FACES of the FCS

The Big South scored its sixth win over an FBS opponent with Liberty’s 48-45 triumph u  over Big 12 member Baylor this past Saturday. It was the conference’s first-ever win over a Power 5 member, as well as the first FBS victory in a season-opener. The Big South’s six wins have all come since 2010. Other FCS wins last weekend included Howard (at UNLV), James Madison (at East Carolina), and Tennessee State (at Georgia State).   Tennessee State’s win marked the fifth time in six seasons and sixth in the last eight that the Ohio Valley recorded at least one win against a FBS foe. CAA Football recorded the 35th victory over a FBS foe in its history and its sixth in the past five years. And Howard’s win over UNLV Saturday night marked the second straight year the conference has earned an FBS win.

u The FCS had 10 wins against FBS teams last year, one more than 2015, and tied for the fourth-most in a single season in NCAA history. The FCS set a record in 2013 with 16 wins against FBS schools. There are 25 games featuring FCS-FBS matchups this weekend. u The Big Sky-MVFC Challenge Series kicks off this week, featuring five matchups between the two leagues. A total of eight intra-conference games are on the slate this year.

The 2017 NFL season gets underway Thursday, Sept. 7, as Kansas City takes on New England. Chiefs’ rookie Tanoh Kpassagnon (Villanova) was the first FCS player taken in the 2017 NFL Draft.

