FACES of the FCS

u FCS schools have nine wins this season against FBS programs. The FCS had 10 wins against FBS teams last year, one more than 2015, and tied for the fourth-most in a single season in NCAA history. The FCS set a record in 2013 with 16 wins against FBS schools. u More than two full NFL rosters could be filled with current FCS players in the National Football League (130 heading into games this weekend). There are 36 inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who represent current FCS institutions, including recent inductee Kurt Warner (2017, Northern Iowa). u College GameDay will air on ESPN from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at James Madison. The Oct. 14 appearance will mark the eighth College GameDay to originate from a FCS location and the ninth overall at non-FBS sites. JMU will be the second non-FBS school to host multiple times (2015, 2017), joining North Dakota State (2013, 2014).

For the 8th time in its history, ESPN’s College GameDay will visit an FCS campus, as the cameras will be at James Madison for the second time on Saturday. JMU hosts No. 11 Villanova later in the day.

BIG SKY -- Three Big Sky teams sit atop the conference standings with undefeated league records. All three teams are in action this week – one on the road and two at home. Four league teams find themselves in the FCS Top 25 polls, as the halfway mark is here. The Big Sky holds the top spot in passing yards (Eastern Washington’s Gage Gubrud – 2,188 yds) and receiving yards (UC Davis’ Keelan Doss – 870 yds). The league continues to be a pass heavy conference, as the Big Sky has four teams in the top 10 in passing offense. OFF -Case Cookus, QB, Northern Arizona | DEF - Josh Clarke, S, Northern Arizona | SPECIAL TEAMS - Rashaan Miller, P, Southern Utah BIG SOUTH -- Big South action begins this Saturday with two league games -- Charleston Southern at Presbyterian and Kennesaw State at Liberty. Gardner-Webb and Monmouth open their respective league slates next week. Charleston Southern opens Big South play Saturday at Presbyterian, and carries a seven-game win streak in conference road games into Clinton. The streak is tied for the longest in league history that was first accomplished by Liberty from Nov. 18, 2006 to Nov. 14, 2009. Monmouth DB and Buck Buchanan Award candidate MIKE BASILE is the Big South’s all-time leader for career solo tackles with 244, as he broke the record of 243 this past Saturday with a Big South single-game record 17 solo hits at Holy Cross. Basile’s 375 career total stops are fourth-most in the Big South record book, and 25 away from becoming just the fourth Big South player with 400 career tackles. Presbyterian College freshman RB TORRANCE MARABLE is the first Big South freshman ever to score a touchdown in five consecutive games, as he has tallied a team-leading five in that span (three rushing, two receiving) since Sept. 9. Marable leads the Big South with 564 rushing yards and 94.0 rushing yards per game. He is looking to become the first Blue Hose player and just the second Big South frosh to lead the conference in rushing yards. OFF – Kenji Bahar, QB, Monmouth | DEF – Mike Basile, DB, Monmouth | ST – Presbyterian | FR – Torrance Marable, RB, Presbyterian CAA FOOTBALL -- For the second time in three years, ESPN’s College GameDay will be broadcast from the James Madison University Quad on Saturday morning. More than 12,000 fans attended the previous GameDay show at JMU on Oct. 24, 2015. It will be the eighth College GameDay to originate from a FCS location and the ninth overall at non-FBS sites. JMU will be the second non-FBS school to host multiple times, joining North Dakota State (2013 and 2014). Close games continued around CAA Football last Saturday as three of the four conference contests had margins of seven points or less in the fourth quarter. For the season, 13 of the 15 CAA Football games have featured scores within a touchdown or less in the final quarter.

