ABOUT THE MATCHUP PANTHERS FACE UCO, ARKANSAS TECH IN THANKSGIVNG CLASSIC After a 10-day break between games, the Drury Panthers are back in action this weekend at the O’Reilly Family Event Center playing host to Central Oklahoma (Friday at 3:15 p.m.) and Arkansas Tech (Saturday at 3:15 p.m.) in the Comfort Inn/Drury Thanksgiving Classic. It’s the first action for the Panthers since their dominating 73-44 win over Southwest Baptist in the Bank of Bolivar HIghway 13 Catfight at The O’ on November 13. Alex Hall scored 30 points and Ian Carter added 12 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Panthers past the Bearcats. Drury outscored SBU 39-13 in the second half to break open a tight game. SCOUTING THE UCO BRONCHOS Coach Terry Evans’ squad, based in Edmond, Okla., comes in with a 1-2 mark after suffering an 87-84 at home to Mid-America Christian on Tuesday despite 22 points from 6-6 senior Spencer Smith, only their eighth loss in their last 73 home games and second straight after falling 68-66 to Oklahoma City last weekend. Smith is averaging a team-leading 15.3 points for coach Terry Evans’ squad, while June Carter, a 6-7 senior, is adding 13.7 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds. The Bronchos (15-11 last season) are first-year members of the MIAA, where they were picked to finish seventh in the 15-team league in the coaches poll. SCOUTING THE ARKANSAS TECH WONDER BOYS Arkansas Tech will bring an 0-1 mark into the Classic and their Friday (1 p.m.) opener vs. UMSL. The Wonder Boys from Russellville, Ark., fell 75-60 at Northeastern State on November 15 in their opener despite 22 points and 7 rebounds from 6-4 senior guard Willie Kirkland (a transfer from Coastal Carolina) and 10 points from 6-10 senior Will Paul (a transfer from Stanford). Arkansas Tech was ranked No. 9 nationally in the Basketball Times preseason poll and is No. 19 in the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll coming off last season’s 26-6 campaign that saw the Wonder Boys advance to the NCAA-II Sweet 16. ATU, coached by Doug Karleskint, is preseason favorite to repeat as champion of the Great American Conference. SCOUTING THE UMSL TRITONS Coach Steve Tappmeyer’s UMSL squad is 3-0 on the season, including home wins over Lake Superior State (91-71) and Northwood (92-88) to open the season. The Tritons have three players averaging in doublefigures, led by 6-4 senior Joshua McCoy (15.7 ppg) and 6-0 junior Darlan Cartham (13.3 ppg).