BIG SKY -- The Big Sky won four games in Week One to get settled into the 2017 season. Idaho State picked up the first victory of the season by a Big Sky team with a 37-6 win over Western Oregon. Weber State on the other hand scored a school record 76 points in the shutout over Montana Western, as it was the high roller of the week. Twelve of the league’s 13 teams will be in action this week with every foe being an FCS or FBS opponent. With two teams in the top six in passing offense – Montana and Northern Arizona – the Big Sky has five games this weekend versus the Missouri Valley Football Conference as part of the Challenge Series. No. 7/6 Eastern Washington will host No. 2 North Dakota State in one of the biggest non-conference showdowns this season. Breaking down the numbers, the Big Sky leads the FCS as the only league to have at least one kicker make a 50-plus yard field goal - Northern Colorado (56) and Sacramento State (52). Offense: WR Keelan Doss, UC Davis | Defense: LB Beau Duronslet, Portland State | Sp. Teams: PK Collin Root, Northern Colorado BIG SOUTH -- Liberty sophomore QB STEPHEN CALVERT set three Big South single-game passing records during the Flames’ win at Baylor. He established new marks for completions (44), attempts (60) and yardage (447) against the Bears. Calvert’s effort bested the previous records of 37 completions (Presbyterian’s TIM WEBB at Wofford in 2008), 57 attempts (Webb at Appalachian State in 2008) and 430 yards (Gardner-Webb’s LUCAS BEATTY at VMI in 2014). Calvert’s 447 yards of offense at Baylor is the fourth-most in a game in Big South history. Presbyterian freshman RB TORRANCE MARABLE rushed for 162 yards on 16 carries (10.1 yards per carry) in his collegiate debut at Wake Forest. It was the most rushing yards by a Blue Hose back since DARRELL BRIDGES had 186 at Coastal Carolina in 2015. Marable’s output was the most by PC player in a season-opener during the program’s Big South tenure, as well as the most rushing yards by a PC player against an FBS opponent. Monmouth DB and Buck Buchanan Award candidate MIKE BASILE became just the fourth player in Big South history with 200 career solo tackles when he eclipsed the milestone this past Saturday against Lafayette. His career total of 202 is fourth-most in league annals, and two away from sole possession of third-place. CAA FOOTBALL -- New Hampshire edged rival Maine, 24-23, last Thursday to retain the Brice-Cowell Musket and grab the early lead atop the CAA Football standings. UNH quarterback Trevor Knight threw a pair of TD passes and the Wildcats’ defense came up with two fourth-quarter interceptions to seal the victory. Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson passed for 239 yards and 3 TD’s in his collegiate debut. CAA Football teams went 3-1 against FCS competition during Week 1 of the 2017 season. Villanova knocked off No. 17 Lehigh, 38-35, Towson blanked Morgan State, 10-0, in the Battle for Greater Baltimore, and Delaware defeated rival Delaware State, 22-3. Richmond suffered the only loss, falling 48-34 to No. 3 Sam Houston State. CAA Football teams went 24-7 in non-conference games against FCS opponents last season, which was the best winning percentage by an FCS conference. There are four games between CAA Football squads and FBS opponents (six in Week 1). JMU rolled past East Carolina, 34-14, last Saturday as CAA Football recorded the 35th victory over a FBS foe in its history and its sixth in the past five years. There were several other narrow setbacks as Rhode Island went to 3OT at Central Michigan, Stony Brook was tied in the 4th quarter at No. 19 USF and UAlbany trailed by just seven in the 4th quarter at ODU. This week’s slate features Delaware at No. 18 Virginia Tech, Towson at Maryland, Villanova at Temple and New Hampshire at Georgia Southern. Offensive: RB Cardon Johnson , James Madison | Defense: LB Kyre Hawkins , James Madison | Special Teams: WR Andrew Trent , Stony Brook IVY LEAGUE -- The Ivy League begins play on Sept. 16. For the third time in Ivy League history and the first since 2008, the Ivy League football preseason media poll has resulted in a tie. Defending co-champion Princeton and 2015 co-champion Harvard each garnered 120 points to tie for first in the preseason poll, while two-time defending champion Penn was close behind in third-place with 110 points. MEAC -- The South Carolina State versus Charleston Southern football contest, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, has been canceled. Both institutions will work together to reschedule the game at a later date. The game was postponed due to the weather threat posed by Hurricane Irma and the State of Emergency issued by the state of South Carolina. Friday’s MEAC opener is the earliest MEAC conference start since Bethune-Cookman and SC State played on Sept. 8, 2012. Only two MEAC teams are playing FBS opponents this week as Savannah State opens at Appalachian State while Howard travels to Kent State. Outside of North Carolina Central , the remaining teams will play FCS opponents. The Howard-Kent State match-up marks the second consecutive year Kent State will face a MEAC team as they fell to North Carolina A&T State last year. Howard’s win over UNLV Saturday night marked the second straight year the conference has earned an FBS win. Last year’s North Carolina A&T State’s win over Kent State on Sept. 10, 2016 was the Aggies’ first FBS win in school history and the first MEAC FBS win since Bethune-Cookman defeated C-USA’s Florida International 14-12 in 2014. OFF – QB Caylin Newton, Howard / QB Lamar Raynard, NC A&T St. | DEF -- LB Brandon Griffin, Morgan St. | ST - Khris Gardin, NC A&T St. MISSOURI VALLEY -- South Dakota’s Brady Schutt earned STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week after pinning all four of his punts inside the 20-yard line against Drake Saturday in a 77-7 win. Southern Illinois was the lone MVFC team to not play this past week. SIU hosts Mississippi Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 9). Since 2002, the Salukis are 12-3 against their first non-FBS opponent of the season. MVFC schools set a league record with four wins against FBS schools last year. The Conference has had at least one FBS win in each of the last seven seasons. Indiana State (at Tennessee) and South Dakota (at Bowling Green) take on FBS teams this Saturday. Last week three MVFC schools (North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State) amassed 600+ yards of total offense. and four MVFC schools (Illinois State, North Dakota State, South Dakota, Western Illinois) held their opponents to zero (or minus) net rushing yards. Both sides feature dynamic receivers. SFU junior Kamron Lewis, the reigning NEC OPOTY, went for 153 yards vs. Lock Haven while Wagner junior D’Erren Wilson, a transfer from UCF, caught 10 passes for 136 yards in his Seahawks’ debut. WatchESPN / ESPN3 will carry the Saint Francis vs. Wagner bout beginning at 12:00 pm ET. Wagner was responsible for SFU’s lone conference loss in 2016. Notably, five of seven Northeast Conference teams kicked off the 2017 season with victories. The lone two setbacks came on the road against prime competition – ACC member Syracuse (Central Connecticut) and No. 4 South Dakota State (Duquesne). Sacred Heart limited PFL member Stetson to 2.5 yards per play during a 42-3 triumph in Week 1. Meanwhile, SHU quarterback Kevin Duke ran for 81 yards and three touchdowns in addition to completing 81.2 percent of his pass attempts. It was the team’s first win over a FBS opponent since 1984 (prior to joining the OVC). OVC teams have defeated at least one FBS team in five of the past six seasons (after going from 2004 to 2010 without a win over a FBS opponent). With its win Tennessee State jumped to No. 23/24 in the FCS polls, marking the second-straight season they have been ranked. In its first meeting with Indiana State since 2009, Eastern Illinois drove 69 yards in 11 plays as senior quarterback Mitch Kimble connected with Dennis Turner on a 15-yard touchdown pass with three seconds remaining to lift the Panthers to a 22-20 victory. Kimble, who battled injuries a season ago, finished the game 27-of-44 for 202 yards and a touchdown despite being sacked five times; 67 of his passes yards came on the final drive of the game.

Murray State junior kicker Gabriel Vicente was named OVC Co-Specialist of the Week after his performance against Kentucky Wesleyan. Vicente was a perfect 7-of-7 on extra point attempts and connected from 30 yards on his lone field goal attempt in Murray State’s 67-7 win.
