FACES of the FCS

u FCS schools have nine wins this season against FBS programs, including Western Illinois’ win at Coastal Carolina last weekend. The FCS had 10 wins against FBS teams last year, one more than 2015, and tied for the fourth-most in a single season in NCAA history. The FCS set a record in 2013 with 16 wins against FBS schools.

u The National Football Foundation announced the Campbell Award Semifinalists on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and 37 FCS players made the list.

This is the 10th year coaches around the country join together to raise funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Fans are encouraged to donate by texting “CURE” to 50555 or visiting CoachtoCureMD.org.

RB Terrance West has 33 carries for 128 yards and a team-best two rushing TDs for the Baltimore Ravens -- starting all three contests this season for them. West played his college ball at Towson.

BIG SKY -- The Big Sky is coming off an impressive week, where it had a running back and wide receiver tally over 200 yards each and a quarterback throw for over 540 yards. The league is in its second week of play with two teams ranked in the top 25 polls. The conference has stepped up its defensive approach as Sacramento State leads the FCS in interceptions (10) and is second overall when combined with the FBS. The Hornets are also the only Big Sky team to earn a national player of the week honor, which it has done twice – one on offense and one on defense. OFF -QB Gage Gubrud, EWU & QB Kevin Thomsen, Sacramento State | DEF: S Wes Sutton, NAU | ST: PK Collin Roott, Northern Colorado BIG SOUTH -- Gardner-Webb senior LB Kenyatta Dunbar posted his third consecutive game with at least 3.0 TFL this past Saturday at Wofford, and now leads the FCS with 10.0 tackles-for-loss (all solo), and ranks second with 2.5 TFL per game. Dunbar, who entered the season with just 1.5 career stops behind the line, is the first Big South player to record three-straight 3.O+ TFL games since Gardner-Webb All-American DL HAROLD WELLS in 2004. Wells posted 10.5 tackles-for-loss during his streak (4.5, 3.0, 3.0). Presbyterian College freshman RB TORRANCE MARABLE leads the Big South with 449 rushing yards and 112.2 rushing yards per game. He is looking to become the first Blue Hose player and just the second Big South frosh to lead the conference in rushing. He is on pace for 1,234 rushing yards, which would be the second-most by a Big South freshman in league history behind Stony Brook’s EDWIN GOWINS’ freshman record of 1,310 in 2018. After three career games, Kennesaw State R-freshman LB BRYSON ARMSTRONG has been the STATS National Freshman of the Week (Week 3) and a two-time Honorable Mention for the weekly award (Weeks 1 & 2). Armstrong leads the Big South with 3.0 sacks, 1.33 passes defended per game and two fumble recoveries, is tied for first with two interceptions, is third with 10.3 tackles per game and is tied for sixth with 3.0 TFL. Off: RB Eric Zokouri, Monmouth | Def: SS Thomas Adams, Gardner-Webb | ST: P/K Brett Norton, Presbyterian | FR: RB Torrance Marable, PC CAA FOOTBALL -- The first full Saturday of conference play in CAA Football produced plenty of exciting action. All five league games last week, and six of the seven CAA Football contests played this season, had margins of four points or less in the fourth quarter.