Reigning FCS national champion James Madison extended its winning streak to 17 games with a 20-10 triumph at Delaware on Sept. 30, matching Richmond’s conference record of 17 consecutive victories that was set during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The Dukes’ 17-game streak is the longest active streak of any FBS or FCS team and is tied for the 13th-longest streak in FCS history. JMU has also won 12 straight CAA Football contests, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in league history. The record of 15 straight wins was set by UMass from 1965-67. CAA Football teams are a combined 23-6 at home this season, including 14-0 in non-conference play. Off: Kyle Lauletta, Sr., QB, Richmond | Def: Troy Reeder, Jr., LB, Delaware | ST: Frank Raggo, Jr., PK, Delaware | Rookie: Jaquan Amos, Fr., DB, Villanova IVY LEAGUE -- Dartmouth and Columbia are the lone remaining undefeated Ivy League teams, after the Big Green handed Yale its first loss and Columbia defeated Marist. For the second-straight week, Dartmouth scored the game-winning touchdown on a fourth-down play with under a minute remaining in regulation, this time a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jack Heneghan to Drew Hunnicutt with 34 seconds left. The League went 2-2 in non-conference play last week and is now 15-5 overall. A 2-2 mark or better over its final four out-of-conference games would give #IvyFootball its best non-League mark since 1994, when it went 19-3-1. The Ivy League’s .750 non-conference winning percentage leads the FCS and ranks fourth overall in Division I, trailing the SEC (.816), Pac 12 (.794) and Big Ten (.762). Four teams appear in the national rankings. The #IvyFootball slate continues this week with a pair of matchups. Brown hosts Princeton on the Ivy League Network (ILN), while former Penn head coach Al Bagnoli leads Columbia against the Quakers on Eleven Sports and ILN. In total, four games will be broadcast live this week on ILN, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app on Apple and Android devices. Off: QB Jack Heneghan., Dartmouth | Def: DL Cyrus Nolan, Cornell | ST: PK Oren Milstein, Columbia | Rookie: DB CJ Wall, Princeton MEAC -- The MEAC has two FBS wins this season as North Carolina A&T State defeated Charlotte (Conference USA) and Howard beat UNLV. The wins mark the second straight year the conference has earned an FBS win. Last year’s North Carolina A&T State’s win over Kent State on Sept. 10, 2016 was the Aggies’ first FBS win in school history and the first MEAC FBS win since Bethune-Cookman defeated C-USA’s Florida International 14-12 in 2014. Five conference games will take place in addition to a non-conference contest featuring Gardner-Webb at North Carolina Central. The annual Battle of the Bay featuring Hampton and Norfolk State highlights the conference lineup this weekend as both teams enter with undefeated MEAC records. The contest will be shown live on ESPN3 and broadcast later that night on ESPNU. North Carolina A&T State is the only MEAC team with an undefeated overall record while North Carolina Central and Hampton are the only other MEAC teams that have a winning record. While its early, the Aggies will possibly have to deal with the pressure of chasing history as only two teams in NCAT history have finished undefeated (1927, 1943). Off: QB Lamar Raynard, North Carolina A&T State | Def: LB Darius Leonard, South Carolina State O-Line: Brandon Parker, North Carolina A&T State | ST: PK Aedan Johnson, North Carolina Central | Rookie: QB Juwan Carter, Norfolk State MISSOURI VALLEY -- Youngstown State set a school record with a time of possession of 45:14 against South Dakota State (Sept. 30). It’s the best figure in Division I this year. SDSU, meanwhile, turned the tables this past weekend against Southern Illinois, controlling the clock for 41:30. North Dakota State has the second-best in the league this year (42:40 at Eastern Washington). Only 20 teams in league history have won five road games in a season and all of them participated in the FCS playoffs. Western Illinois won its fourth road game of the year last weekend at UNI. The league record for road wins in a season, including post-season play, is six -- accomplished by UNI in 2007 and Illinois State in 2012. Western’s next road game is Oct. 21 at North Dakota State. Youngstown State’s 11-game winning streak at home is tied for the third-best active streak in the NCAA. North Dakota State’s 11-game road winning streak is best among current streaks. NDSU was the last team to win at Stambaugh Stadium, a 27-24 victory in YSU’s 2015 home finale. The Penguins were 8-0 at the “Ice Castle” last year including an NCAA first round playoff win over Samford and a quarterfinal win over Wofford. NDSU has not lost on the road since the 2015 FCS Kickoff at Montana, 38-35. Offense -- QB Sean McGuire, Western Illinois | Defense -- DE Darin Greenfield, South Dakota | Special Teams -- PK Ryan Weese, South Dakota Newcomer -- TE Skyler Cavanaugh, South Dakota State | Offensive Lineman: OC Jacob Ohnesorge, South Dakota State NORTHEAST -- Robert Morris will host cross-town rival Duquesne in the annual NEC Steel City Showdown, which kicks off Saturday at 6:00 pm ET on ESPN3. The host Colonials are permitting a league-low 162.0 passing yards per game while Duquesne’s aerial attack leads the NEC in yards per pass attempt (8.3), completion percentage (68.9) and TD passes (15). Central Connecticut, which doubled up reigning Ivy League co-champion Penn in Week 6, has won three games in a row (all by double-digit margins) for the first time since 2010. The Blue Devils’ defense has totaled eight interceptions over the past three weeks while senior RB Cameron Nash has produced three consecutive 100-yard rushing performances. Saint Francis has allowed league lows when it comes to opponents’ passing touchdowns (2) and yards per pass attempt (5.5). In Week 7, SFU visits Bryant, which owns the NEC’s top-ranked passing attack (354.2 ypg) for a game that can be seen live (for free) at NECFrontRow.com OFF: Drew Jean-Guillaume (CCSU) & Nehari Crawford (DUQ) | DEF: Brett Zanotto, DUQ | ST: Mike Lamb, RMU | ROOKIE: Eric Silvester, WAG OHIO VALLEY -- Jacksonville State has now won 26 consecutive OVC games, tied for the league’s all-time record with Eastern Kentucky (1992-95). The Gamecocks will look to hold the record outright when they host EKU on Saturday. The 26-game streak is also tied for the second-longest in FCS history, behind only a 39-game Conference winning streak by Duquesne from 1999-06 in the MAAC.

