u Ivy League play will begin this weekend as all eight Conference teams open on Saturday. Princeton hosts defending PFL champ San Diego in a game that features pre-season favorites from the two leagues. Harvard, which shared the top spot with Princeton in the pre-season Ivy League poll, opens on the road, at Rhode Island. u CAA Football teams were a perfect 6-0 against FCS competition last Saturday and are now 9-1 for the season, which is the best non-conference FCS winning percentage of any conference. Notably, six of those 10 games have been on the road. The MVFC leads the FCS with seven ranked teams, and CAA Football leads the FCS with four teams in the Top 10 of the STATS poll. u The FCS had 10 wins against FBS teams last year, one more than 2015, and tied for the fourth-most in a single season in NCAA history. The FCS set a record in 2013 with 16 wins against FBS schools. South Dakota (at Bowling Green) and New Hampshire (at Georgia Southern) picked up the fifth and sixth FCS wins over FBS programs last week. There are 14 games featuring FCS-FBS matchups this weekend.
RB Tarik Cohen had 66 rush yards (on only five carries) and hauled in eight catches for 47 yards and a TD in the Chicago Bears’ opener. Cohen played collegiately at North Carolina A&T State.
BIG SKY -- The Big Sky will have its first Eleven Sports football game of 2017, when Portland State hosts UC Davis on Sept. 16. There will be two matchups this weekend, where Big Sky schools are playing each other in non-conference games. The second game will be Weber State at Sacramento State. Southern Utah will host Northern Iowa in a Big Sky-Missouri Valley Football Conference Challenge Series Game, while North Dakota travels to South Dakota. The MVFC currently holds the lead in the series, 4-1. The Big Sky has three quarterbacks ranked in the Top 10 in the FCS in passing yards and passing yards per game – holding the No. 5, 6 and 8 slots in both. The top pass defender in the FCS is currently Sacramento State’s Dre Terrell, after he collected three interceptions in the Hornets win last week. Eight out of the league’s 13 teams hold a .500 or better record after Week Two with Northern Colorado as the lone undefeated team at 1-0. Offense: QB Patrick Tyler, Southern Utah | Defense: DB Dre Terrell, Sacramento State | Sp. Teams: PK Manny Berz, Southern Utah BIG SOUTH -- Monmouth redshirt-freshman RB PETE GUERRIERO has set the Big South record for most rushing yards after two games with 328. He bested the previous mark of 321 set by Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS (2006). Guerriero has gained 139 and 189 yards, respectively, in his first two appearances to become the first Big South freshman with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since Presbyterian’s LANCE BYRD in 2009 -- and the first to do so to start a season since Stony Brook’s EDWIN GOWINS in 2008. Liberty sophomore QB STEPHEN CALVERT tied the Big South single-game record with five touchdown passes this past Saturday against Morehead State, which marked the ninth such occurrence in league history. Meanwhile, Calvert has set Big South records for most passing yards and passing TDs through the first two games of a season with 728 and eight, respectively. The previous bests were 631 passing yards by Presbyterian’s TIM WEBB in 2008, and six touchdown passes by Gardner-Webb’s NICK ROBERTS in 2004, Charleston Southern’s COLLIN DRAFTS in 2006 and Liberty’s MIKE BROWN in 2010. With last week’s move of the Presbyterian at The Citadel game to PC due to the threat of Hurricane Irma, the Blue Hose will now play SEVEN CONSECUTIVE home games in 2017 and eight overall -- the longest homestand in Big South history. PC will now host games each Saturday through, Oct. 28, and the span includes a bye on Oct. 21. The Big South’s previous longest homestand was four games, which occurred six times and most recently by Gardner-Webb in 2016. CAA FOOTBALL -- New Hampshire knocked off Georgia Southern, 22-12, last Saturday for its first win over an FBS opponent since 2009. It was the second victory against a FBS opponent for CAA Football this season as James Madison rolled past East Carolina, 34-14, on Sept. 2. It’s the second year in a row that CAA Football has recorded multiple wins versus FBS opponents and the league has seven FBS victories in the past five years and 36 in its history. Several CAA players lead FCS in a variety of statistical categories after Week 2 of the season. Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta tops the nation in passing (426.0 ypg) and total offense (432.0 ypg), Maine’s Josh Mack tops FCS in rushing (179.0 ypg), Richmond’s Dejon Brissett is #1 in receptions (10.5 rpg) and receiving yards (165.5 ypg) and JMU’s John Miller leads the nation in punt returns (27.7 avg). Two of the top three rushing performances in FCS this season have come from CAA Football. JMU’s Cardon Johnson ran for a career-high 265 yards against East Carolina on Sept. 2 and Maine’s Josh Mack followed with a career-best 255 yards versus Bryant on Sept. 9. The conference also has the top passing (546 yards by UR’s Kyle Lauletta) and receiving (204 yards by UR’s Cortrelle Simpson) performances in FCS in 2017. Off: RB Josh Mack, Maine | Def: DL Andrew Clyde, Richmond | DE Jae’Wuan Horton, UNH | ST: PK Owen Johnson, Elon | Rook: QB Davis Cheek, Elon IVY LEAGUE -- The 2017 Ivy League football season opens on Saturday, with all eight teams in action. Last year’s co-champions Penn and Princeton are among the four teams whose games will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network (ILN), now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app. The Quakers’ game against Ohio Dominican will be simulcast on The Comcast Network, while the Tigers’ matchup with San Diego will also be carried live on Eleven Sports. Princeton, which claimed its second title in the past four years last season, was picked to finish first in the preseason poll along with Harvard, which has six Ivy League titles over the past 10 years. MEAC -- Week three of MEAC football action kicks off this week with a total of 10 non-conference games. All teams will be in action with the exception of North Carolina Central as the Eagles will have a bye weekend. Three MEAC teams are playing FBS opponents this week as Morgan State travels to Rutgers, North Carolina A&T State heads to Charlotte while Bethune-Cookman plays Florida Atlantic. Howard’s win over UNLV on Sept. 2 marked the second straight year the conference has earned an FBS win. Last year’s North Carolina A&T State’s win over Kent State on Sept. 10, 2016 was the Aggies’ first FBS win in school history and the first MEAC FBS win since Bethune-Cookman defeated C-USA’s Florida International 14-12 in 2014. North Carolina A&T State has put forth an impressive resume to open the season as the Aggies have outscored their opponents 101-3. The Aggies have played both an FCS team and a Division II team with a FBS team on tap this weekend. It was YSU’s first shutout in exactly five years (Sept. 9, 2012). It also marked the second shutout in the MVFC this season. Illinois State blanked Butler, 45-0, in Week One. For the second time in league history, three MVFC teams are ranked in the Top 5 in a weekly top-25 poll (9-28-15 was the other). North Dakota State (2), South Dakota State (4) and Youngstown State (5) represent the league. Overall, seven MVFC teams are ranked, marking the 12th time that’s happened in league history. The MVFC has an FCS-best 11 victories against FCS foes this year (11-2 overall). The only other FCS conference with more than five wins against its FCS peers is CAA Football (9-1). The Big Sky is next (5-5). After back-to-back double-digit wins, the Pioneers visit CAA member Stony Brook in Week 3. Defending NEC champion Saint Francis defeated Wagner, 31-6, in the first conference game on the 2017 docket. Saint Francis, which is off to its first 2-0 season start since joining the FCS ranks in 1992, has yet to commit a turnover through the first two weeks. SFU quarterback Bear Fenimore leads the NEC with six touchdown passes through his first two starts. Meanwhile, All-American receiver Kamron Lewis pulled in a 30-yard scoring strike vs. Wagner, marking his sixth consecutive game with at least one touchdown catch. Duquesne’s visit to Dayton will complete the NEC’s season series with the Pioneer Football League. NEC teams are 3-0 vs. PFL members this month. Galloway currently ranks second nationally in rushing (172.5 yards/game), fifth in all-purpose yards (197.5 yards/game) and ninth in rushing yards/carry (8.41) after transferring from Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Austin Peay has started the season with back-to-back games against FBS opponents. In each game the Governors have allowed less than 300 yards of total offense, a first for its program against back-to-back FBS foe. The Govs, who are looking to snap a 29-game losing streak, currently ranks first in the OVC and 17th nationally in total defense (271.5 yards/game).
Tennessee State is the only undefeated team in the OVC following its 17-15 victory over Jackson State in the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis.
