF LANTANA POSITION DESCRIPTION OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT- MECHANIC Full Time Position Reports to Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor

FLSA Non-Exempt Position

JOB SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor designee, the employee is a skilled mechanic in the maintenance/repair of light, medium, and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel vehicles, lawn mowers, pumps and related equipment. Repairs, overhauls, and replaces engines, clutches, brakes, alternators, ignition systems, and other automotive parts/equipment. Duties include conducting inspections and participating in a preventative maintenance program to ensure the safe and efficient operation of automotive and related equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in this classification. Repairs and maintains all Town owned of light, medium, and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel vehicles, heavy equipment, lawn mowing equipment, portable pumps, generators and other mechanical equipment. Schedules and performs preventative maintenance work. Requisitions materials and parts. Maintains an accurate record system relating to repairs made, maintenance schedules and tool/part inventory. Records incoming/outgoing parts as part of vehicle maintenance inventory program. Inspects, tests, diagnoses, and repairs vehicle/equipment systems and components. Conducts diagnostic computer testing to assist in identifying electrical or mechanical problems, and consults with supervisor about repairs. Repairs/overhauls gasoline and diesel engine equipment. Performs general welding work, including cutting, fabricating, and repairing metal. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools, equipment, and facility clean and organized. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment and personal protection equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety. Makes service calls as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Extensive working knowledge of automobiles and their associated or related components. • Extensive knowledge of automotive electrical systems and the ability to diagnose and repair electrical system components. • Knowledge of automotive testing and repair equipment. Examples include, but are not limited to computer scanner, battery/alternator tester, A.C. charging station, etc. • Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate records as required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Town officials and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must possess a High School diploma, or equivalent. Two (2) years’ experience in the automotive field. Must possess, or be able to obtain within 6 months of employment, a Florida Class “B” CDL (tanker endorsement). Applicant must possess the following ASE certifications, or be able to obtain all three certifications within the first year of employment: Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Heating and Air Conditioning. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS A condition of employment is that the incumbent must have and maintain suitable and dependable means of communications/transportation available whereby contacts can be made by management and staff for response to emergencies requiring expeditious corrective action. Employee will be required to carry a cellular phone at all times and must have the ability to respond to all calls within 30 minutes. Where an emergency impacts the Town of Lantana, all employees are subject to work or return to duty as directed to ensure continuation and restoration of services, maintain safety and fulfill the Town’s responsibility to its citizens.