Tennessee State safety Vincent Sellers tied the FCS record by returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the Tigers victory at Eastern Kentucky. Sellers returned a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter and less than three minutes later returned a pick 44 yards for a score. He is the 29th player in FCS history to accomplish the feat. Overall, TSU returned three interceptions for scores in the fourth quarter of the 45-21 victory. Eastern Illinois is 3-0 in OVC play for the first time since the 2015 season. The Panthers have won its three OVC contests by a combined seven points (and also have a two-point non-conference victory). Offense: Roc Thomas (RB), Jacksonville State | Defense: Vincent Sellers (S), Tennessee State | Co-Specialist: De’Marcus Flowers (RS), Jacksonville St. Co-Specialist: Gabriel Vicente (K), Murray State | Newcomer: Vincent Sellers (S), Tennessee State PATRIOT -- Fordham senior RB Chase Edmonds is up to 5,561 rushing yards, 60 yards away from breaking former Colgate’s Jordan Scott’s (2005-08) Patriot League rushing record of 5,621 yards. Edmonds also sits at 7,015 all-purpose yards and is 106 yards shy of Fordham star Javaris Dudley (2000-03) record of 7,121 all-purpose yards. Lehigh senior wide receiver Troy Pelletier is also in striking distance of several career League records. His 30 touchdown receptions is four behind Colgate’s Corey Hill (1995-98) and two behind Dudley. Pelletier’s 3,602 receiving yards is currently fourth in League history and 595 yards shy of Dudley. Lafayette’s John Garrett is 2-0 in Patriot League play in his first season at the helm of the Leopards’ program, after defeating Fordham, 14-10 at Fisher Stadium in Easton, Pa., on Saturday. Freshman QB Sean O’Malley connected with senior WR Rocco Palumbo twice in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback. In two League games the Leopards’ defense has held opponents to 8.5 points per game, while senior LB Brandon Bryant racked up 15 tackles in each of the last two weeks to earn consecutive defensive player of the week honors. Lehigh QB Brad Mayes ranks fourth in the nation in passing yards per game (348.5), total offense per game (341.5) and 10th in points responsible for per game (18.3). Holy Cross senior QB Peter is 11th in passing yards per game (304.2) and total offense per game (311.3) through six games. Off: QB Peter Pujals, Holy Cross | Def: LB Brandon Bryant, Lafayette | WR/KR Owen Rockett, Colgate | Rookie: QB Grant Breneman, Colgate ®

PFL -- San Diego, which has won 15 consecutive PFL contests, returns to action in Week 7 needing one win to break the PFL record for consecutive league wins – a record it currently holds. The Toreros won 15 consecutive PFL contests during the 200507 seasons, including an unbeaten 2006 PFL title campaign.

