Offense Stumbles In Loss to OWU
Wabash suffered its first loss of the 2017 season Saturday in a 16-13 contest against Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore kicker Schuyler Nehrig (Greenfield, IN/Warren Central) accounted for all 13 points for the Little Giants. Nehrig booted a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter to provide a 3-0 lead for Wabash. Nehrig scored the only touchdown of the game when he recovered a blocked field goal try and raced 24 yards for his first career touchdown to tie the game at 13-13 after he also kicked the extra point. Nehrig's return of the blocked field goal attempt was highlighted by ESPN and was named the D3football.com Play of the Week. It is believed he is the first kicker to score a touchdown and kick an extra point and a field goal in a college football game since Jeffrey Lang from SUNY Cortland caught a touchdown pass, kicked a field goal, and caught a pass and scored a twopoint conversion on a bad snap on an extra-point attempt in a game versus Kean University. The Wabash defense limited OWU to 91 rushing yards and 375 yards of total offense. Henry Webberhunt (SR/DB/Indianapolis, IN/North Central) forced a fumble that was recovered by Klay Fullenkamp (SR/DL/Muncie, IN/Delta). Evan Hansen (JR/LB/Carmel, IN/Guerin Catholic) paced the defense with a career-best 14 tackles, including 11 solos.
Little Giants Running Toward A Record
Wabash heads into Saturday's game at Oberlin averaging 273.3 rushing yards per game through its first six contests. That total leads the North Coast Athletic Conference teams and ranks 13th in the nation. The Wabash single-season record for rushing yards per game is 260.2 set in the 2015 over the course of 13 games. Individually, Ike James (SO/RB/Lowell, IN/Lowell) remains among the national leaders in several rushing categories. He ranks 14th in rushing yards with 825 and is 15th in rushing touchdowns with 10. His 137.5 yardsper-game average is also 14th-best among Division III players. James leads the NCAC in all three categories. James has produced the second-highest rushing yards total in school history for a player in his first season in a Wabash uniform. Aaron Lafitte rushed for 1,008 yards as a freshman in 2003. Only three players listed as sophomores on the Little Giants' roster have rushed for more yards than James. Daryl Johnson ran for 907 yards in his sophomore season in 1979. Tim Oliver finished his 1988 season with 914 yards. Tyler Holmes is the all-time leading sophomore rusher for Wabash with 1,067 yards in 2012.
Top Team Numbers In Conference Statistics
The Little Giants lead the NCAC in several different statistical categories entering the closing stretch of the 2017 regular season. Wabash has limited opposing teams to 290.0 yards of total offense to lead NCAC teams and rank 47th overall among NCAA DIII squads. The Little Giants rank 21st in the nation and lead the NCAC in fourth-down conversions at 68.4 percent and are tops in the league in third-down conversion defense at 33.3 percent. The Little Giants have been whistled for the fewest penalty yards among NCAC teams at 22 and are 12th in the nation with average of 37 yards in penalties per game. Wabash is second in the nation behind Wartburg in average time of possession, holding the football for an average of 36:46 a game. Wartburg has a one-second advantage with an average of 36:47.
Oberlin College Quick Facts
Coach Morel’s Comments
“Ohio Wesleyan played a good game last Saturday, and we certainly did not play our best game. We feel like with the guys that are playing on offense that we need to be perfect every play to have a chance and we weren't on Saturday. We made a lot of mistakes. We've worked hard to clean those things up. We've now looked beyond the OWU game and are focused on Oberlin. I thought our defense played well. But offensively we've got to fix some issues we're having. The effort on Saturday was excellent. The loss wasn't because of effort. We just made too many mistakes. No matter how hard you play, if you're doing the wrong thing it's not going to work. I think we have corrected that. "This season is going by really fast. We only have four games left and we'll see what happens after that. The kids recognize that. We had a better practice Monday than we had any day last week. Tuesday was equally good. On Saturday's Game at Oberlin: “Oberlin is a team that has made a lot of improvements from last year and keeps getting better each and every week this season. It's evident they've lost four road games in a row. But equally evident is the fact that we're struggling to score points. Any opponents going to say if they can score some points, they've got a chance against Wabash. We've got some hurdles to overcome and our kids are completely aware of it."
Oberlin Preview
The Yeomen return to Oberlin for the first time in over a month. Oberlin played four consecutive road games after opening the season with home wins over Kalamazoo College (24-6) and Kenyon (31-10). Since the victory over the Lords on September 9, the Yeomen have lost at Wittenberg (34-0), at Denison (45-17), and at DePauw (26-10). Last week Oberlin lost 38-28 at Wooster. The Yeomen took a7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Zach Taylor (SO/QB/6-0/190/Artesia, CA/ Buena Park) to Ryan Gleeson (JR/WR/6-0/170/Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) before Wooster answered with three consecutive touchdowns, leading to a 21-14 halftime lead. Taylor has thrown for 1,088 yards and seven touchdown passes, completing 87-of-153 passes with five interceptions. Gleeson leads the Yeomen with 36 catches for 442 yards and three touchdowns. Corey Fussinger (SR/WR/6-3/200/Florence, KY/Cooper) ranks second on the team with 22 receptions for 327 yards and is tie for the team lead with three touchdown receptions. Robby Reinheimer (JR/WR/6-1/170/ Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) has made 21 catches for 333 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions. Senior running back Khalil Rivers (5-7/195/Franklin, MI/Detroit Country Day School) scored one touchdown and rushed for 63 yards against Wooster last week. He leads Oberlin with 274 rushing yards and two of the Yeomen's six rushing touchdowns. Taylor is the only other Oberlin with multiple rushing touchdowns, having scored twice on the ground. Von Wooding (SO/MLB/6-0/205/Flushing, OH/The Linsly School) leads Oberlin with 58 tackles. Jubreel Hason (SO/DB/5-9/170/Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) has recorded 44 solo tackles as well as forced and recovered a fumble. The Yeomen have sacked opposing quarterbacks 13 times, led by Luis Solorzano (SR/DE/6-2/235/Pleasanton, CA/Choate Rosemary Hall (CT)) with 3-1/2 for 30 yards.
