Christen Connects On 74-Yard TD Pass

While the only focus Saturday was working to earn a victory, one player set a personal single-game best effort in the matchup against Wittenberg.

Senior wide receiver and former high school quarterback Drake Christen (Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) completed a 74-yard pass to Oliver Page (SO/WR/South Bend, IN/Saint Joseph’s) for the first score of the game. The play marked the second time Christen had completed a pass at Wabash as a wide receiver. His first came in the 2015 Monon Bell Classic on a throw to quarterback Connor Rice (SR/Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) for eight yards. The 74-yard strike for a touchdown is the longest play of the season for the Little Giants. Christen also posted the longest rush of the year with a 65-yard run for a touchdown against Allegheny.

Marr Steps In

Wabash starting punter Derek Fox (JR/Yorktown, IN/Yorktown) ranked 15th in the nation in punting entering Saturday’s game versus Wittenberg with an average of 42.5 yards per attempt. He punted three times in the first half before being sidelined with a shoulder injury that may result in Fox missing a large portion of the season. Freshman Alex Marr (K-P/Indianapolis, IN/Pike) stepped in to handle those duties in the second half of the game. The first-year collegiate player booted seven times for an average of 39.4 yards. His first attempt came deep in the Wabash end zone and resulted in a 50-yard punt.

Record Chasers

Several Wabash players continue to move up the career records lists with each passing week of the 2016 season. Andrew Tutsie (SR/K/Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) already moved into the top spot on the extra point list earlier this season. Tutsie moved past Ian MacDougall ’14 and his mark of 125 PAT kicks made from 2011-2013. Tutsie has made 138 PAT attempts to this point in his final season. Tutsie is also chasing the career field goal record of 34 set by Joe Bevelhimer ’86. Tutsie ranks second with 27 field goals, also passing MacDougall who sits in third place with 26.

Drake Christen sits in seventh place in career receptions with 156, two behind Jonathan Horn ’12 in sixth place and 13 away from Chris Wiesehan ’94 in fifth place with 169.

Quarterback Connor Rice moved into 13th in career touchdown passes with 25 after connecting with Sammy Adams (SR/TE/Carmel, IN/ Guerin Catholic) on a 23-yard TD throw against Wittenberg. Rice is chasing Curt Selby ’89 in 12th place with 30 and needs 33 to move into the top ten all time ahead of Dave Harvey ’78.

Austin Brown (SR/DB/Griffith, IN/Griffith) and Delon Pettiford (SR/ DB/Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) both are among the top-10 in career interceptions in Wabash football history. Brown is tied with Chris Braun ’81 with 11 career picks. Pettiford is tied for 10th with three other Little Giants who collected 10 interceptions. Marty Kaiser ’88 owns the career interception mark with 17.

Hiram College Quick Facts

Coach Morel’s Comments “The team has really bounced back from Saturday’s loss at Wittenberg better than I have. They are resiliant Wabash men. They know the expectations of Wabash football. I think they will play well on Saturday.”

On Hiram: “The Hiram players are really athletic on both sides of the ball. They have good players who run well and move well. Certainly they are as equally athletic as we feel we are. They are probably faster in the defensive backfield than we are at wide receiver. That’s certainly a challenge. We need to be precise on our receiver routes. We didn’t do that last week against Wittenberg. We have to throw the ball more and improve that part of our game. We really have to be sharp with our assignments and not let their speed dictate the football game.”

Hiram Preview

The Terriers lost a 66-17 contest at DePauw last week after a 40-0 defeat at Westminster to open the season. Sandwiched in between was a 45-7 home win over Kenyon for a 1-2 overall record and a 1-1 conference record.

Hiram has averaged 20.7 points per game over the first three contests. The Terriers bring a balanced offensive attack into Saturday’s game against Wabash with an average of 121.3 rushing yards and 226.3 passing yards. Danny Robinson (JR/5-9/180/Labelle, FL/Labelle) paces the ground game with an average of 55 yards a game. He has rushed for 165 yards in 47 tries. Isaiah Jones (SO/5-10/225/Kent, OH/Kent Roosevelt) has carried 17 times for 60 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Joshua Philander (SR/6-0/215/Fort Myers, FL/ South Fort Myers) owns the other rushing TD for the Terriers on a 28-yard scamper into the endzone in the win against Kenyon.

Philander is the leading receiver for Hiram, averaging 86.7 yards per game to rank fourth among NCAC players in that category. He has caught 14 passes for 260 yards, and his three touchdown receptions ties for third among NCAC players. Jacob Luc (SR/WR/5-8/155/ Fremont, OH/Freemont Ross) is second among Terrier players with 12 receptions for 138 yards, including four catches for 42 yards last week against DePauw. Luc is not listed on this week’s two-deep list for the Terriers. David Perkins (SR/WR/5-5/160/Santa Anna, CA/Segerstrom) and Akili Tate (SR/WR/6-2/200/Los Angeles, CA/Junipero Sierra) each have double-digit receptions through three games. Perkins enters Saturday’s game with 11 catches for 97 yards and one TD. Tate has caught 10 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Starting quarterback Domenic Paolo (SR/6-1/200/Chardon, OH/ Fairport Harding) has thrown for 679 yards and six scores. He ranks fourth in the NCAC in passing yards per game with an average of 226.3 and in passing touchdowns.

Linebacker Kyle Burchett (SR/6-0/200/Fairport Harbor, OH/ Harding) has provided solid support in the running and passing game on defense for Hiram. He leads the team in tackles with 33, has 4-1/2 tackles for loss and one sack, and has an interception return for 15 yards. Zayd Mabin (SR/6-1/227/Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven) is the top defensive lineman with five tackles for losses and two sacks. DD Fleetion (SR/DB/5-11/215/Youngstown, OH/Youngstown East) has picked off three opponents’ passes to rank seventh in the nation and lead the NCAC in that category.