Reigning FCS national champion James Madison extended its winning streak to 16 games, which is the longest active of streak of any FBS or FCS team in the nation. With a victory at Delaware on Saturday, the Dukes would match Richmond’s conference record of 17 consecutive victories, which was set during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. CAA Football teams are a combined 18-2 at home this season, including 13-0 in non-conference play. Seven CAA teams are ranked in the top 30 in FCS in scoring defense and six are among the top 25 in total defense. James Madison is ranked #4 in FCS in both scoring (12.0 ppg) and total defense (231.8 ypg) and UAlbany is #8 in scoring (13.8 ppg) and total (246.3 ypg) defense. There are also four CAA teams in the top 10 in rushing defense, led by #4 Villanova (60.0 ypg) and #5 Delaware (62.0 ypg). Off: RB Malcolm Summers, Elon & QB Trevor Knight, UNH | Def: LB Eli Mencer, UAlbany | ST: PK Alex Lucansky, SBU | Rookie: WR Ezrah Archie, JMU IVY LEAGUE -- #IvyFootball went 4-0 in non-conference play last week to improve to 10-2 overall. It marks the League’s best non-conference start since 1970, when the Ivies went 12-0 in non-conference play over the first two weeks of the season. The Ivy League’s non-conference winning percentage of .833 leads Division I, just ahead of the SEC’s mark of .829. Penn senior wide receiver Justin Watson continues to climb the records book. Watson needs just 71 more receiving yards to become the sixth Ivy to surpass 3,000. Watson’s 219 receptions put him in a tie for seventh all-time with former Yale standout Deon Randall, now a scout for the Denver Broncos. Big Green senior Jeremiah Douchee received STATS FCS Special Teams Player of the Week to go along with his Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Five teams appear in the national rankings this week. Princeton and Yale are receiving votes in both the FCS Coaches and STATS FCS polls, while Dartmouth, Harvard and Penn are receiving votes in the STATS FCS ranking. Off: RB Karekin Brooks, Penn | Def: LB Nick Miller, Penn | ST: DE Jeremiah Douchee , Dartmouth | Rookie: RB Zane Dudek, Yale MEAC -- Six MEAC teams are in action this week. Following Thursday’s (Sept. 28/ESPNU) contest between Florida A&M and North Carolina Central, Bethune-Cookman battles Savannah State (Saturday) and South Carolina State takes on North Carolina A&T State (Saturday). Last week, N.C. A&T opened their conference season by crushing Morgan State 49-17 at Hughes Stadium. In the process, the Aggies improved to 4-0 in a season for the first time since 1993. Also during the game, redshirt freshman Mac McCain returned two interceptions for touchdowns, one for 100 yards and the other for 78. He had three INTs for the game, and now has five on the season. Off: RB Marquell Cartwright, North Carolina A&T State | Def: Franklin “Mac” McCain III, North Carolina A&T State O-Line: Brandon Parker, NC A&T State | ST: PK Aedan Johnson, North Carolina Central MISSOURI VALLEY -- All five league games this week feature at least one ranked team, and two of the matchups pit two top-25 teams against one another. It will mark the 152nd and 153rd time in league history that two ranked teams played one another. The meeting between No. 4 South Dakota State and No. 5 Youngstown State will be the 35th meeting between two top-10 MVFC schools, and the 11th involving two top-5 MVFC schools. Youngstown State’s 10-game winning streak at home is tied for the fourth-best active streak in the NCAA. North Dakota State’s 10-game road winning streak is best among current streaks. The MVFC is the top-rated FCS league in the Sagarin rankings, and sits ahead of the Sun Belt, C-USA and in front of the Mountain West (West Division) and MAC (East Division). In the school rankings, the league holds 7 of the top 8 spots (James Madison from the CAA is No. 2). Off: RB Lance Dunn, North Dakota State / QB Sean McGuire of Western Illinois | Def: LB Brett Taylor, Western Illinois ST: P/K Sean Slattery, Illinois State | NEW: LB Jabril Cox, North Dakota State | Lineman: OL Austin Olsen, Southern Illinois NORTHEAST -- Duquesne, which opened up with three consecutive road games prior to a Week 4 bye, opens its home schedule against West Virginia Wesleyan. Like the Dukes, Sacred Heart has also contested three non-conference road games in a row this season. Saint Francis, which spent the entire month of September at home in Loretto, kicks off a four-game road swing at Liberty. Wagner’s Week 5 battle with Lehigh will decide the 2017 season series between the NEC and Patriot League (currently tied 2-2). Bryant, which heads to New Hampshire after last week’s 45-40 home win over Fordham, has a top-3 national statistical leader on both sides of the ball. Bulldogs’ LB Tom Costigan is tied atop the FCS individual leader board with 5.5 sacks while QB Price Wilson, a Louisiana Tech transfer, has thrown for the third-highest yardage total (1,419) thus far. The 20th annual CT Clash will double as the #NECFB Game of the Week on ESPN3. Sacred Heart will welcome intra-state rival Central Connecticut to Fairfield on Saturday for a 5:00 pm ET kickoff. Offense: QB Price Wilson, Bryant | Defense: LB Tom Costigan, Bryant | ST: WR Ezekiel Ennis, Sacred Heart | Rookie: RB Isaac McCray, Bryant OHIO VALLEY -- Jacksonville State knocked off its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season when they topped No. 16 Liberty 31-10 last Saturday. The win was the 33rd-straight for the Gamecocks in the regular season against non-FBS opponents. In addition, fourth year head coach John Grass improved to 12-3 against nationally-ranked FCS opponents. The three-time defending OVC Champions begin Conference play this week. With a win over No. 20 Tennessee State last week (the team’s second-straight over a Top 25 opponent), UT Martin jumped to No. 18 in this week’s STATS Top 25 poll. It marks the highest ranking for the team since also being 18th during the 2008 season.

One week after ending a 29-game overall losing streak, Austin Peay started its own winning streak by topping Murray State 27-7. That ended a 21game OVC losing streak (dating back to 2014) and a 41-game road losing streak for the Governors (dating back to 2010). The Catamount defense allowed 620 yards of total offense on the day but got the crucial stop it had to have with the game on the line, keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone after they earned a first-and-goal at the Western Carolina 3-yard line with 20 seconds left.