With three league unbeatens at the season’s halfway point, the wait for further clarity in the PFL championship race may not have to wait beyond October. Jacksonville will have the honor of facing the other two unbeaten squads in Weeks 8 and 9, hosting San Diego (Oct. 21) before traveling to Campbell (Oct. 28). However, San Diego and Campbell do not face each other in 2016, leaving the possibility the league’s tiebreaker may be called into action at season’s end if the Dolphins cannot take control themselves. Dayton junior kicker Sean Smith became the second PFL athlete to earn national weekly honors, Oct. 8, when he was named the STATS FCS Special Teams Player of the Week. His 43.0 yards per punt against Drake saw five of his seven tries downed inside the Drake 20-yard line and two booming for more than 50 yards. OFF – QB Rylan Wells, Jacksonville | DEF – S Tim Simon, Dayton | ST – PK Sean Smith, Dayton SOUTHERN -- The Citadel will play its 500th Southern Conference game in program history when it hosts league-leading Wofford on Saturday. VMI reached that milestone on Sept. 30. At 7-0, Wofford is one of just seven remaining undefeated FCS teams this season. Saturday’s contest between VMI and Samford featured the first collegiate battle between quarterback brothers Duncan and Devlin Hodges. Duncan, a redshirt freshman for the Keydets, went 16-for-31 for 121 yards and three interceptions, while Devlin, a redshirt junior for the Bulldogs, was 26-for-38 for 262 yards and a touchdown. OFF – FB Andre Stoddard, Wofford | DEF: LB Lee Bennett, Mercer | ST: P/K Luke Carter, Wofford SOUTHLAND -- #6/6 Central Arkansas (4-1, 3-0 SLC) remains the lone unbeaten and in sole possession of first place in the league after another convincing win, downing Houston Baptist on the road, 27-7, in week five. The Bears next host Stephen F. Austin (2-4, 2-2 SLC) on Saturday. Central Arkansas improved to No. 6 in the FCS Coaches Poll and remained in the same spot in the STATS Poll. Sam Houston State improved to No. 9 in the Coaches Poll and stayed at the same ranking according to the STATS top 25. McNeese is ranked No. 21 and 22, respectively, while Nicholls moved up to No. 23 in the Coaches Poll and is receiving votes in the STATS. Southeastern Louisiana’s offense impressed again, tossing a conference single game-high five touchdowns against UIW. Offensive Player of the Week Austin Mitchell caught three of them for 143 total receiving yards. Sam Houston State earned their seventh-straight victory over Stephen F. Austin in the 92nd Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston last Saturday, winning 27-16. The Bearkats now lead the all-time series 55-35-2. OFF: WR Austin Mitchell, Southeastern Louisiana | DEF: DB Juan Jackson, Central Arkansas | ST: WR/KR Juwan Petit-Frere, SE Louisiana SWAC -- QB Devante Kincade threw for 265 (14-of-23) and three first-half touchdowns as Grambling State picked up its fourth straight State Fair Classic with a 34-21 win over Prairie View A&M. Kincade was 9-of-13 in the first half for 226 yards and three touchdowns . His three touchdown passes aided the Tigers to a commanding 31-7 halftime lead Southern scored the first three touchdowns of the game to grab a 21-0 advantage about midway through the third quarter and traded scores for the remainder to pick up their first conference victory of the season at A.W. Mumford Stadium against Alabama A&M last week. Alcorn (2-0 East/4-2) and Grambling (2-0 West/5-1) are the lone unbeatens in SWAC play. Grambling is No. 20 in the STATS FCS top-25 poll and climbed to No. 19 in the coaches poll this week. O: QB Devante Kincade, Grambling | D: LB De’Andre Hogues, Grambling | ST: P/K Marc Orozco, Grambling | Newc: DL Anfernee Mullins, Grambling
