You often hike mountains and traverse countryside as part of a specialized crew responsible for collecting the geophysical data used in oil and gas exploration. You’re physically fit and you like nature and travel; this is your world.
What does this career look like? With your packsack, tools and a GPS, you could pound stakes into the ground to mark the location of geophones used in seismic activity. Or, you’ll follow a pipeline locator and mark spots on the ground for pipelines, fibre optic cables, waterlines and other infrastructure. Maybe your math skills will be put to the test as you mark locations for dynamite used in seismic activity. Or, maybe you will break through the bush as part of the slash crew that clears the bush at a well site. You’ll assist in various aspects of the four phases of seismic operations: surveying, line clearing, seismic drilling and data aquisition and recording. There are a variety of roles in this occupation: 4 Chainer’s Assistants help measure, map and locate drilling locations. 4 Surveyor’s Assistants help collect and process survey readings. 4 Locator’s Assistants help find and document all buried utilities. 4 Packers clear debris from seismic lines and help move equipment. 4 Driller’s Helpers assist with drilling holes and placing charges. 4 Lineworkers place, remove, load and unload all seismic recording equipment. Regardless of the specific role, your groundwork ultimately helps answer the question: is there oil or gas down there?
HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma is preferred by employers but not necessary. Employees must pass a preemployment physical assessment and drug test. Licensing A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record may be required, depending on the company and role.

What would I do? You hike across various types of terrain. You may work clearing bushes, driving stakes into the ground, marking locations, drilling holes and hooking up equipment. Specific job requirements include: 4 Assisting in the collection and processing of field survey data using GPS equipment 4 Loading and unloading seismic equipment 4 Helping create line sketches and verifying the location of seismic lines, access routes, rivers, roads, etc.
